Only 4 out of 13 matches use the clock-stopping glitch. In my opinion, this isn't enough to warrant a seperate category. In fact, I think it would be the best to have this movie obsolete the other movie and call the category "fastest times by all means".

it was really cool but I think it was taken down because an user complained saying it was giving away all the strategies to make the highscores, while he felt players should figure them out themselves
That's kind of stupid...

I prefer the old movie because you're falling right through the street.

Isn't this the same sort of idea as SDA? Basically, you have one page for each game, which covers all categories and includes submission comments and encodes ect. Coupled with a list of games, this would make searching for movies easier and might avaoid problems such as this one.
It is kind of like SDA. But I thought of a list of links that take you to the individual movie pages. It is just a collection page for all the published movies for a given game.
On the downside however, this would require a complete makeover of the site's code, and would also make it more difficult do things such as list a selection of movies. People posting periodic WIPs would have to update the page manually every time, and I could imagine this system being particularly flawed and open for abuse. Putting WIPs in the same light as a full movie is a mistake, because WIPs may not be final, and may not have proper encodes.
I'm aware that it requires a makeover of the site's code. This is only a suggestion that I'd like to see come true one day. What do you mean by listing a selection of movies? Imagine you visit the site as a casual viewer. You type in "Pokemon" and the collection page, in the best case, appears right at the top with the trick pages and individual movie pages after it. When I was saying that WIPs could be added too, I had something in mind like OGA's & smns72's Kirby Super Star any% WIP that has been there for 2 years. Maybe one wouldn't need to update the page regularly since the info "Ah! This run is in the works" could be enough. Also, maybe the WIP link could take you somewhere where the WIP is to be found, like the game's forum topic... I understand that such a page can be flawed, but in my eyes it's better than what we have now: A search engine with the movies mixed together (hard to find). In the case of GB Pokémon, someone unaware doesn't even know how many categories there are. The only link between the same game's movies (the entry history) doesn't give a clue either since the GB Pokémon games (Yellow, Green, Red, Blue) aren't treated the same by the site's system. They aren't even given any categories like "Save-Corruption", "Doko Kashira Door glitch" etc.
SInce WIPs may not necassarily be up to the site's standard, we should wait for the movie to be accepted before committing changes to any movie pages.
Then only add WIPs that are of proper quality and have a high chance of being published.
The "we have too many categories" problem is not a problem because we have a bad site layout, it's a problem because of movie redundancy. The site's main goal is entertainment, and several redundant goals for a single movie creates too many similarities. The problem isn't that we don't have enough page space, the problem is that we have too many movies that are exactly the same.
In the case of GB Pokémon: There is primo's Pokémon Blue TAS which uses a walk through walls glitch. Then the Pokémon Yellow TAS in 2 minutes popped up which uses an inventory glitch. The new Pokémon Red TAS (which obsoletes Pokémon Blue) uses the inventory glitch too, making it partially redundant. However, the Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Red movies still play in the same league. On my example pic, I added a small comment behind those movies which can give a hint that the obsoleted movie might be interesting to watch.
(On this issue, my opinion is that 3 categories for a game is usually enough, unless different versions of the games or hacks, are sufficiently different to warrant separate publications. For example, I consider most hacks to be different enough to the original game to warrant separate publications, and that maybe 2 or 3 hacks of certain games should be accepted as long as they are well made. Also, for more popular games, there should be more leniancy on the number of categories, because these are the movies that the general public finds more entertaining and are more likely to be viewed.)
I think that more movies of a game is better if the categories are accepted / non-arbitrary and if they are presented well. It needs to be discussed on a game-per-game basis though. As you can see on the example pic, there can be 6 different categories for Pokémon. Now which categories would you cut? I'm not really a fan of hacks so I can't give an opinion on that. Maybe those can be added as a side-category or bonus material on the game's collection page.
Also, if you do want the site to change, it's probably best to do it youself. I can imagine that people like adelikat put the site's layout as low priority, but if there is someone who has the means and the motivation to do so, and the support of TASVideos users, then I can imagine a change taking place. However, as it stands, I don't think many changes are going to occur for a while.
I lack the ability to program. After all, this is only a suggestion. I could imagine that those collection pages could be created manually, but it isn't a good thing to do as the pages can become outdated if not updated for a while.
Commenting on the mockup, there are good reasons to have a screenshot on a per-TAS basis, or at least in your mockup on a per-branch basis (obsoleted ones need not apply for this display).
I think obsoleted movies should be included for completion's sake and to make people aware of obsoleted yet interesting runs. --- In my opinion, as things are now such collection pages aren't going to made any time soon. But we can still improve some of the organization on the site. Make sure that the entry history lists all the movies for a given game. As I said earlier, the site's system doesn't treat Pokémon Yellow/Blue/Red/Green as the same game, so the entry history doesn't show all the movies for those games. In the case of SMB3, there is NES warps NES no-warps SNES playaround But the playaround doesn't appear in the entry history because the SNES version's name differs from the NES version's name. There are problably more cases like this. I'm sorry if my wall of text is turning people away from caring about this matter, but I like to discuss a lot about things that I'm interested in, and I'm very interested in improving the site's structure.

