Because I [sarcasm]loooooooooooooooooooooove[/sarcasm] mindfucking everyone, I got as far as 33% done with Moon 5 (so very close to the end of the run!), then.... restarted all the way back at Moon 1 because I want to fix a few mistakes. I was, by the end of Pirate's WIP, about 18 seconds faster.

Clever idea, dropping into second place for a few seconds for the 2 stars.
This is the reason my testing was unsuccessful. I only tried dropping in 2nd place to get 1 star, and at a future point of reference, 1 star made me behind using shrooms only. 2 stars would surpass that. Edit: I did some comparisons. the 2 star strat, if much more optimized, should be able to beat mine; currently, it's slower. My 1st lap time: 22.43" 2 star 1st lap time: 23.06" My time when hitting item boxes in 2nd lap: 25.16" 2 star time when hitting item boxes in 2nd lap: 25.36" I'm fairly confident that you'll get a faster time using 2 stars, assuming you cut corners more, and slide constantly (and use that analog stick wobbling trick).

If this is what it takes to get a 120 star run rolling, this site is fucked.

Zurreco's correct. In GigaFrost's cancelled run, he takes damage immediately and gets the sabre right there. If you're going to seriously consider running this game, I believe in the submission thread are listed areas of improvement to Giga's run; most of the improvements involve boss battles.

Weatherton, everything was absolutely beautiful except for one thing; please don't do those "move in circles and finish the stage a.s.a.p" thingy. In my opinion, I think they remove a lot of the entertainment factor. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate them, in fact, it would be nice if we saw some laps doing those circle thingies. But a bit more variety in those stages wouldn't hurt :P Like for instance, do 1-2 of those circle thingies in Wario Stadium, and the remaining laps could contain a lot different stuff. That stage in particular should offer great amount of variety/tricks/different shortcuts you could display for us viewers.
The first full cup TAS that gets completed SHOULD aim for fastest in-game time for every single track, no questions asked. Saying some of the lap skips should be included is about as wrong as you can get. It's either include all of them or none. Your idea of no skipping should go to a completely different run; possibly one that completes all 16 NSC TT's, where because of lack of other items and CPUs, there's less skips to be had, and no lap skipping IS a legit category in the MK community (for TT).

Oh, and one more thing... I discovered something incredibly annoying when I finished the first cycle... If reset-recording was available at the moment, I could probably save over a whole minute by resetting after playing the Song of Time at the end of the first cycle. This would allow me to skip the "flashback" scene and the small cutscene in SCT. But oh well, I'm not halting the run to wait for that. Enjoy!
Antids does have a soft reset.
Really? Are you absolutely sure? Does the record reset feature cause Linux to crash? Edit: Jabo's was a great choice. I think it uses less CPU power; 1000% speed fast forwards through smoother and faster than the other plugins. Edit: Holy shit that was awesome.

I'd like to point out that the awesomeness extends to 4 other people, not just me: -Weatherton (creation/testing of many routes, CPU jumps, glitches) -Fried (taught me to be extreme in optimization. He and Weatherton TASed some sections of the LR TAS.) -Xenos (coming up with newer routes and tricks) -Adelikat (came up with memory addresses, and also was able to beat my first LR attempt, if only a small portion of it.)

It won't be SMK until we can find some way to extend those mushroom boosts. SMK and super circuit have it, but why not MK64? :-( Nice strat. I think the 3rd lap can be improved if you curve out more and hit at an angle more in so that rather than land, spin, then turbo start to cross the finish line, you just land on the other side of the finish line. How do you aim those red shells? Optimizing the shooting of those is going to be a major pain I can tell. This type of strat would only work for LR and MR as you showed, and maybe only KTB as well. Perhaps the use of red shells can allow for routes like rainbow road's.

