Introduction

This is an improvement of VIPer7's 96 exit Super Mario World run. It's 7724 frames, or 2 minutes, 8 seconds and 44 frames, faster. However, VIPer7 did not end his movie at the final hit on Bowser, the time difference at that point is 4340 frames (1 minute, 12 seconds and 20 frames). Techniques and strategies leading to this improvement are detailed below.
My biggest challenge when making this run was to come up with something I felt was worth watching. With all the recent SMW and SDW runs, ending up with a fresh looking and original final product has been very difficult. Trying to make each level as entertaining and fun as possible, to prevent the viewer from getting bored, has been my number one priority at all times. I do hope you will enjoy watching this movie, even if you've seen several Super Mario World or Super Demo World movies in the past.

Techniques used

Nearly every technique described on the Super Mario World Tricks Page has been used. The most important difference from VIPer7's run is the abuse of Mario's oscillating speed. When holding "forward", Mario's speed oscillates between several different values. If "forward" is released on the right frame while in mid-air, the oscillation will stop at Mario's fastest speed. This speed can then be kept up by continuously jumping on the first frame Mario touches the ground, which is commonly known as the "hopping glitch". This works both with flying and running, as well as Mario's medium running speed. This "hopping glitch" can be used to your advantage in many situations and you'll see me using this technique in one way or another in many levels.
There's one other thing I'll describe, since it's not on the tricks page yet; Yoshi flight. Flying with Yoshi is usually the exact same thing as spin flying, which is the same speed as regular running. With the Yoshi flight glitch, however, Mario and Yoshi move as fast as regular flying. This can be initiated in several different ways, two of which are used in this movie. The first is to dive onto Yoshi while Yoshi is standing on a shell (see Vanilla Dome 3 and Vanilla Dome 4), the second is to dismount Yoshi when flying pressed to a ceiling (see Valley of Bowser 3 and Valley of Bowser 4b). The second method is often considerably faster, and it's worth noting this technique was not known at the start of this run. Had it been, it could have been used to save time in Cheese Bridge Area, and possibly have been faster overall in Vanilla Dome 4, although this has not been tested.
If you're unsure about anything, I recommend checking the tricks page, and if that doesn't answer your question, ask me.

Other things

I want to thank JXQ for his constant support and feedback, always listening to me whine and helping me with hexediting, among many other things. Thanks man.
I also want to thank jimsfriend for help with level strategies and lots of ideas.
Lastly I want to thank all of you who have offered encouragement, helped me test ideas and shown interest in my run. I really appreciate it everybody.
If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask me, I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks for watching.

This is easily one of the best runs that I've seen on this site. You definitely put the "Fabian" in "Fabian Barrio Dumptruck PlaneSnake". Now if you excuse me, I need to go see a doctor about picking up my jaw from off the floor.

Great movie, I loved the flying under the levels and the item teasing on Donut Plains 2.

Thanks for that link Fabian. I have always seen ratings for movies on the movie page but have never known how to do it. I just went through and rated a bunch of movies. Everyone should give this movie a 10! And these ratings have nothing to do with the votes at the top of this page, right?

No these votes are only to decide if a run gets published. Once a movie is published, you can rate them, which is an independant thing.

That was a nice thing to come back home to. I prefer that you didn't get 99 lives because the things you do are more unexpected that way, otherwise you would just jump on every enemy.

Wow! We Fabians do rule :-). After having seen Donut Ghost House, I was like: WTF is happening here. I think it was way cool how you did fly below the bottom of some of the levels. It was also really awesome how you did that Vanilla Dome level, which had been really gnarly before. I liked how funky and effortless Mario did fly through the levels and it was absolutely outrageous that flying no longer was boring, but indeed very exciting. I also very much liked the groovy feeling that Mario had and how he juggled with the items. Last but not least, in Donut Plains 2 you ruled the tubular mondo ;-). This truely was not only entertainment but Art! When I remember back how it was necessary to try to get every live possible and how you skipped so many extra lives. Excellent! Looking forward to your next project :-). cu Fabian

Awesome job with the glitching -- I love the screenshot given to this movie. I'm not sure if would be possible, but I've always wanted to see an uBer-glitched run of this game, similar to the Bisqwit-Angerfist Megaman movie.

Is this movie getting put on the archive.org. Just anything but BitTorrents (pleeeease). I really do want to see it, smv files desync very quickly for me. I saw the last one and quite enjoyed but I could spot a few obvious improvements to it. Until then I cannot vote.

I would imagine this is the kind of movie getting uploaded to google videos, if nothing else. I don't know if that project is till alive though. You can also try downloading the latest Snes9x emulator, maybe that would fix any issues you have?

Umm, why? :) Actually, I think I need to see a doctor. There is no game with Mario as the main character that can, well, really entertain me. Oversimplified level design which doesn't leave much room for variation, repetitive music and annoying sounds, drawing style… fail to deliver it to me. I'm seriously ill. I don't like Mario games and I don't get everyone's obsession over them. *sob* However, I honestly admire you, Fabian. For most of the time (gosh, why does this game have SO MANY dull levels?), I was like :-|, but for some brief moments, I went :D, and I really did appreaciate your attempts at entertainment. Far more so than with the previous 96-exits run. Surprisingly enough, I enjoyed the autoscrolling levels the most, where you had all the time to express your creativity without regard to speed or whatnot. Despite the previous paragraph and the fact that I haven't been thoroughly impressed, I still think this is a solid movie and a great addition to the site. Thank you for your work. BTW, what do you think to do next? :)

Thanks a lot mozooh. I appreciate that very much, I'm glad you kinda liked it even though hating the general game, I think that's a great compliment. As for what I'll do next, most likely nothing. The SDW run I did with JXQ and this SMW run is probably all I'll ever do in TASing. I might always change my mind of course, but I don't know any other game(s) and I have no intention of doing anything SMW/SDW related either.

Whew, I'm glad you're not mad at me after that rant. It's sad that you don't plan on doing some other runs, I hope you'll change your mind some day. By the way, are there any spots for possible improvements in this run? And if there are some, by how much can it theoretically be improved?

Moozooh, there are several ideas for imporvment being discussed in the SMW topic. I'm not sure what the total time of these improvements would be (some may not be possible), but I would say it would be under a minute.

Under a minute for sure. I'd be surprised if you could get more than six seconds.
