Since the main Owata series has been TASed, I think this game could use a little love too: OWATA vs DONKEY KONG Link to video It also features a hard mode with slipperier physics, similar to playing as Luigi in SMB: The Lost Levels (hold Z/Space and Enter), if interested.

Another good effort, Tate. I'd say better than your last attempt (that shows your progression), but not quite perfect yet. (Then again, in my snooping around posts, I've read that TASVideos doesn't require perfect optimization; they just need enough to not make the run seem sloppy.) Again, you placed a Bilibili video in the YouTube encode section, meaning the encode doesn't work properly. (I'm gonna assume that's your main method of uploading videos of your runs. No use in trying to change your mind about that.) As far as the hack goes, I don't have much to say besides what feos pointed out.
  • Only one world ("zone") with three levels ("acts"): Green Hill Zone. And pretty much all of it is unchanged. (The boss's entrance is slightly faster.)
  • The only extra features added are the additional abilities you can perform, as stated in the submission notes. The comments and SSRG (Sonic Stuff Research Group) even speak for themselves.
  • Other than that, the entire hack is a demo and has remained so since 2021. No further progress has been made as far as I know.

I have to be honest, I feel like this is an emulator compatibility issue; as far as I know, the creator of the hack, ReZZ, never exactly bothered to test the hack on different emulators. I have to assume that they only used Gens. Now, I'll be honest: I found the run to be pretty boring, no easier way to say it; not to mention that, again, most of the hack is practically unchanged aside from Sonic and Dr. Robotnik. I tried again and again to find at least something that I enjoyed about the run, but I just couldn't. I guess the unbalanced power of the Air Boosts took away a chunk of the entertainment value since it could be abused to oblivion.

Fixed movie done! I was able to save 46 frames over my original run too. I'll hopefully rewrite the submission notes as well when I get a chance... Download here. I would also like to request a change in the rerecord count along with that. Original run's re-record count: 3987 New run's re-record count: 2354 2354 is definitely incorrect... should be 6341.

Perfect! I think what's next is have the hack accepted to RHDN and then re-sync the run on the new patch (unless it syncs as is). Unless you're not too busy, I can see what I can do later this week, if that's alright.

The game overall is playable, yes. But the issues were about it being impossible without using warps, specifically in World 3 and the Airship levels. Not to offend Acmlm in any way, but I feel like since he focused more on the faster runs (warped runs), he didn't pay attention to the rest of the worlds besides World 1 and World 8 at the time of making the hack (this was almost 15 years ago, so I wouldn't know). I'll go ahead and drop embeds of the videos I've linked in the submission, just to make them more accessible (at least I think that's a benefit): (World 3) Link to video (World 1-Airship) Link to video Also, it's nice to hear that the fix for this game is almost ready. I assume I'm gonna need to check if my run still syncs before it can be accepted...?

Hey! Hopefully, the judging process isn't taking too long. I feel like it's simply because the hack needs to be accepted to ROMHacking.net, like with the last two Superfast Mario Bros. games. Maybe just me being a bit impatient... Other than that, feel free to ask questions if you have any! Also thanks to DJ Incendration for their thoughts.

Well... decent first attempt, Tate. But knowing about the hack years ago, I've also known about there being faster runs than this. This is the fastest attempt that I could find: Link to video Also, you've placed a Bilibili video in the YouTube encode section; therefore, the encode doesn't work properly and cannot be viewable directly on TASVideos. As a former Sonic the Hedgehog TASer (sorry Sonic fans), I can tell you that this is a good attempt, but it definitely needs more work. Mostly on the optimization. I could go on with a few extra key takeaways that I feel is worth mentioning, but that would pose the risk of me mini-modding, so I should probably end with a tip for you: work on improving your TASing capabilities for a while; make use of the emulator tools at your disposal, then submit if you're sure that your future runs are the best they could be. Don't be afraid to ask in places such as the forum or the TASVideos Discord server; you may also want to submit your runs to the Userfiles like most starter TASers. (I still do for almost all of my TASes because they're mainly ROM hacks.) I'll let the judges take over the rest. For now, I'll be voting Meh on the entertainment, sorry!

Not sure if those syncing issues is really gonna impact FCEUX's reliability for TASing... I've TASed with FCEUX for a few years now, and I really couldn't be any happier. However, I've heard about FCEUX's emulation inaccuracy issues, and it's really concerning me... Although those issues would be for another post. Yes vote for now! Awesome work!

What I mean by "favorable objects" is that the enemies, blocks, etc. are not in the way very often (if not at all); a common method of manipulating such as far as I know is simply waiting before dying or moving. Try to experiment with the different patterns and see which is faster.

I thought I remembered it being possible to manipulate luck to have favorable object spawns... Do they not work here (or, if they do, is it slower to manipulate luck by waiting)? I'm voting Meh on entertainment because I feel like it could be better (maybe without deaths as well).

In case anyone's unaware, 400 points without continues is possible by despawning the flagpole in World 4-1. Demonstrated here (by poleovermania): Link to video

I too never would've imagined that such tools existed at that time. Maybe ROM hacking wasn't relatively known at the time until several years later.