Instant: SMB3 + SM64 0 star should stay. ExciteBike I personally think is overrated.... while it abuses bouncing, it uses the same moves over and over. It abuses the game for sure, but in terms of speed, I still think Biker Mice from Mars beats it by a long shot. Gradius I kinda like, but I think that a run where you must push it to the limits in order to make art isn't as good as a game that naturally is artistic and varied. Super Mario: any% should get it. the small is too "concept demo-ish" to get the star, the 120 star is too long, and the 96 exit is outdated aka being improved (and massively). However, I think the 96 exit improvement should steal the any%'s star when it finally gets done. Sonic: Sonic advance 2 and sonic 3 should have the star. They are the 2 faster and more impressive runs. Metroid: I'm going to have go with the 100% zero mission because the pace is better and IMO has more intense action sequences, as well as frighteningly fast boss fights; I suppose 100% SM would be ok if that doesn't make the cut though. I don't think NES metroid belongs, as the 2 other metroid runs are far more impressive/varied. Megaman: I'm going to go with megaman 1 for now. it's the shortest of the runs, has the easiest to perform zippiness, and is not being improved. It also represents TASvideos out of the 3 of them in my mind. However, I think once MM2 gets improved it may take it; MM5 I think is alright, but less deserving of the star than the other 2. Zelda: LoZ should have it for now, and should be replaced by ALttP when that improvement gets completed. I think the current ALttP should lose it's star. And while I would encourage for more GB stars, I don't find any GB zelda TASes to be as interesting as the zelda TASes for other systems. Castlevania: HoD. No questions asked. Wire TAS: Spiderman 3. The game got annihilated, and it also contains many speedy elements that aren't based on the wire stuff, something which I feel the other games lack (because they rely on the wire physics to be fast.) Special: eh. quad run? Out of those listed, the MMX dual run is the most interesting IMO, but it's so outdated, and even obsoleted by number of games completed! NES Games: Ninja gaiden 2 Battle of olympus journey to silius snes games: you picked 6 good choices :-( how to choose? maybe not Yoshi Island yet... there's a beyond impressive any% improvement in the works ;-) 100 CDs was awesome. DKC NEEDS to be represented.... maybe this run should get it, but I'm thinking in the future a DKC 2 run should replace it. Biker Mice should replace excitebike IMO. The mask was fast but not too impressive of a game. Genesis: Gunstar 2 player, no questions asked. N64: Hmmm. 3 out of the 4 of those are being improved, and to be honest I think there's too many emulation errors for my Mischief Makers run to get a star. I'd probably have to settle for goldeneye for now, despite it's graphical/sound issues. If all 4 of those games had their improvements made and all emulation fixed, I'd be looking at 4 immensely difficult decisions.

I really disagree with this.
No no, I meant runs that are currently being improved shouldn't be on the list. Also, Goldeneye 007 should be on the list.... except for the fact that it has a fair share of emulation errors. Not only is the sky wrong, and other graphic problems, but the published AVI is missing music track sections for every stage. If the improvement gets made, with glide 64 napalm, and it's emulated perfectly... it should get on the list pronto.

You're right, jumping the shark is silly. Saturn, stop shooting yourself in the foot. Seriously. If someone calls you out on being an asshole, doing an asshole move like changing their quote is not going to make you look better.

I thought you did a really good job on this. Your precision showed that you understood TASing concepts well; I saw abuse of being invincible after getting damaged, nice shortcuts, entertaining boss fights (only thing that looks like it could be faster was the queen termite fight.... it might be possible to start swinging sooner to trip her on the first possible frame, not launch the tongue to grab as soon as she stands up). I think the game is not the best, but you TASed it very well. Fast boss fights, some interesting platforming, good tongue action. I give 7.4/8.2.

I am interested in participating/running this aspect of the site, since I lack the computer/programming related skills needed for the other tasks, but have the skills for this one (I'm a communication major.)

