Since top 10 lists are all the rage nowadays, I thought TASvideos should get some as well. My list would be (in no particular order): nitsuja, FinalFighter, Walker Boh, JXQ, Phil, Genisto, Bisqwit, spezzafer, AngerFist and adelikat. Honourable mentions: Sprint, BOMF, Saturn, slash_star_dash, Sami and Baxter. Probably Bisqwit or someone could make a finalized list, since this is just my opinions. Make a case for yourself (or someone else) in this thread!
My current project: Something mysterious (oooooh!) My username is all lower-case letters. Please get it right :(

Finalized list doesn't sound possible or "right" :P edit: this thread has just been terminated by FODA

Maybe better not make such ratings for people... There were similar cases when really creative people lost motivation on doing something (that time it was writing fanfiction ^^) because of getting 2nd or 11th place, as they understood it wrong ^^

Why on earth are we going to qualify eachother now? That can't lead to anything good.

Well, its too hard to know since I don't know every player or TAS they've done. Although some are in their for there quantity of good movies while others have maybe 1 or 2 excellent movies.

Well, I personally have lots of respect for Morimoto and FinalFighter, though their runs are gradually disappearing from the site. They ought to be in a hall of fame or something, since they were among the pioneers and glorifiers of TAS.

You must love Mario, Megaman and Sonic.

If we put our favorites together, we can build a super race of TASers, a pure race if you will, and then we can put all those who fall short of our glory into concentr--I mean fun camps where they can frolic and play with gumdrop smiles. Meanwhile, we will conquer the gaming world from console to console and our children will feast upon the flesh of our triumph! KIKIKIKIKIKI!!!!!!!

"fun camps"! LOL I tend to focus more on favorite movies rather than favorite authors. One person can theoretically do a run just as good as any other, if they are dedicated enough to it.

Yes, but that also applies to anything else a person could possibly do. :P

In the interests of science, I have produced this list
  1. Nitsuja 14
  2. Genisto 10
  3. JXQ 9
  4. Adelikat 8
  5. DonamerDragon 3
  6. Fabian 2 9.05
  7. Spezzafer 2 8.8 2
  8. Bisqwit 2 8.8 3
  9. Scumtron 2 8.55
  10. Superninja 1
Rest assured, that there was a process involved in this:
  1. On a list of all nonobsoleted movies, sorted by descending rating (http://tasvideos.org/Movies-RatingY.html), find the first 10 players (Fabian, Nitsuja, JXQ, Superninja, Genisto, Spezzafer, (Shinryuu & Bisqwit), DonamerDragon, Baxter, Parrot14green)
  2. Find the rating for the movie by the 10th player. (8.6)
  3. Add all other players who have a movie of this rating into the potentials list (Scumtron, Adelikat, Pom)
  4. Count the total number of movies each has rated above 7.5
  5. In the event of a tie, stratify tied players by average rating of the relevant movies
  6. If any players are still tied, stratify tied players by number of movies rated below 7.5 (lower is better)
  7. If any players are still tied (this didn't happen, but), stratify once more by average rating of all movies
  8. If any players are still tied, a tie is declared
Edit: I had accidentally counted the "Fabian & JXQ" run for Fabian's score, but not JXQ's

I couldn't come up with ten so here's the top 4 in order of awesomeness: 1. spezzafer 2. nitsuja 3. Genisto 4. JXQ Note: The list is of course based only on TASes the players have produced, not on the people themselves.

Upthorn -- Seems to be a fairly decent list, but only really serves as a top ten of the present and not of all time. In which case i would expect to see names such as Phil Cote and Walker Boh. In either case most names on your list would remain and the top three would be relatively unchanged.

I used this as my reasoning: "The best TASes of all time won't get obsoleted, so I don't need to factor obsoleted runs in." If we were counting obsoleted runs, though bisqwit would probably be much higher, superninja probably wouldn't be on it, and phil cote probably would.

Although i agree with "The best TASes of all time won't get obsoleted, so I don't need to factor obsoleted runs in." it wouldn't be 'bad' to add them in. Just because a run is obsoleted doesn't make that run bad or the author bad for that matter. For example, Morimoto's Gradius movie in its day was brilliant, however, as TASing has progressed it is now seen as sloppy and unoptimized. A better example; Sprintgod's Sonic 3 & Knuckles run could never be called a 'bad' movie and until two weeks ago it was one of the best movies on the site. Even though it has been improved by ten minutes this will always be a good run.

Don't forget that the tools have also been improved greatly. It's not really fair to compare a movie done with 20fps Famtasia and a movie done with the current FCEU using frame advance and memory watcher.

This is an excellent point. I remember saying at some point that Genisto submitted runs precise enough to have used a memory viewer, but didn't (I think I was referring to SMB3's lag reduction / elimination when saying this). Edit: Does NrgSpoon's link take anyone else to just the front page?

yes. Bisqwit explained it on IRC, something about some id in that url only being temporary or something.

Cool, that's much handier than just listing with text.

(Mostly at Upthorn) I don't think you can make a list of steps which will eventually lead to a top 10. An average rating of the TASes of a certain author doesn't say anything. If someone produces 1 TAS, with a very high score, it would make him a worse TASer if he produced a new TAS with 'just' a high score. I also don't think, even if you have a movie which is rated a 4, that this movie will make you worse at TASing... the TAS can be just fine, but might just not be suited for a TAS (thus maybe shouldn't have been accepted in the first place). Counting the amount of TASes doesn't say too much, with the same argument. If you count all movies of 7.5 and higher, a player with 1 movie rated 7.5 will end up better than a player who has 20 movies rated 7.4 Also, "good TASes don't get obsoleted"... well if someone found lots and lots of tricks and glitches, and makes a really good movie, and later, some other player makes some minor improvement, I still think the first player should be credited a bit. So basically, I don't think you can generate such a list, there are way too many things to take into account. You can think of a list by yourself, but it will always be a personal list, and the list is likely to change when time progresses. It can still be interesting to read who people consider to be good TASers though...

1) I'm honored to see my name popping up on peoples list :D 2) I worry that a topic like this could go down the gutter I won't try to order my favorite TASers but I would like to bring up Zoizite's name. His TASes have impressed me greatly and I haven't seen him mentioned yet.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

I like that idea, adelikat. This can turn into the "compliment your neighbor TASer" thread :) So I'll say that I admire Aqfaq for his tenacity in TASing - it seems he always finds more ways to shave time off his efforts. (Even if he doesn't pick the most entertaining games to me)

Upthorn's list doesn't reflect reality. Boooooooooo to him.
