Following discussion surrounding this submission, and the current rules on Game Boy modes brought up within, and some IRC discussion related to these, I figured it's time to update the rules on Game Boy modes. These rules are basically an old relic from back when VBA-rr was the only available option, and the situation regarding Game Boy emulation and especially Super Game Boy emulation has changed a lot since then. The old rule wasn't really enforced anyway, and several publications have broken it in recent times. Here's my take on how the Game Boy mode rules should be, based on what has been going on: • If neither Super Game Boy enhancements nor Game Boy Color's full-color graphics are supported, Game Boy mode should be used. • If Game Boy Color's full-color graphics are not supported, but Super Game Boy enhancements are available in the game (i.e. borders, dynamic palette changes, and/or other exclusive features within the game), then either Game Boy mode or Super Game Boy mode can be used. Both are accepted, but movies of the same game and category can obsolete one another based on whichever has the shortest in-game run time based on frame count. • If the game has full-color graphics for Game Boy Color, Game Boy Color mode should be used. If the Super Game Boy mode also unlocks notable exclusive gameplay features, then SGB mode may also be accepted for a movie that makes use of said exclusive features. • If running a Game Boy Color game in a Game Boy Advance mode enables extra features, that can also be used. Like Super Game Boy for Game Boy games, either method is accepted, but movies of the same game and category can obsolete one another based on whichever has the shortest in-game run time based on frame count. Alongside that, SGB Mode in VBA-rr is to be banned entirely, as it is purely an emulation hack and does not properly emulate a game inside an SGB at all. (Other Game Boy modes in VBA-rr also are set to be deprecated and eventually no longer accepted, but that's a separate discussion). If anyone has other ideas, I am open to ideas.

Cool! This is a much needed topic, thanks for making it. I have a question regarding this rule:
Play games that are emulated well. Emulation of several platforms such as Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn, and PlayStation is still far from perfect, and some games work worse than others. This may be grey area on such systems, but we generally aim to publish videos that look like they could be played back on the original video game system. Movies of games that are not emulated well (have graphical or functional glitches that do not exist on the real console) should not be submitted.
My question is, what can be done about runs that accepted and published, yet break this rule by being emulated quite poorly, if they cannot be improved in gameplay? I have in mind several A2600 runs: [2228] A2600 Bobby is Going Home by Lollorcaust in 01:16.13 [2585] A2600 Dodge 'Em by yep2yel & morningpee in 00:52.93 [2226] A2600 Superman "pause glitch" by jlun2 in 00:11.42 There is very likely no way to improve gameplay in these (certainly not Superman or Bobbie is going home, Dodge'em might have a chance.) Yet, it seems there should be a means to replace them with runs that are accurate given how obviously poor the emulation is just by watching the encodes, even if they are the same length (or possibly longer.) So, assuming that no further improvements are possible: Is it acceptable to submit a new run that is identical in gameplay to an existing run where the only improvement is accurate emulation?
Any submission that aims to improve upon and obsolete an existing publication record must come with an actual improvement of the run. It makes no sense to obsolete a movie when its time record is not beaten, only tied. So no, a submission that does not prove itself to be an actual improvement to a published equivalent run will not be accepted, even if it is done on a better emulator. Instead, the best course of action would be to update a movie file with the improved emulation resync directly (maintaining the integrity of the record). Unfortunately, we don't currently have a framework for doing this, or for dealing with side effects (such as keeping track of side effects, like encodes needing to be updated) - but we hopefully can work to make that possible in the future. For now, the best course of action is probably just to post updated movie files in the threads for the respective publications, then hopefully it will be possible to update the movie publications with those later.

Yeah, I've added a note for that. Note that it is not a new rule, nor is it exclusive to DOS - runs on other systems (like DS) have already made use of RTC settings for years.

I doubt memory size settings make much difference, unless emulated memory size is constrained to a point that the emulated system runs out of memory. In any case I don't see any reason to set it any higher or lower than the default.

