As of today, Maru is relieved from staff. TASVideos staff as a whole found him to not properly fit within our ranks as a team member, and we wish him the best of luck in any other ventures.

Another Pokémon generation is now done without needing to leave town (sort of). Well done. Yes vote.

It's been great to have GoddessMaria on staff over the last five years. Thank you for all the judging work you've done all this time. Wish you the best going forward.

Questions: • In the Team Battle, is it at all possible to prevent the teammate from taking damage the same way as the Giant Battle? It's well known that teammates on Very Hard difficulty are notoriously weak, so being able to protect them would be a good additional measure of TAS superhuman play.
It's possible, but I found Fox dying immediately to be funnier.
Zowayix wrote:
• I vaguely recall it should be possible to one-hit KO the opponent during the Metal Battle with one Egg Lay at 0%, because of their fast fallspeed and poor recovery? Did you choose not to do this for entertainment purposes, or am I remembering things wrong?
Entertainment purposes, but also at 0% the AI would mash out really quickly. I would have to set it up very deep in order to work successfully and lure the Metal character way over to the edge, which I didn't really like.
Zowayix wrote:
• Is 173 credits the max possible from a fresh save file, or is it possible to e.g. pick up more trophies that unlock extra credits?
This was answered above - there are 172 credits from a clean save (this movie unlocks one during the run via a trophy), and 190 in total with everything unlocked.

There's also no timer in this fight, which means I can't even replicate any of the popular aMSa vs. Hungrybox tournament battles.
• Sorry, I'm confused - how does the lack of a timer weigh in here?
aMSa vs. Hungrybox tournament sets are famously drawn out. For example, their set at Smash Summit 8 last year was won by time-out in game 5.

Basically this, but I come from a background of competitive Melee. I was expecting a lot of technical, humanly infeasible combos utilizing techniques like edge cancels, ala Home Run Contest TAS, but instead I got to see 100 clearly slow egg throws and ledge camping. I'm not sure what part of camping the edge appealed to your entertainment sense of a superplay.
You're well entitled to your own opinion if you didn't find the movie entertaining, but based on this comment I question if you were watching this movie or a different one. Edge cancels are used in almost every stage to extend combos all over the place, and the combos in general go significantly beyond what even top humans could do in these sorts of scenarios.
Fishaman P wrote:
I was also disappointed to see Charizard used during the Team Falcon fight, as opposed to a probably more optimal option like Moltres.
Charizard would in fact be more optimal than Moltres on paper, because he has close to the same KO power on 10-man-Melee opponents, while staying out for longer. Not that that was the point when I made the movie as it is, but still. On the point of an option being boring/disappointing because it's not "optimal", would it have been better if I did dtilt fair to KO everyone in the movie instead? Fighting game TASes are notoriously un-entertaining if they try to be "optimal", so I question if there is even a possible winning strategy here.
Fishaman P wrote:
Finally, the movement techniques displayed throughout are completely unimpressive to me because I regularly see top technical players perform them, and I do them myself when playing around in real time. It got very stale to see boost running/Charliewalking displayed as some sort of God Gamer movement.
If you think that Charlie walking is the "God Gamer movement" of this movie then I'm honestly not sure what to say. The movie is full of platform movement that even top Yoshis like aMSa don't/can't do - I've never seen any of them do things like shield drop double jump wavelanding across platforms for faster movement, because of the sheer amount of frame-perfect inputs required at once. Also not to mention all the perfect parries and punishes out of parries that Yoshi players also don't do (parry DJ land fsmash on the Falcon Punch is a simple example). I, likewise, come from a background of competitive Melee. I've played Avalancer/nebbii regularly (never beaten him, but taken games several times and gotten close to taking sets a few times). I know what he can and cannot do (and what other top Yoshis likewise can or cannot do). This TAS does a few things that they could do, but it also does many, many things that they would never be able to do.

