This movie is the TAS of Metroid Legacy, which is one of the most famous hacks of Super Metroid. It was completed in June 2005, and had already been published at a certain Japanese website. Having a chance, I'm just submitting it into the worldwide community for the first time.

Metroid Legacy Introduction

"Metroid Legacy" is well-balanced, full-changed hack of Super Metroid.
Features of this hack are following.
  • Almost all of the landforms, placement of enemies, room connections, item order are changed.
  • It contains whole new world that is not associated with original world.
  • Upgraded game difficulty throughout all scenes, especially boss fights.
  • No change of game systems like movement of Samus and enemies, graphic-chips, 100 items.
  • No need of gilche knowledge to complete game.
The whole new world, which is entirely differ from original world, spreads out in this game. You can enjoy new exploration, searching routes, looking for required items, fighting enemies. Operation of Samus is same to original one, so you can play it smoothly. You will re-experience the first impression of Super Metroid.

Movie introduction

This smv movie was created with Snes9x-143-WIP1-win32 (WIP!!) and it
  • takes damage to save time
  • gets all items, 100%
  • aims for the fastest time
  • shows all secret routes in this game
  • runs through almost reverse order, unbelievable and stupid routes
  • contains several new tricks which may apply to original game.
Although speed run technique used in this movie may be old-fashioned, whole routing in 100% run of Legacy must be still fresh and full of originality. I believe you will have an enjoyable time for watching it, and for the sake of your best fun, I strongly recommend you to play Metroid Legacy with your own hand before watching my movie. Thank you!

New Tricks contained

  • Torizo quickest kill
    • It save time for 1-2 second(s) to beat Torizo by skipping one of his attack phases.
  • Sprore Spawn quickest kill
    • It kills him in second turn by using muscle way.
  • hopping ball / spring dash (I dont know how to name it...)
    • Samus keeps her speed through narrow pipe or other complex situation by using spring ball.

Information

  • Play Length : 1h 26min
  • Re-record count:26514
  • Clear Time : 49min
  • Colecting Item Rate : 100%
  • Emulator : Snes9x-143-WIP1-win32

Acknowledgment

I must say sorry for Bisqwit to submit it so late though I received his favor about 2 month ago. And also say "thank you" for the permission of Metroid Legacy. In addition, thanks to Terimakasih, Sippu and Kejardon for teaching me techniques and more informations. Lastly, very thank you BananaOyaji-san (Legacy author) for making this excellent hack.

I really loved this movie. A lot of the parts are really amazingly well done. Even without things like arm-pumping (which I think look quite bad anyway and doesn't even save much time) I definitely think this should be published! Oh I also don't think that you need to of played this hack at all to enjoy this. I've only played this hack briefly (only got up to bombs) and loved all of this run. My only complaint would be that I wish the guy who made it made the bosses harder!

I watched half of it, before snes9x inside wine crashed again. I'm in no mood to put up with wine again for now, but I'll watch it again later. As I played and finished Metroid Legacy, I enjoyed seeing the locations of the items I missed, and those really really weird routes you took. I have tried some of them on my own and failed (unassisted though), it's interesting to see what can be done with tool assistance, including all those shine-sparks you managed so squeeze in. I can't comment on the quality of this movie as a speedrun (judging by the posts it could probably be done faster), but it entertained me. As that's the question asked by the poll, I'm going to vote yes after I finished watching it.

Sooo nice to me. Just finished my own Metroid Legacy playing yesterday and this was something what I have waited (I made post about Metroid Hack, but forget that) There was few places where you can do things few frames faster, but when I watched this... that doesn't really matter. I just have to say yes to this, 'cause (almost) everything what contains word "metroid" or "super metroid" is MUST for me =) Now, I'm waiting faster run with different route (I have no clue which route is faster) and run which is as fast as possible (no 100%). P.S..... 'cause I watched this movie.... I think I'm going to be late from work 'cause I have to sleep some more ;) EDIT: I can't vote even if I'm user -level. :( So sad

Wow, that was utterly unpredictable, to mention a game (not really a game on its own, but it doesn't really matter, does it?) in some thread on Nesvideos, and then to receive a full and extremely well executed TAS on it. What can I say? Voting yes! This movie really entertained me. It really is one of the best (if not the best) complete SM-based movies around, I'm with Graveworm here. Considering the fact most of the items in Metroid Legacy are very well hidden, it was rather pleasant to watch these obscure locations unveiled (and the hack itself is a gift for various tool-assistance and sequence breaking). Not that it doesn't have some flaws, and may look somewhat unpolished for an established TAS community, those flaws are all minor and not really noticeable for an unexperienced player. Having a revised version would be good, but (at least considering the movie length, not to mention the difficulties of SM optimizing) it hardly costs the shot. As Saturn said, there will always be a first version. I say thanks to catnap222. Man, your movie is great! Do you plan to make another one (say, fastest possible any% or another version of 100%) using all the modern techniques?

