This movie is the TAS of Metroid Legacy, which is one of the most famous hacks of Super Metroid. It was completed in June 2005, and had already been published at a certain Japanese website. Having a chance, I'm just submitting it into the worldwide community for the first time.

Metroid Legacy Introduction

"Metroid Legacy" is well-balanced, full-changed hack of Super Metroid.
Features of this hack are following.
  • Almost all of the landforms, placement of enemies, room connections, item order are changed.
  • It contains whole new world that is not associated with original world.
  • Upgraded game difficulty throughout all scenes, especially boss fights.
  • No change of game systems like movement of Samus and enemies, graphic-chips, 100 items.
  • No need of gilche knowledge to complete game.
The whole new world, which is entirely differ from original world, spreads out in this game. You can enjoy new exploration, searching routes, looking for required items, fighting enemies. Operation of Samus is same to original one, so you can play it smoothly. You will re-experience the first impression of Super Metroid.

Movie introduction

This smv movie was created with Snes9x-143-WIP1-win32 (WIP!!) and it
  • takes damage to save time
  • gets all items, 100%
  • aims for the fastest time
  • shows all secret routes in this game
  • runs through almost reverse order, unbelievable and stupid routes
  • contains several new tricks which may apply to original game.
Although speed run technique used in this movie may be old-fashioned, whole routing in 100% run of Legacy must be still fresh and full of originality. I believe you will have an enjoyable time for watching it, and for the sake of your best fun, I strongly recommend you to play Metroid Legacy with your own hand before watching my movie. Thank you!

New Tricks contained

  • Torizo quickest kill
    • It save time for 1-2 second(s) to beat Torizo by skipping one of his attack phases.
  • Sprore Spawn quickest kill
    • It kills him in second turn by using muscle way.
  • hopping ball / spring dash (I dont know how to name it...)
    • Samus keeps her speed through narrow pipe or other complex situation by using spring ball.

For those that are having trouble...is it possible that the places you find the roms don't have them headered? I read up on this slightly on another board. Take whatever copy you have, and try adding 200 hex bytes of 00 at the start before you patch.

This run desynced for me when entering the water area. Using Super Metroid (J) with patch applied. What switches should be turned on besides WIP? edit: Tried with "Super Metroid (JU).smc" now and it desyncs in the same spot as the (J) version did. Its the second room of the water area. Samus doesn't seem to make the jump and get's stuck instead.

A few clarifications... There are two versions of the rom, NTSC and PAL. NTSC is also the Japanese/US version. PAL is the European version. There are no other versions (excluding hacks) The patch is for headered roms. Make sure your rom is 3146240 bytes before patching or loading it. If it's 3145728 bytes, you have a headerless rom. You don't actually have to patch the rom though, if the filename of the ips matches the filename of the rom, the emulator will patch the game in ram when it loads. I prefer doing this, less work for me and easier to update the ips. snes9x1.43 broke for me in Ceres. snes9x1.43wip worked perfectly up to just before Draygon, when my power went out. >_< Highness: Make sure you have the most recent version of Legacy. I actually had the same problem; Samus jumps into one of the grappleable enemies. I downloaded the newest Legacy patch (from May, 2005) and the enemies were in different positions, allowind Samus to pass just in between them.

I liked the movie. It is definitely improveable(I don't like the lack of arm pumping). The route seems good to me. early Power bomb doesn't seeem to be slower(though I'm not sure if it would be faster aswell). Plasma beam and Spring ball saved quite some time,so I guess Lower Norfair before Sandy Maridia would be slower aswell.

As did I, it worked perfectly for me. I voted meh on this one. Personally, I think an any% run of this hack would be more enjoyable to watch, to me at least. the following 2 things I question: 1) When you fought Mother Brain, I'm not actually sure on if it did or not, but it almost looked like one of the hyper beam shots missed and hit the hand and not the head. Did that actually happen? 2) You could've ended input earlier, as the moment you pressed down on Samus' ship nothing you press can actually make a difference as to what happens. Overall, it was well played, but the item collecting was kind of dragged out a bit, which made it far less interesting (for me) to watch.

Worked for me. While the movie may lack some newer techniques and some situations may have been suboptimal (like the lack of edge jumping), others have been handled impressively well so I've voted yes, the movie definitely had enjoyable moves I haven't seen before. I think there was one place in Norfair where you passed by a yellow hatch, later on you went through it but had a short delay waiting for the powerbomb to open it (sorry, don't know the frame number). I think it would have been faster to drop the powerbomb on an earlier pass, unless that would have introduced lag or opened hatches don't turn blue unless you walk through them.