1) Hitting Zelda against the walls and ceiling in Hyrule Castle repeatedly and then standing around with Hammer is basicly pure CPU abuse. TAS can do better than that. You have to assume that if the CPU was human-controlled, he could simply wall-tech and DI out of these situations. Maybe it's possible to do something else instead, in that part of the run.
I'm aware there were various things I might have been able to do. Most of the rest of the movie already consists of true or inescapable combos, so I figured there was room for some CPU abuse, and the Cave of Life is a well-known staple of casual play. In general, AIs are never going to tech (in these settings), so I might as well just make some use of that.
MUGG wrote:
2) It seems a score of 190 is possible but this run only gets 173. I don't know if this is because of version differences. Otherwise I would like for this run to achieve the maximum score.
The maximum amount of credits is 172 on a clean save (numerics' TAS gets this), and goes up to 190 with everything unlocked. I get 173 because one of the trophies obtained during the run unlocked the Param (Doshin the Giant) credits entry. This was noted in the submission text.
MUGG wrote:
3) At the very start of the game, at 0:03 in the video, there is an unlock message. Why?
Unlocking Mushroom Kingdom II. This is detailed in the submission text, there's an 1/84 chance that it gets unlocked immediately on a clean save, and I manipulated this to be the case. The unlock text ("Mushroom Kingdom II is open: it's the dream world, Subcon!") is visible for 1 frame if you play back the YouTube video frame-by-frame at 60fps.
MUGG wrote:
If you opted to take damage, you could have done a faster Race to the Finish. But I'm not saying if you should or shouldn't do it. I'm just mentioning this.
Avoiding taking damage was a deliberate choice throughout the whole movie. I know it could be done faster otherwise - this was also noted in the submission text.

Under consideration of the timer oddities, it seems you have achieved a Btt time of 6.78, which is 1 frame faster than the known possible record of 6.80. Is this correct? Timer running down and stuck at .21 translates to 48 frames taken. Timer running up and stuck at .78 translates to 48 frames taken.
The recorded time is 6.80. I don't know why the Classic Mode countdown timer makes it look 1 frame faster.

A few weeks back, DyllonStej posted a video comparing run and wavedash speeds for every character. It's a quite useful reference video (especially for wavedashes), and I think it's useful to have its statistics compiled somewhere for easier reference. All numbers represent the number of frames it takes to move from one side of Battlefield to the other. All wavedashes use perfect timing and angles.

By what measure is Yoshi a "slow character"? I'm trying to puzzle this comment together, but it at least cannot be ground speed, air speed, or attack speed, as Yoshi is above average in all those categories, and it definitely isn't APM, as Yoshi at this level of precision is one of the highest APM characters in the game (with only Fox and maybe Falco as reasonable competition at TAS-level APM). I'm struggling to think of what your expectations were here.

If you can use version-specific tricks or routes in the Japanese version, then that would be preferred to use, and such a movie would obsolete a published movie on the English version. The exact rules on game versions/regional differences can be found here.

Based on our movie rules on Japanese and US versions, using the US version is generally preferred. However, we do need to know exactly how many frames are lost from using the US version instead of the Japanese version. Otherwise, we can't tell if this movie actually is an improvement over the currently published movie.

We would probably need a comparison of text differences between the JPN and USA versions. I assume USA version loses lots of time there, but would like to know for sure how much time it is.

For BtT it most likely doesn't really matter, as there are no AIs that would be influenced by 20XX's changes, and I don't know of any other 20XX changes/glitches that would otherwise impact BtT.

This has been known for more than a decade, but are there any instances in things like Target Test where this may be relevant? Thinking of something like maybe being able to walljump a frame sooner somewhere if you play as green Falcon. But there's also a good chance that the difference is too minor to affect anything relevant at all.

I changed the game title to the last one. It's consistent with how other Pokémon games are labeled, and to me it looks slightly more common than "Pokémon White Jade", although none of the names are all that common or easy to search for, as the game is so obscure on the internet. The one sort-of standard I could find is "NonGoodNES", which titles the file as "Pokemon - White Jade Version (China)". We do need to think about the naming thing more thoroughly though, in order to be consistent with how we have titled other bootleg games in the past.

I think system ID is hard set once the submission is made, you'd need a senior staff member to change it.