Discussion in the latest Pokémon submissions inspired me to create another (and better) example pic. http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/4324/tasv.png To sum it up, this makes everything more tidy, more structured and more pleasant visually. This links movies and movie history nicely together. You can fill such a site with a dozen categories without problems (might get rid of the "we have too many categories" problem partially). You can fill such a page with WIPs too.

I tried around with the level's possibilities and controls and I'm afraid I don't want to TAS this... Good luck! There isn't much you can do in this level, so it won't really matter what you do. You can hardly make it interesting to watch. Just do what you did in the published run.

Thank you for making this run, p4wn3r. I've been speculating for a new run ever since the ZZAZZ glitch was brought up. I said on IRC that I had a couple questions, but I think they are all sorted out. sgrunt: These are the common categories for GB Pokemon as I see it:
  • Normal (US version) --- without save-corruption, using the ZZAZZ glitch
  • Normal (JP version) --- without save-corruption, using the Doko Kashira Door glitch
  • Save-corruption --- resetting during saving is allowed
  • 151 Pokemon --- the 100% run
  • glitchless --- A glitchless category, which wasn't considered yet
In my opinion, these are all valid categories. Arguably, you could cut the Normal US version run since we have the JP run, but the majority of viewers played the US version and so it was always considered to be a 'less glitchy' run. Over time, the US category became glitchier and glitchier and now we have the ZZAZZ run. If there was the possibility to glitch through the game on the US version without save-corruption within 10 minutes, it would be completely justified to cut either the JP or the US run (in my opinion) but as things are now, I can't make a decision myself. Personally, I've never been a fan of category limits if the given categories are all valid and non-arbitrarily executed. Once again I want to bring up the idea of restructuring the site. Every game should have its own page and all the TASes for it should be listed on that page. Right now, the only link between movies for the same game lies in the entry history on each movie's page. It's very chaotic if you ask me... Having pages for each game could get rid of a lot of problems (for example, having a category limit. If there'd be a page for each game, viewers could inform themselves of all the runs that were made and choose for themselves what to watch) and improve organization. Sadly, this suggestion only gets responses like "it's too much work / time-consuming" everytime I bring it up. Off-topic: [362] SNES Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island (USA v1.0) by spezzafer in 1:38:56.6 [1314] SNES Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (USA v1.0) "glitched" by NxCy in 06:08.02 This still hasn't been fixed... Game name should be the same for both runs so that they both appear in each movie's entry history.

EDIT: I'm working on the any% and I finished King Golem. I convinced myself to use resets in this run now. Surprisingly, the game allows soft resets at any point of time. In my opinion soft resets are always okay to use since it doesn't involve turning off the game or pressing some button on the console (NES). Saved 11 seconds so far. OLD POST: I'm making slow progress and now I've been stuck on King Golem for a while. Something is troubling me: Whether or not I should use reset! In my opinion, it takes away from the entertainment and it's confusing. I never wished to use it ever since I began TASing Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, but this time around I'm going for fastest time any% at all costs. So I may need to reconsider... It would save 6 seconds per application, though you lose your ability so it might not get used often (which is an argument for using reset). In the 100% category, resetting would save a lot of time but I would even more wish not to use it there. The game updates completion percentage as soon as you open a treasure, but when it comes to beating bosses (acquiring mirror pieces) you need to wait for the mirror piece cutscene to end before you can reset. In summary, I'd like to use reset in any% but don't want to use it in 100%. Now, I'm not going to run 100% again anyway and whether using reset should be / is up to the author, but well... it's been troubling me. It already troubled me in Kirby Super Star, until I was convinced to use it, but I'm not a real fan of it.

