Golgo 13 is insanely powerful. He can fly a helicopter almost as fast as a plane. He has a vertical jump that is 3 times his height. His sniper accuracy is nothing short of legendary. If you shoot at him, he will kick the bullet away. If he kicks you, you will explode. He does all of this while wearing a suit and tie.
Paraphrase from the game instruction manual: This game begins when a CIA helicopter explodes and Duke Togo (AKA Golgo 13) undertakes to solve the situation as requested.
There are 13 acts in this game and the first 3 are a bit slow -- you are just roaming around Germany. The action picks up after that.
This and "Rampage" are the only NES games I'm aware of that use the B button instead of the A button to jump.
This is also the only NES game I'm aware of that the player has an "encounter" with a woman twice DURING the game. When Golgo 13 spends the night with a woman in a hotel, his health is fully restored.
If I remember correctly, this game was mentioned in the first issue of Nintendo Power Magazine.
This game features 4 modes of game play:
Horizontal manual scroll for walking and water levels
Autoscrolling for helicopter levels
360 degree pan/zoom mode for ambush attacks
3-D looking gameplay for mazes
During gameplay, killing enemies will restore life and ammunition. Your life is slowly drained automatically except when in mazes.
The reason for 'backtracking' in some of the pan/zoom fights is because certain enemies (usually divers and helicopters) do not appear until your crosshair is at a certain location.
There is no way to skip the cut-scenes. They add up to at least a couple of minutes.
Most of the horizontal walking areas in the movie are (I think) unimprovable. Golgo 13 has only one speed. There are many scenes in which I never stop. In some areas, I take damage if it's unavoidable. A couple walking scenes forced me to duck for a couple of frames to avoid damage -- taking damage in these areas would have killed me at a later point.
I jump over certain people in horizontal mode to prevent talking to them.
I die once in the movie during the Fangbacks maze. The weapon upgrade is in the second basement, and you don't lose it if you die. It is quicker than backtracking up to the top.
Act VII is my favorite part of this movie. I think it is the part of the game where most players would give up and call it quits.

Despite the low re-record count, this movie was pretty well-done. There were a few places that could be better optimized, I think. But you gave the game much more effort than I was ever willing to, so I'm glad you did this game. Yes vote from me.
Whoa. This is one very STRANGE game. It is the only game I know that combines and alternates four different genres. And it probably is the game with the coolest player character as well. He is so cool that he doesn't even run. Let everyone else run if they want, he clearly is above that!
Although your work is good and the game itself is wacky up to the point of being ridiculous, this isn't even a speedrun. This is a sleep-inducing speedwalk!
I don't even know how to vote, and probably refrain from voting on it at all, but what I'm confident about is that Golgo-13 isn't really suited for TASing — it is just too slow. Watching it for almost 50 minutes would be unbearable for everyone who's not in love with the game itself, there is not much you could do about it.

I'd have to agree with moozooh, it IS an interesting game with VARIETY, but that same variety is repeated ad nauseum. Over and over and over forever and ever. The movie was well done apart from a couple noticible but really minor improvements, but the game after all was boring to watch. I really did fast forward almost the whole time.
It's good work for a boring game, I'm thinking 'meh' at best.

I would tend to agree with you guys about parts of the game being a bit slow. (I even stated so in my description).
My main reason for doing this game was the fact that I felt this site needed a Golgo 13 run. It was actually one of the games listed in the suggested ideas page.
Also, there might be some things that could be better optimized, as kooz said. If that is the case, another author may be able to use this video and see some possible strategies and ideas for improvement.

My head hurts. Crappy game for TASing, and your run doesn't seem optimal.
There are some places where different crosshair movement would have been faster and you just pressed turbo A in most of the conversations.

Shouldn't we have a list of ONLY interesting games? That way people won't make a long movie, on a game that was suggested, only to have no votes (and not because of poor manipulation)... no one wants to waste their time like that. I know this suggestion was probably in one of the threads, but in that case make a page, like mentionned above (pretty sure there is already one, so put a link to it in the 1st post of every "Suggestions for X console TAS" threads.

That's the point, but
- it's hard to know if a game will be interesting before there has been an attempt at it
- anyone can add a game there without knowing if people will like it, and people are not inclined to remove other people's suggestions

Yes this game has variety: auto-scrollers, a slow-moving guy walking to the right, and every other aspect of a bad game. Sorry but this game isn't suited for a TAS. And to top it off, it is 50 minutes long!

