Yeah, it's a doozy. Unfortunately, I don't actually have a recording of it. It's possible I might be able to recover one whenever I try to grab stuff from the dying hard drive I've got sitting in my dead PC over there, but don't hold your breath. I've been "planning on fixing" that computer for almost a year now :/ . Someone has a Gens fuzzy input thingamabob, it was whoever was working on Vectorman. Maybe you should talk to him about setting it up to mess around with that jump in Sonic.

OK done with "labyrinth" stage I managed a 1 frame improvement http://rapidshare.de/files/29008828/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_1_ALL_EMERALDS.gmv.html I gained one frame in three places but lost two on the jump to the penultimate button since Sonic kept hovering over for longer than he should and don't even mention the moving water platform jump, but still one frame gained is like one second gained.

I've done Labarinth 2 with a 9 frame improvement. Marks out of ten for guessing where most of them were gained. http://rapidshare.de/files/29410440/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_1_ALL_EMERALDS.gmv.html I did lose frames in several places, but this is due to the annoying slight randomness of the game i.e. when the game seems to make decisions on whether or not you'll make a certain jump based on the input beforehand rather than time of arrival. Its really annoying all this inconsistency in the game. Its also annoying when you're trying to land on platforms since sometimes it can delay anywhere between 1-6 frames, but it can also have favourable results as well. Enjoy none the less and now for the most feared game level in all of sonic wish me luck.

Well I can't exactly tell where the differences are just by watching, but your persistence is admirable. And I definitely wish you good luck on Labyrinth 3. What a fun night that was! Jumping ahead: I may have already mentioned this, but for Star Light 3, depending on how many frames you beat me by, it may be faster overall to wait and end at 45 seconds (due to a shorter bonus). I remember this because I had 45 at first, then went back and improved it enough to barely get 44, and I actually started the next level later. And go for 16 seconds on Star Light 2! :)

Just want to say I finally done that dreaded water section in act 3. I seriously was thinking about giving up since I thought I'd never be able to get past it without drowning, but yeah I escaped at the last possible frame and now I'm one frame up at the start of the boss.

Yay finally done but no improvement. However, I did gain and lose frames in certain areas -1 frame because of lag in tunnel = -1 +1 because I let go of pole earlier = 0 -1 because of lag when falling onto vertical climbing section = -1 +2 due to improved jump where two robots are = +1 -1 because I couldn't get the early bounce off Robotnik = 0 +1,+1 in various secions during Robotnik = +2 -1 near the end of Robotnik = +1 -1 since I could land on the switch any earlier = 0 So quite a roller coaster but it'll be very hard to notice all that in real time. Again all this annoying favourable/unfavourable randomness. Here it is http://rapidshare.de/files/30520883/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_1_ALL_EMERALDS.gmv.html Finally got through the fucking Labarinth stages no wonder everyone seems to give up on them (all though its not over yet), the bit I hated most about them is the vertical climbing sections with small right angled ledges pointing out since you have to go through at least 50+ jumping combinations. EDIT: BTW JXQ when you were refering to Star Light 1+2 I don't think its very likely that the timer will be lowered since you were... Act 1 was 15/16 frames from a 21 Act 2 was 28 frames from a 16 although there is definitley a few questionable things that you did. Although it takes a critical eye to see them, I couldn't be guaranteed that I have improvements and even if they were improvements there only gonna be 1/2 improvements which isn't enough to lower the ingame timer. There's more chance of lowering the timer in Labarinth 2, since its a long level and I was 15/16 frames from lowering the ingame timer, and even still I don't think it could be improved by more than 10 frames with most 1/2 frame improvemts over certain jumps and turns. Although it would probally go into the 1000's to get it lowered since you'd have to go into useless tapping of certain buttons to see if you can manipulatate certain landings and jumping on edges of platform as well as being able to clip through certain corners of ledges. Anyway Labarinth is done and done onto Star Light Tommorow.