Why don't you run a native linux version of Snes9x?

because I couldn't get nitsuja's version compiled, and the official release inside gentoo portage doesn't seem to have a GUI. If anyone got a working native linux version, PM me please, I don't want to clutter this thread with my linux problems ;) anyway, I watched it again, here's the promised yes vote.

I can send you the version I got from Dehacked if you want. Allthough it doesn't have a GUI.

I voted no. I dozed off mulitple times watching the run and I had to stop and take breaks several times in order to give as much attention to the run itself as possible. This isn't a criticism on the performance of the author so much as the fact that a 100% run is just not entertaining. The hack doesn't really introduce anything new to the game beyond a different map, nor is the map design inspired or new enough to make the different level design interesting for a TAS. 90 minutes is a long time to be sitting watching any individual speedrun, especially speedruns which do not significantly vary from existing runs (the regular Super Metroid runs on the site were actually more interesting because I was unfamiliar with the tricks associated and seeing them used in familiar places to do unfamiliar things made the runs interesting. Seeing them used again in unfamiliar places is not as novel).

Sabikage: Strange. I've seen the published SM runs but this run managed to show tricks I haven't seen in the SM movies.

the following 2 things I question: 1) When you fought Mother Brain, I'm not actually sure on if it did or not, but it almost looked like one of the hyper beam shots missed and hit the hand and not the head. Did that actually happen? 2) You could've ended input earlier, as the moment you pressed down on Samus' ship nothing you press can actually make a difference as to what happens. Overall, it was well played, but the item collecting was kind of dragged out a bit, which made it far less interesting (for me) to watch.
1)Actually did, honestly saying. Im shamed at this careless miss. 2)Yeah, I should have finished key input just after landing star ship. The facts you feel boring might be slowness and lack of my techniques. 100%run itself must be interesting even though there is much time to collect items....

Worked for me. While the movie may lack some newer techniques and some situations may have been suboptimal (like the lack of edge jumping), others have been handled impressively well so I've voted yes, the movie definitely had enjoyable moves I haven't seen before. I think there was one place in Norfair where you passed by a yellow hatch, later on you went through it but had a short delay waiting for the powerbomb to open it (sorry, don't know the frame number). I think it would have been faster to drop the powerbomb on an earlier pass, unless that would have introduced lag or opened hatches don't turn blue unless you walk through them.
Thank you for voting and offering some improvement!

It's understandable that Catnap222 didn't want to start the movie all over when new tricks were discovered.
Hummm, there is little bit different reasons for no use of newer techniques. It is hard for us Japanese people to collect information about recent discovered techniques because we have to read so many message boards in English! More over, it is hard to find the site gathering newest infomation, itself! Of corse I toured around these sites but I could't collect enough information to make perfect movie. Lack of LR dash is the good example. (even though that seems to make some people intresting)

This hack is...strange. I don't know if I would enjoy playing it or not. You made excellent use of spinesharking, short charging, and speed-mockballing. I also feel your pain of trying to stay ahead of the Super Missle count. I'll vote yes. A good addition to the hacks section.
Thanks and I know your SM movie which is unfinished. Good luck. :-D

Great run, I really enjoyed it! Great job, I liked the weird routes you took. Voting YES.

Hmm, could you rephrase that sentence? I'm not sure I understand what you mean there.

Yeah, that's what I thought it was, too. Still, I want to be sure. :D catnap222: any% run would probably be faster to make. On the other hand, it'll involve some serious route planning, which is already done for a 100% run. It's up to you to decide, though.

Oh, I seemed to ignore English grammer. :-P Im thinking of the next Legacy TAS run which include newest techniques. But I don't decide what kind of movie I will make. It may be any% run, and It also may be 100%run again. Well, the reason why I chose 100%run is that I thought it is more interesting and impressive than any% movie. But now I doubt this prejudice. any% must be impressive too. And that has the advantage of ease to make. I have desires both challenging new run and improving my old run.

I'm not quite sure why I can't view it. I'm using Super Metroid (JU) [!].smc, and when alone, I do get a checksum OK from SNES9X. Throw the IPS into the same directory, I get bad checksum and the game crashes right before going into Ceres Station. If the solution is indeed actually patching with WinIPS, please link to a site that doesn't have the ZIP password protected.

Is the CRC32 of the ROM D63ED5F8 and does it have a header?