I see. well, jumping off ledges may be faster than running off. I agree. But, for that, I have a new question. How high that jump is confortable? I guess jumping as high as possible is more faster because of increacing fall speed after that. (like megaman2 movie) But this supposition would be wrong because horizontal speed while jumping is slower than LRdash. I don't know which is the best. How do you think?
And really, the boss battles weren't that slow, Kraid was good, Phantoon could've been killed with missiles instead for greater speed and Draygon could've been killed abusing X-ray. (Might be faster, I'm not sure though.) Other than that I see no way to vastly improve boss battles.
Yes, I watched my movie again and notice spending much time to beat bosses. If there is another chance, I can improve all battles.
No one has confirmed the fastest route for Super Metroid, and many people have different theories, even I make new changes every now and then to my Super Metroid 100% routes, Super Metroid has existed for 12 years, and it might take another 12 years to figure out the fastest route. I believe using a route which you feel comfortable with and that makes it possible to show off is the best one to use.
Yes. I agree you wholly. SM techniques is being discovered day by day and route also changing. 100%run is very difficult, but very challangable. by the way, If my remember right, you made (or be making) TAS of SM.

The reason is as said by Mr.Graveworm. Yes, in that time, techniques of MF is the newest one. So I emulated his movement, but I didnt know how to make LR dash(pomping her arms) nowadays, my movie seems little bit slow. Auctually.

Tentative yes. Although some of the movement is slightly sub-optimal; no jumping of ledges to start the falls with higher vertical velocity and, relatedly, often falling down shafts pressed to the wall instead of leaving some room to get a "head start" in order to pass the corners at a higher horizontal velocity. These are very small faults, though, and the run definitely feels polished and especially entertaining to me. The lack of arm pumping is merely positive to me, as I find it silly, but that's a personal opinion. I can't say anything about the route as such, having no prior experience with the hack, but from an entertainment standpoint it's not overly important.

Making a version 2 of this run would probably not be worth the effort if the route isn't drastically changed or more new tricks are discovered, most improvements would come from more accurate playing, more testing and better usage of the "mockball technique". Really, one of the best parts of this movie is the fact that the "Shoulder button pump" isn't used, if a version 2 was to be made, I hope it wont be used in that one either.
Certainly. too much use of mockball may become rather than slower. And if version 2 had come, the whole route wouldn't be changed dramatically. But I fell I want to repare my movie. :-) By the way, why do you think abusing "Shoulder button pump" is better?

If the movie doesnt start at space collony at all, that may be the ROM problem, not emulator one. sad to say, Im not familiar with ROM or how the files are made. fortunately, there are many detail advices. Please try. thanks.

I finally managed to watch the entire run. I'm voting yes even though the run seems very improvable. It's understandable that Catnap222 didn't want to start the movie all over when new tricks were discovered. But some other minor things that bugged me was that you missed shots at mother brain for example. Jumping doesn't always seem optimal either. Atleast not when jumping to fall down. Anyways. Good run all in all. Hope to see an improvement of it though. :)

By using X-Ray and Plasma beam. Plasma penetrates enemys so it remains after hitting Draigon. And there is a invincible time for enemy to prevent continuous damage. But if you swich XRAY on/off, invincible time disappears so enemy takes damage continuously. I think using this method is much faster beating Draigon. But it cant apply to orijinal game because of item get order.

I didnt changed my option of snes9x so please keep it in normal. And in my experience, desync problem might be a computer condition problem. If you restart your computer and keep it more confortable condition, my movie may work correctly. ^_^;

This...is the best thing I have seen today. And it's 100%, too! The only things I would possibly change are the random map-looks(unless that effects some random events or something). My Vote: Yes Why?: It's flawless. I can't see any real screw-ups, despite looking very hard. The aforementioned random map-looks(and I don't mean switching weaponry around) are the only thing I'd change. Plus...you found a use for the Death Beam glitch! That's total bonus points in my opinion! Anything Else?: Nothing I can think of.

That XRay glitch sounds a bit like the glitch in Megaman 1. Could it be used on more bosses or is only Draygon affected?

The plasma beam cannot pierce through Mother brain nor Ridley, so it's impossible to deal damage more than once with every shot on other bosses, even though killing Phantoon this way may be the fastest one.

Holding a for 1 or 2 frames using down at the last moment to just clear a ledge is the fastest way to do it.

What I meant was that sometimes you didn't use as much space as you had when running up speed for "mockballs".

yeah. I tried this technique to Phantoon and it goes. But Plasma beam doesn't penetrates Redly.... only him. Why? I dont figure out.. This is not my discovery. someone showed that short movie. There are many new techniques, and also I have several news which isnt known except my Japanese community. By the way, thank you all for any voting! Im supprised in so many comments and readings. This hack is...strange. I don't know if I would enjoy playing it or not. You made excellent use of spinesharking, short charging, and speed-mockballing. I also feel your pain of trying to stay ahead of the Super Missle count. I'll vote yes. A good addition to the hacks section.

That was awesome :) very nice to see which items I missed on my playthrough, although I think that everyone with at least some knowledge on Super Metroid would enjoy watching this. While some small improvements are mentioned, I can't say those small time losses detract from the TAS's fun-factor. Only slightly annoying thing was it being just a tad bit too long to go through in one sitting, although the Avi will take care of that ^.^