I have now added a rule about configuring the CPU frequency divider in JPC-rr, based on DrD2k9's proposal.
DOS movies (JPC-rr) CPU frequency restrictions CPU frequency settings may be restricted or not, depending on the game. • If a game's speed is limited to real-world time or screen refresh, CPU frequency may be maximized by setting CPU frequency divider to 1 (emulating a 1GHz CPU). • If a game's speed is limited only by CPU frequency or clock speed, CPU frequency may be set no faster than JPC-rr's default of 50 (emulating a 20MHz CPU). In other words, the CPU frequency divider settings may not be set any lower than 50. This limit may be stretched if proof can be provided that the game was designed to run on faster systems than the 20MHz default. In other words, if increasing the CPU clock speed affects and speeds up all normal gameplay, it must be capped at most to the emulator's default setting, or to a frequency the game is proven to be designed for. If increasing the CPU clock speed only affects lag or loading times and does not otherwise speed up gameplay to any significant extent, it may be set to the emulator's maximum.

Oh good now i can question this openly, I saw some SMW:Hacks here already "The legend continues" or "Kaizo" so my question was if the "Vip&Wall Series" would also be a good choice. it has definitely unique mechanics and quirks.
The general rule for TASes of hacks is that the hack must be high quality and notable with a good following. Alongside that, they must provide unique and different content compared to the original game and to other (published) hacks, while also being considered as entertaining on their own merits (fulfilling Moons requirements). Therefore, as audience feedback is an important aspect, no guarantee can be given towards any hack's publishability. If the audience does not consider a TAS of a hack entertaining, it cannot be published. On the specific subject (VIP Mario series), the hack series appears to be popular/notable enough, and looks like it provides unique enough gameplay when compared to currently published hacks. Therefore, I think it could be eligible for publication, as long as audience response is favorable enough and agrees it is unique enough. Note that publication would most likely only be restricted to a single run from the hack series, as the different hack installments would overlap with each other in terms of content style. In the case multiple movies of the series are available as submissions or publications, the movie that shows off the hack series and its content the best would be favored over other movies which would be rejected, or obsoleted if already published.

It's come to my attention that it happens relatively often that someone needs to ask whether something they're working on can be accepted, how the rules apply to a certain run or game, etc., without there really being a good way to ask these questions outside of direct chat. So, I am now making a central topic for that purpose, so questions can be asked and answers recorded here. Note that questions must be on topic in relation to judge roles - off-topic posts may be moved or deleted. Please remember to read the movie rules or class rules, particularly standard rules, to see if your question already may have a clear answer.

I second adelikat's agreement to DrD2k9's proposal, and will write it into the movie rules when I have time later. I was going to do it sooner, but got sidetracked and forgot about it. In any case, you can consider the new proposal as accepted as of now.

Right. So the point shouldn't be whether somebody calls it a cheat mode, but what the option actually does. For instance, site precedent shows that cheat codes that unlock a higher difficulty mode are perfectly valid for a TAS. Because instantly skipping to the last level or getting permanent invincibility (both common codes in Apogee games) are a whole different cup of tea than spending two seconds and one hit point to launch an energy bolt. Anyway, I would be interested in hearing slamo's assesment on whether these codes would be a time saver in the first place (because it appears they require you to stand still for two seconds). That may make the issue moot without setting precedent against secret special moves in other games.
Getting extra weapons is not a higher difficulty mode, and it's not even remotely comparable. There is no difficulty added in having the option to use extra tools. Just because it doesn't literally skip to the end of the game or make a playthrough entirely trivial doesn't mean it's not a free benefit towards the user.

It's ambiguous at best, and the fact that it is ambiguous is why I'm erring on the safe side and not accepting a potential cheat. I based this on the fact that the official Apogee website lists the secret weapons in a page titled "cheat codes". That, and the fact that the inputs are done by decidedly unusual and cheatcode-like maneuvers with little relation to their effects, such as "press left/right 6-7 times and hit jump" for a shield.

