Sure, as long as it's not genesis.

I feel very nostalgic about this run. It's been like 14 years since I played this game. I can remember the eyeball enemies and the flying swords... It would be nice to see a full run, though it seems that I only played the first episode. I probably got a demo version back when I played the game. So I don't have any idea about the rest of the game. Was the slow emulation the reason why you only did episode 1? I always wondered why JPCrr is so much slower than DOSbox and why DOSbox can't be made a rerecording version. Yes vote.

Too many sprites onscreen to load the flag? Very clever. :) But setting up the koopa shells already got you 1600 points so Dwedit stays right about his statement.

Yes it is. Just take a look into the hotkey assigment. I think numbers 0-9 handle the layers by default.

I've been contacting CrazyGameNerd on Youtube some time ago and talked about TASing F-Zero GX. I can't use savestates but after learning how to snake and some other techniques, I decided to make some test TASes. CGN said he can use savestates, so maybe he's going to make some amazing videos in the future. For now, enjoy what we've done so far. Note that all videos use snaking in such a frame-precise manner, it's hardly recognizable as snaking anymore (the direction is changed every other frame). Chapter 5 [29''416] [Very hard] (mugg1991) First TAS. Highly improvable by using MT (Momentum Throttle) wisely when going to the sides. Chapter 2 [31''772] [Very hard] (mugg1991) I messed up two shiftboosts and bumped into a wall, otherwise a good run. Chapter 2 [32''258] [Normal] (CrazyGameNerd) Just for testing. Chapter 3 [52''221] [Very hard] (mugg1991) Chapter 2 [25''919] [Hard] (CrazyGameNerd) This is the best TAS of Chapter 2 so far and the first TAS of this game to use savestates. No shiftboosts were used, but CGN says speed can go up to 12,000 km/h when at 5,500 km/h (for 1 frame). So I'm wondering if it is possible to keep this speed or even building it up more. To be honest, I think that F-Zero GX videos will look a lot better when fully optimized. You can probably keep speed very high above 5000 km/h I'd think, but I'd like to get involved and find some TAS-based tricks for now. We're going to run the remaining chapters.

I'd do it with Avisynth, like this: Top = Avisource("original.avi").Crop(0,0,-0,-192) Bottom = Avisource("original.avi").Crop(0,192,-0,-0).AddBorders(0,10,0,0, $000000) Final = StackVertical(Top,Bottom) return Final Of course, you may want to adjust the bar height.

Just make sure the WIPs also get posted to the corresponding game threads.

Here is a regular speedrun by neskamikaze, which was posted on SDA today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=so5zns80lX8 I think this could be used as a sample video to base the TAS on. I haven't TASed anything recently and I'm not sure if I'm going to run this game. If anyone wants to give this a try, please go ahead. But please notify me if someone works on a TAS.

I think RBA, BA and possibly DoT skip shouldn't be used in low% and 100%.
Why?
Because low% and 100% are about item completion. RBA and BA are glitches that help complete large portions of your inventory or get desired items (from what I've heard), through a normally illegitimate way. 100% should be about playing through the game and getting every items normally. Obtaining items with the use of a glitch just doesn't seem impressive in that regard (compare to 151 pokemon in the pokemon yellow TAS). About low% I heard that RBA and BA can't be used since they involve getting more items than required. But the point would still have been there: From a low% run I expect cleverness and interesting sequence breaks. I don't want a lame glitch to be used to beat the game with as few items as possible since that just doesn't feel like a 'true' low% run to me. DoT skip was just mentioned since I think it might help making those categories more 'true' if it isn't being used, but I'm actually undecided there.

I think RBA, BA and possibly DoT skip shouldn't be used in low% and 100%. Also, I think maybe it's more worthwhile to focus on low% for now? There was much work done towards that at some point, it's actually not very long and it would be interesting to watch. 100% on the other hand needs a lot of route-planning from what I've seen and seems very far from being TASed. Just my opinion.

I agree that a better port of the game ought to be used. Also, I saw a TAS of this GB port just recently on nicovideo... maybe I'm going to post about it later (unless it's indeed p4wn3r's movie).

First of all, what you posted about and what the thread title is about are two different things, unless I'm confusing something. So I'll give answers to both. "How to record a movie from a save state?" --> It's not possible for now to my knowledge. But you can select a .dsm (save file) which the movie starts with. "when I load a savestate while recording a movie it always tells me "movie recording stopped", how can I make it record?" --> That shouldn't be. Do you use Read-only toggle? I'm imagining that you are loading a state that you just saved, while in read-only mode, then advance a frame. In that case the movie recording will stop. You need to use Read+write mode when you want to overwrite your progress and you need to use Read only when you want to rewatch a part of your progress (the loaded state must be from the current movie).

I like spectacular goofs. These goofs are just stupid newbie mistakes, they take effort to setup at times. Yet you still manage to succeed in winning. This should clearly not be accepted as a speedrun. But we do other stuff than that.
You do realize that the movie was submitted in 2005?

Where does he state that? To my knowledge, he is afraid of submitting it since he doesn't want other people to reupload his TAS. I already talked to him about it but he didn't make a final decision on whether he submits his run yet, it seems.

I don't think memory is corrupted here but read and executed where it shouldn't be. My suggestion is to call the category "tent glitch".

I didn't participate in task 2 because I didn't know Klonoa and I didn't have the interest to TAS it. I'm more interested in the tasks as individual competitions rather than the high score for all the tasks combined. I'm not a fan of genesis but I will see. I don't have a problem to TAS 2 player without multitrack.

I tried a lot already and talked back and forth about this issue with skid_au, a Dolphin developer who seems to be investigating the issue. I tried changing the memory card slots to <nothing>, tried disabling dual core, tried changing graphic plugins. But it didn't help at all and frame skipping was already at 0 to begin with.

I investigated the issue further and it seems that after loading a savestate, the emulation locks up after a few seconds. It doesn't matter if the emulation was paused or not. It happens on r43xx ~ r62xx and 2.0, but apparently other people don't have this problem. AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 925 Processor 2.80 GHz Windows 7, 32 bit ATI Radeon HD 5670 After loading a state, if I save a new state the lock-up doesn't occur. If I save a state and restart the emulator and load it, is is still likely to lock up the emulation, but it takes more time. If I replace the Dolphin folder and reboot my computer, there is a rare chance that the hanging issue doesn't occur at all (until the emulator's next crash or until I press "left", "down" or "right" (hangs the emulation if used in conjunction with frame stepping)). This is unconfirmed information though as the bug behaves randomly. I tried TASing knowing that saving a state can cure the hanging issue, but after loading a state, the emulator doesn't receive input for about ~50 frames! Also, if I load a state&save a new one before a target test level or HRC, the countdown and timer behaves differently. It may go 0.10, 0.3, 0.0 or it may go 0.10, 0.6, 0.0. May be related to SSBM(PAL) but it certainly makes TASing impossible for me, with and without savestates. At best, I can TAS without rewinding but it leads to results that look worse than human playing. I wonder how AJP made his AR TASes... Here is a vid of the hanging issue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RPnC0MQjsU