Idea: In the submission forum polls, add a secondary "Should this movie be starred? Yes/No/Meh" poll to every new submission. This way people can easily express their opinion if they think a new movie should get a star.
I can only think of ONE case where this worked. In almost all other cases, people would post "vote yes and it should get a star!!!" and the movie would get published without it. In reality, saying "this should get a star" more often than not simply ended up as being "this person liked this movie a lot" because it was so commonplace and, in the end, Bisqwit's decision. Edit: moozooh's on the right track. I vote for #2. heck, what if there was a vote for who could be on the committee? for instance if I couldn't get in, I'd want people I know who can represent me.

Hm. I'm glad the stars are back, but having the total jurisdiction not fully in Biswit's hands smells like trouble to me IMO. Not saying that's a bad thing, but the cautionary side of me is detecting future squabbles. Since SM64 was mentioned, I think the 120 star should be taken off, considering the 0 star is rated higher, has much higher rpecision, and the 120 star is currently being improved, and by a significant amount too. Additionally, Majora's mask falls under the same 120 star boat in that substantial improvements are being made. Small only I feel like ISM's upcoming 96 star run will blow out of the water. megaman 5 and 2, again, are being improved.... yoshi's island is being improved, slowly (and not surely), but with what's known, 2+ minutes, maybe more can be improved... and a 100% (if it was finished) would be more star worthy... SMB I agree shouldn't be there.... The LoZ 2nd quest is more optimized than the first.... Umihara kawase may be short and impressive, but I think some other bungee type movies are better (like say spiderman 3 GBA). also the game is so unknown, and different that it feels weird having a star. ALttP is being given major improvements, as Tompa is showing. So I guess my major beef at the moment is that many of the runs on the list are currently (or being planned on) getting improved. The star list should be the pinnacle of entertainment and optimization. I also think many runs that are incredibly good have not been considered, such as: -Any of the DKC series: these games are immensely popular, really glitchy and cool -Gunstar Heroes 2 player -Rockman and Forte: zipping galore,e specially the 100 CDs version -Castlevania: HoD (IMO the fastest of any castlevania game besides maybe SotN, it makes the current starred castlevania look like a snail) The list does feel old..... I've been here since 2006 and have seen many of those same games remain there forever. I think new runs have been made, and will be made that should replace them.

"I say, good submission 'ole chap!" Will watch later today. I expect good stuff from the Mukkinator. Edit: no desynch on my end. I missed the boing boing of Gex jumping so this was a good watch. This movie was VERY different from the first, I'm glad you finished it. You even managed to find more sequence breaks with the still-bad-controls! impressive! Yes vote from me.

It's really simple: Any run that doesn't use out of room travelling to skip major parts of the game like bosses etc. is considered legit. I didn't define anything there, it's known in the SM community.
What about the crystal flash to get lodged in the door so that you can remain standing high up in the stage and shoot sooner at Ridley? isn't that technically OoB?

I defintely wasn't lazy with this run. Just look how much planning and luck manipulation work has been done in every part of the run. There are only 3 notable tricks I left out of this run (new OTES climb, Gravity Spike Tech and the mentioned Norfair Walljump) which together would save around 2 seconds only, and would barely make a difference in the end overall. In fact, I think that the old techs look even cooler anyway, so it only adds up to the entertainment value of the run. As for the reason, hero summed it up pretty well.
"All in all, the quality of the run is very high, and it's only improvable by at most 15 seconds in the early parts of the run (the late ones are pretty much flawless with a few tiny exceptions worth of single frames only). Ammo and energy management is excellent over the entire run, and in fact, the refill drops are so good in this one that I doubt they could be reproduced without sacrificing realtime by entering the menu to manipulate them, which would in any case result in possible slowdowns to compensate that." Make up your mind, either the run is of high quality and improvable by only 2 seconds from 3 tricks, or it's improvable by 15 seconds like you say in your submission text.

Not having access to internet periodically (or over long periods, like say a WEEK or a MONTH) is a common factor among people with real lives so I'm told. -Didn't check because they didn't know due to not noticing or bad promotion? Even if they are, who's to say that they are automatically tuned in to EVERY POLITICAL DEBATE on the site?