I wasn't optimistic about getting 16 on SL2 but it would be neat, because I don't think there are any 16 second levels in a Sonic game yet. Some of the movements on Star Light certainly don't look too optimal, such as the jump at the beginning of Star Light 2, but I did test them pretty thoroughly. I still hope you find improvements though :)

Star Light one is done with a 3 frame improvement http://rapidshare.de/files/30611114/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_1_ALL_EMERALDS.gmv.html Here's how it breaks down +1 with an earlier jump to the first bouncer (no offence but how could that mistake be made) = +1 +2 with an earlier earlier jump to the first red bouncer (spent ages trying to manipulate this) = +3 -1 with an slightly higher jump of the spiral platforms (holding A for 2 frames instead of one) , this was a necesscary to avoid losing 7 frames later on because this way the animation was set for the jump to the second red bouncer = +2 -1 since I had to delay the jump on the downward section leading to the second red bouncer = +1 + 1 with an earlier jump to the second boucer (again hard to manipulate) = +2 +1 earlier roll and jump going past the first fan and accelerating for longer in the second fan = +3 I'm fairly confident that 21 seconds is impossible. I mean where could 11/12 frames be gained in such a short level. Unless Sonic could somehow get caught in the wall where the falling stairs are and then zip through it.

Well lookie lookie I think I managed to shave off 3 frames or was it more than that please someone clarify for me. http://rapidshare.de/files/30721493/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_1_ALL_EMERALDS.gmv.html EDIT: Opps I just realised an improvement of at least 10 frames.

I really need help with Star Light 3, there is a section roughly 26/27 seconds into the level where Sonic has to make an incredibly complex jump, but it never comes off, so I'd rather not have to go through all the pain of winding way back until I eventually get it, instead I need to know what application is needed to hex edit since there is no mention of it whatsoever in the GMV section, I've tried various applications but all I get is mumbo jumbo i.e. y's with two dots above them. I want to hex edit JXQ's run of that level and delay by 1/2 frames when jumping on the switch at the end.

You need a hex editor.

I don't remember that jump being more complex for me than many others throughout that zone. Act 2 was much more picky, especially during the sine-wave portion just before jumping over the giant wall. And who knows? You may improve it by trying it instead of copying :) Either way, I would think it would be faster to just record it yourself than finding a hex-editor, finding the frames, pasting, checking for a sync, possibly adjusting, etc... http://tasvideos.org/HexEditing.html This page has a link to some suggested hex-editors, I believe.

Tnx, although I still have no real idea of how to use it since I don't know how to view binary. So far I've worked out that I want to copy 13:58:23 >> 14:38:45 into 16:31:38 --------------- I take it one box equals one byte and three boxes equals one frame starting from the point where FF is displayed. EDIT: I'm not looking at improving the level, I just want to get a 45 exact, I've managed to get roughly 2/3 frames at head, but I've think I've went into the 1000's trying to get this jump, you may have got lucky on the approach and pulled it off in relativley few goes. I really just want to get the run finished since Scrap Brain 1+2 are the only real stages in the way. EDIT_2: Good job I payed attention when I was at school, I finally managed after about 8 painstaking attempts to hex edit JXQ's run in sync with mine in Star Light 3. I re-checked the whole movie to make sure it didn't desync anywhere. I had to delay jumping by two frames in order to get the 45, since if you trigger a end switch or signpost on the exact frame that timer increments then it stays where it is. It took me about an hour on pen and paper to figure roughly the locations of where I needed to copy and paste and it isn't something I'd reccomend anyone to do lightly. Star Light is finished now onto Scrap Brain 1 and to see what I can make of that glitch. http://rapidshare.de/files/31295569/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_1_ALL_EMERALDS.gmv.html BTW in reference to that Sine wave bit in Act 2, I managed to clear that easily since I spent a lot of re-records trying to gain the maximum possible speed, when I held the A button all the way I nearly cleared the second wall, but I simply had to let of it to avoid colliding into the far wall. Watching inputs in Frame advance would best tell the story to that and what happened at the end of the stage. Left+Right certainly has very weird properties in this game although very rarely any use.

Done with Scrap Brain 1 just the one frame this time. http://rapidshare.de/files/31486223/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_1_ALL_EMERALDS.gmv.html So so close to getting this done I may finally get it done by the end of next week. I don't think Act 3 is very hard so this is probally the only stage left, but it'll be difficult to be quick because of all the timed and automated sequences. EDIT: Oh no the game is freezing at the end of Star Light 1 is this happening to anyone else.

It's because you have some "00" in the hex code, which, unlike the other emulators, means every button is pressed, rather than none. So you've paused the game at that point. I'm guessing you were inserting frames. Instead, use "FF". I had a savestate that started at SL2 and it worked fine from there. Edit: I just tried hex-editing your file, by replacing the zero's between 290A7 and 290B7 with F's, and the movie synced all the way through Scrap Brain 1.

I just did that and watched it. I have no idea what the fuck happened in scrap brain one though. You went into a gas pipe and came out with the fire, didn't you ????