I mean edit the movie file directly.
That is flatly impossible without basically re-TASing the whole game because of lag management alone. As I said before, SGB has more lag, and this movie already has 10000+ lag frames to deal with. All of that would need to be re-done and re-optimized, and then there's also RNG, etc.
zhangsongcui wrote:
VBA-rr is still acceptable, has no obvious bugs playing this game and, is good, easy-to-use enough.
VBA-rr has many, many issues, and if I had free reins over what emulators people are allowed to use without backlash, I'd ban VBA-rr in a heartbeat. Here are some reasons not to use VBA-rr: - Wrong framerate (flat 60 FPS), resulting in inaccurate timing - Variable frame length. Loading times are counted as a single frame in VBA-rr, even if the real time is longer than that. Because of this, many GB/GBC movies (not sure about GBA) don't even match their own reported time, often being reported as shorter than the real time by multiple seconds. - Its SGB "emulation" is entirely a hack, and barely even qualifies as emulating an SGB. It just tricks the game into enabling SGB functions and artificially puts a border around the screen - no SGB internals are actually being emulated, nor are many of its features. - General emulation inaccuracy - No TAStudio or TAS Editor tool, which sucks for people who use it for TASing, including Tremane here.
zhangsongcui wrote:
Yes we have made the movie using bizhawk. I just suggest that if we could switch to bizhawk 2 for SGB mode.
I don't know about Tremane, but I personally have zero interest in creating basically the same as this movie all over again but with more lag and slower startup.

I like the double screen because it shows how messed up the world map is, with the routes that are taken in it. But yeah, either with or without works.

Also, SGB in BizHawk would lose about 300 frames due to longer startup, and would lose several more frames due to extra lag overall. GB is noticeably less laggy than SGB for this game.

Faster title screen. There's no "licensed by Nintendo" message at the start, which saves 238 frames.

Because BizHawk's SGB support is was incomplete and extremely buggy (before BizHawk 2.0). Generally speaking, no SGB movie has been submitted/published ever since VBA-rr got deprecated, in favor of plain GB runs. (In fact, the most recently published SGB movie is my previous Mega Man V TAS.) See also e.g. Pokémon.

Ugh, that is 10x more unwatchable content! Personally I think the end point is well before 999 if we wanted to really be scientific about this. The game stops getting more difficult well before then.

I fixed the movie with the Air Man improvement, and subsequent route change for the rest of that episode. 867 frames were saved in total. Submission has been updated. I'll update the encode and such later.

Nice findings, Challenger! - Nice find on that move by Air Man, I wasn't aware that move would render him stun-invincible. I guess I hadn't tested for that boss battle hard enough. Being able to quick-kill Air Man this way means that a new route should move him to second-last, so other bosses have lower health, but still putting him before Gemini Man. (EDIT: Putting Air Man before Gemini Man conflicts with the Gemini Man startup bug, but it's still worthwhile to put Air Man after Quick Man) - This seems really situational, and most likely useless, because generally to hit or fire shots optimally you need to be close to the boss, and it takes a lot of movement to move the camera far enough away that the boss is fully offscreen. - As far as I'm aware, it doesn't make a difference time-wise, but I may need to look into this more. EDIT: Looks like it indeed makes a difference, dang. That's up to about 1-2 seconds that can be saved after each non-Wily boss fight. I guess I ignored it/didn't look into it because it doesn't count for game time anyway. Now to see how much work it is to resync RNG for almost all of the fights, and if it's worth doing... EDIT 2: Yeah no, that would effectively entail redoing most parts of every fight. I'm not feeling interested currently in tackling this for one more month just to shorten post-boss sequence times. I'll still look into the Air Man improvement though.

Since it seems an improvement is in the works, should this run be cancelled?

USA/English is preferred, but Japanese is also acceptable. If you prefer to use the Japanese version, that's perfectly fine, and we will accept such a run (provided it follows other movie rules). More on this is in the movie rules.