While that part is true, remember that there is a hidden block on the side, so if you can make it through that and get inside the wall, you should be fine. Otherwise, if you happen to hit it from under (like any ? block or brick block), yes, you would have to glitch through it; you would have to use the Jump into a wall just below a solid ceiling and walk through it application, which would be much easier to perform if you were Big Mario. It would've been a lot less impossible if there were no hidden blocks in that wall, that's for sure.

Here is a TAS that completes the game with only 650 points. (Sorry for no audio!) This is the lowest score you can achieve without using continues, performing a game end glitch/ACE, or having a second player! I saved 10 points using a trick I discovered in World 8-Fortress. I discovered that you can hit a hidden block if you go further to the right and duck-jump clip it. However, if I waited long enough, I would've been awarded the 100 points, so I entered the other trapped door as soon as possible to avoid collecting them. Read my summary here (Don't question why I chose Zoho Writer, please...) or download my run here. 10/11 EDIT: Now that it's possible to beat SMB3 with 50 points via 2 Player Game, I'll be restricting that method as well just to keep things fair (and traditional).

Yeah, I'll have to agree with "doesn't" being correct.
Knuckles' Chaotix is one of the few Sonic games that doesn't feature Sonic himself.
Maybe this would be an easier way to know that this is correct: take out every word in that sentence except "one" and "that doesn't." Original:
one that doesn't
htwh's suggestion:
one that don't
If we were to use either phrase in normal cases, we can't say "There's one thing that don't seem to be new," but we can say, "There's one thing that doesn't seem to be new." Hopefully this doesn't count as an intrusion... I thought I'd like to barge in and make this quick correction.

Pretty unexpected improvement, yes vote! Some information on the spawned vine tiles would be nice, though; I noticed that you were able to catch a couple of those and warp to the right side (on World 8-1 and World 8-2). Knowing the first Superfast Mario Bros. as being the most unstable of the series, it seems fascinating now to find this glitch exists. Also, something minor: traditionally, SMB1 TASes end when Mario touches the last axe. Any reason why this TAS doesn't? Not necessarily against it or anything.

I felt like posting this run of HL Coins Land, a SMB1 ROM hack by HappyLee, which also obsoletes his own run of it in 2011. Download the run here! Special thanks to BlackWinnerYoshi for encoding my run, view the encode here: Link to video I first TASed on a bad ROM which started at World 0; players can bypass it by either pressing Start at the earliest possible frame or by pressing Start while holding the A button. I re-did the TAS on a fixed ROM that eliminates that problem, but along the way, I was able to optimize World 3-4 which, in return, gave me a faster Bullet Bill spawn for World 4-2. I also managed to save a framerule on World 2-1 but lost it due to worse Cheep Cheep spawning on World 2-2; I also did better entertainment on World 3-3. 6/30 edit: Removing details on it being a WIP, as I have finished the TAS a couple of days ago. Also included additional up-to-date information. You can still view my video of the original run that completes up to World 4-1 here.

I think when HappyLee brought up the true ending, he was referring to the fact that The Mystery of Luigi and Extra Mario Bros have two endings.
True, but as far as I know, there is only one ending, and that is achieved when you complete the last level of the hack, World 8-4. I doubt there is a unique second quest (thus, no second ending) after initially completing the game. I say "unique second quest" because, in the original Super Mario Bros., this "new quest" is merely faster enemies, World 5-3+ difficulty increases, and Buzzy Beetles replacing Goombas (in case anyone isn't aware yet). While I've been reading through the discussion, there have actually been two other questions on my mind.
  • What was the creator's (frantik) thought process when he included the World Select from Power On? I understand that the submission's description states that the creator has allowed this feature, but I feel that it is not quite clear why specifically he allowed it.
  • Will we ever have an emulator that can TAS games like Super Mario Bros. Special sometime soon?
Regardless, I still agree with the fact that the World Select is a known "password skip" (whatever you want to call it), despite HappyLee's attempts to defend the fact that it isn't and is still technically allowed. Personally, I feel like he should've known better; maybe if he could find improvements (if any) in specific points from the "all levels" run, he would've had a better run to submit. Even if his run was the first to be submitted, it still would've likely been rejected or, if published, would be obsoleted later by said run. Hopefully, though, there are still plenty of other ROM hacks that he could try in the meantime.

I liked the movie and felt it was more entertaining than the existing run of the hack, so I voted yes, even though I did not necessarily like the world-selecting part (which, in my opinion, made it trivial). Only one question comes to mind for me: does the original Super Mario Bros. Special allow for selecting worlds from the Power On state?

Forgive me for asking, but since the Cheat Saber is an (obviously) overpowered weapon, wouldn't that make for a trivial run? I feel it would be more entertaining to submit a run without the use of it. There is a run from almost five years ago that avoids that weapon and uses Rider Kick as a substitute (see below). Since it's not an insta-kill weapon, this is considerably less OP, but I fear that on the non-boss portions, the current "No Cheat Saber" run is not as optimal as this run. Link to video