#2494: ISM & Mister's SNES Super Mario World in 10:22.16 submission text: How to reduce lag We have to reconsider lag occurrence, and the current description of lag seems to be neigher sufficient nor essential. Anyway, I'm going to write down what we know about lag, although we are still away from complete understanding. First of all, there is no doubt that lag (both in-level and fedeout) depends on any processings such as sprites' actions, moving layers, fadeout, etc. So if we want to reduce lag, we have to manipulate any of them. But we historically know lag should depend also on score. Why? The game must do sorta many processings around scores; the score is kept in memory addresses as a hexadecimal value, while the score drawn on the screen is decimal, so the game converts a hexadecimal score into a decimal score every frame. I think this conversion makes dozens of processings and thus a large score amounts to increase lag. For the same reason, mario's lives and coins could also increase lag. In order to manipulate lag, it seems enough to hold down the sum of the digits of the score, and the second digits of coins and lives (or also their first digits, but I'm not sure). Because heavy control of scores, lives and coins often keeps smw runs away from being entertaining, it should be traded off for entertainment. The smw any% run is not the case, though.

You can use this lua script. http://pastebin.com/EDFgeggV Or you go to Options > Head-Up Display > Text display options and change the setting to "On screen". This causes (for me at least) some complications with Windows7's transparency on windows and bar, and it flickers a bit, so this isn't a good solution either. klmz should fix this problem in the next version...

It turns out another account of mine got its time limit removed, even though I uploaded copyrighted material that got taken down. My main account still remains unaffected. Was it YT who said only 'clean' accounts get their limit removed?

I tried the SGB version yesterday too, and it works differently indeed. But I wouldn't consider using the SGB version over the GBC version for the TAS, even if it is faster (unless it is faster by a large margin like 1 minute). I'm waiting for the official version of VBA 24 to be released before I investigate/TAS WL2 again.

I don't know what's up with this. I upload to Youtube regularly and I've never had a case of copyright infringement. Never! My account says it's in good standing. I have more than 200 videos and more than 380 subscribers.

Testing Wario Land 2's OoB glitch in Gambatte, a more accurate Gameboy emulator shows that VBA is emulating the OoB area inaccurately. I went out of bounds in the 4th room of the 2nd level (the place where the current WIP goes out of bounds for the first time) and I don't wrap around the screen but instead end up in the OoB area as soon as I hit the top of the room. The area is also different from VBA OoB area and seems to have different effects too. I got the "SAVED DATA doesn't work with this gameboy..." message on Gambatte and the 20 frame improvements still work, but the 10 additional lag frames of white screen are still there. Gambatte download: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gambatte/ So basicly, our WIP is dead and we won't finish this until the emulation inaccuracies are resolved or until there is a Gambatte-rr. Thanks and good night people. It would still be a good thing to test this thing on a real gameboy (which can only be done via cheat codes). Please pm me if you have a cheat device and Wario Land 2 and a Gameboy (color/advance). EDIT: Testing the OoB glitch in VBA24 (klmz' debug build which mixed cores from VBA-m and VBA-rr) shows that it works the same as in Gambatte. So probably we just need to wait for an official version of that project to come out.

The "enter the ground" trick is already known. The first one to report it was DMTM. Here is a movie made by DMTM: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/381256323/DMTM%20-%20Glitch%20Fest%20Super%20Mario%20Bros.%20%28E%29%20Demo%20Movie.fcm

Bisqwit, I know this is something completely different but I wanted to tell you this. I coincidentally saw your Anime clips and that's why I eventually watched most of the Jungle Wa Itsumo Anime. It was a pleasant watch and I want to thank you. Your upload was not in vain. Regarding the uncapping of Youtube time limits, does this mean 'everyone' can upload a video of any time length? I need to test this..

Well, I can understand when people don't want the pause trick to be used. It's the same with the "new" pixel trick in SML2 and the Pokemon beeping sound. It's just too bad... I'm fine with running the game with or without the pausing trick. However, it would be sane to me to try to aim for the fastest time. Of course I'd be interested in other possible improvements, however I wasn't sure if I'd be interested in running the full game... Maybe at a later point of time. I'm fine with being a co-author too. edit: I found that Yacopu can glitch into walls if his speed is ~80. As you might know, every room in a level is connected to a big map so this might enable some shortcuts. But I doubt we will get the chance to build up our speed this high. Maybe there is some ultimative speed trick with the animals in the levels :P

I never played this game before but it sure looks nice for a GB game. I made a small lua script showing X/Y-speed and position and a power-up timer. http://pastebin.com/KBppLk0G In flying form, your normal top speed is 24 (it drops to 23 for a single frame every 16th frame). When landing and immediately jumping again, your speed gets a boost of 3 units. So 24 becomes 27, which then drops to 26, 25, 24... However, I found that these drops can be skipped by pausing the game at the correct times so you can keep your speed and build it up easily. The only negative effect is the pausing sound effect. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1626199139/Trip%20World%20%28J%29-TAS.vbm 249 frames saved in the first level.