I hate to vote no cause it looked like a lot of work went into this, but it's just not a good game for TASing. There should be a limit on runs like this (for slow side scrolling games) that if they're < 10 minutes, they can be considered ... but 50? If the game's not that interesting but you can finish it really fast, well, that makes it a bit more interesting i guess :P

Well, if you think this TAS is boring, you should try playing it normally. It is a very difficult game and takes forever (I had a lot of spare time growing up). 49 minutes is faster than a human would be able to do some of the individual levels. I like how fast the maze levels go in this, they are normally very difficult-but this is probably because you have to draw your own map.
It looks well optimized to me. Normally the side levels in this game consist of stopping and shooting everyone like a spy would normally do. But this run shows that Golgo 13 can slowly approaches each enemy and deliver a sound martial arts blow. The crosshair scenes might not all be optimal, but they are definitely close. You can't make all the enemies come at you at once.
This might not be the best game to TAS but I think it is interesting enough. The scenes with women are an excellent guide to dealing with the opposite sex. Duke always knows exactly what to say: "..."

Well, I'd definitely vote yes if it wasn't so freaking long. For this type of game, 5—10 minutes = yes, 15—20 minutes = maybe, 50 minutes = NO.
Arbitrary time brackets seem a bit ridiculous IMO. There isn't really a game like this per se that I've ever come across...so I just don't see the whole "more than 10 min OMG BURN" arguement as one that holds any water. If there is that much of an outrage at a gameplay vid taking up nearly an hour...well...just don't choose to watch it when/if it gets published.
This game is difficult and takes a LONG time to play through...we're talking RPG levels of time if you don't start the game knowing absolutely everything from a guide or something. Why wouldn't a superhuman playthrough of a game be at least interesting enough in and of itself to warrant not standing against it being posted? Same principle if some insane soul ever managed a runthrough of Shining in the Darkness or some of the Wizardry series.
I'd think variety trumps obsoleting the same series of titles into the ground again and again as far as it all goes.

You must be joking, eh? These are not arbitrary time brackets, I've just made them up as an example to show that watching Golgo for such a long time isn't even close to what can entertain me (dunno about the rest, some people seem to be entertained enough). First few minutes I honestly smiled, then it got ridiculously monotonous. I watched the rest at 1600% speed and saw all the same scrollers, shooting ranges and slow walking. See, there always is a limit at which such a monotonous gameplay becomes repetitive, it isn't arbitrary, but when the movie hits it, you know it.
The question is: why publish it if it is so boring, in the first place? Technically, it is good, but in the end it may come up with a very low rating and get discarded anyway.
Even if I like the game, it doesn't mean I should like the run. Especially if it doesn't show something utterly unpredictable. RPGs are indeed interesting to play, but if the run doesn't show anything special, my reasoning is the same. Also, RPGs usually have a plot and, all in all, they are different enough not to be compared to Golgo.
FYI: just "superhuman" playthrough doesn't justify a TAS. You may get it when someone finally makes a run of Duck Hunt.
:) Duck Hunt was endless though wasn't it? I like my Shining in the Darkness/Wizardry example better. I think I see what you are saying a bit better though. A TAS of the NES Rampage....there's boring right there!
I still think variety can't hurt though in the long run in terms of adding such a unique game like this though. Of course, how people wind up voting determines everything by the end of the matter. A time will come when all the "standard" games are exhausted for all intents and purposes...

anyway i'm really glad you did this game cuz i never got past the first maze, and always wondered what came after that. but i'm kinda hesitant to vote yes cuz what comes after is pretty much more of the same. so i'm voting meh, but with a thanks for showing me the wacky ending to this game!

TheAxeMan is correct -- the game is insanely difficult unassisted, and would easily take hours. Thanks everyone for your input and comments.
To restate what I said earlier, I made a run of this game due to its originality and unique style of gameplay. Yes, the movie is long, but there are obviously much longer movies on the site. I wouldn't like the idea of TASing a game just because of its popularity. This game isn't as well known as most, and I felt this site could be better off with a run of this game.
I also like the variety within the game. I didn't vote on it, but I'm not a fan of the recently published TMNT II video where the player teleports and attacks foot soldiers at least a thousand times (not really the authors fault for the small amount of possible attacks in that game). This game gives the player a chance to do many different styles of playing within the game, and they all have very different strategies and optimizing techniques. This is in lieu of just doing the same movements/attacks over and over again.

This game has an awesome story line. It's a shame that the game play is so repetitive though. They should seriously do a remake of this game for a newer console.

Any plans to do the Mafat Conspiracy? Also, I highly recommend the Golgo 13 movies available in R1 to those that enjoyed this run as well as those that were lost. Golgo 13: The Professional and Golgo 13: Queen Bee (Professional is better IMO and closer to the feel of the game)