I kept laughing for 4 days and now that I finally stopped, I honestly think this movie's content is kinda acceptable as a demonstration. There's always a chance that if it is accepted, it will get all 3s for entertainment, but the way it's done resonates quite well with what the audience enjoys. It's like the first ever true ACE TAS: it wasn't as impressive as [3050] NES Super Mario Bros. 3 "arbitrary code execution" by Lord_Tom in 08:16.23 and [3358] GBC Pokémon: Yellow Version "arbitrary code execution" by MrWint in 05:48.28, but it looked truly novel and fresh, so people were really impressed. Maybe it still gets rejected for using a non-approved setup, which we still want to start supporting soontm. Then whenever we do, it can be accepted?
I thought about this, but I think there are a lot of complications. • Fundamentally, this is not TASing a game; it is TASing free access to an operating system, with an arbitrarily loaded set of applications. • Since it's an operating system and not a game, there are no such concepts as a game ending, or completion state, or really anything else that makes this properly judgable. (Optimization is not a strictly relevant point, as it is considered a playaround). • Our rules for movies, including ACE playarounds, still require that the game appears to be completed. This movie does some funny stuff to simulate an ending, but inducing a kernel panic is still not a proper completion state. And if we pretend it is, we'll need to re-evaluate all "fastest crash" submissions. • The movie plays an effectively random set of applications, partially in parallel even. It's nicely done, but takes away any idea of the movie being anything else but "messing around with a pre-defined set of tools on an operating system" instead of doing anything game-specific. (Some of the games played aren't even properly completed). I don't think messing around for a few minutes without an overarching goal really suits the kinds of movies and playarounds we publish on this site. It's a really funny video. But it's not a publishable TAS by a large stretch. In my mind, it clearly belongs to Gruefood Delight.

TheAxeMan and TiKevin83 have joined TASVideos staff as ambassadors. TheAxeMan has joined up with dwangoAC at RPGLimitBreak, and TiKevin83 has appeared at multiple GDQs and is looking at representing us at ESA at some point in the future, so it's good to have their efforts recognized. dwangoAC will be taking up senior ambassador role. Let's give a warm welcome to our expanded ambassador staff!

Wasn't it possible in one of the games (I believe MM3, with its second controller codes) to live with 0 HP and be unable to fire the Mega Buster as long as you have 0 HP? This means that at least in some cases, the ability to fire the Mega Buster is quite literally tied to Mega Man's life energy.

An argument could be made that if the P bar is empty, Mega Man is also unable to fire that weapon, and would be considered as being out of juice.

I just got around to watching it. Regarding entertainment, it's similar to All Bosses, if maybe a bit toned down. Considering All Bosses is one of my favorite TASes on the whole site, I would consider this a good thing. When I first started watching it, I felt a bit mixed. The route felt a bit awkward at times, entering rooms for the sake of entering rooms or making weird paths through larger rooms just so all the boxes were marked off. As it went on, however, it started to grow on me. I actually really liked seeing Burnt Paradise and Nation of Fools in this run, because in All Bosses they are skipped almost entirely. Buried Chamber was also nice to see because I'm pretty sure it's completely skipped in literally every other PoR run. Sticking around in areas for longer than usual also gave the OST some more time to shine at some parts, which helped for me. Then there were also gimmicks like the cars in the clock tower that otherwise are unseen that were fun to see here. So all in all, it was a very fun run to watch. As for whether it's publishable, there are various factors to consider. • We already have four PoR publications, as many as Super Metroid currently. • It's still very much comparable to All Bosses, but longer. We want to avoid having too many branches, or branches that are not sufficiently different enough from each other. • On the other hand, there are various parts of the game seen here that are not seen in any other PoR TAS, such as Buried Chamber. • The game has many, many things to count for full completion. Subweapons, spells, monster library, quests, items, bosses and so on - yet its percentage counter is determined solely by map fill and it is filled to 1000% here, so it would count as a valid full completion category for that reason. Essentially, this is the reverse of the Super Metroid situation, where items are counted for percentage but map fill is not. I'm not fully decided on it yet.
