grassini, you too, tone down the confrontational tone. I know you're trying to make a point with it, but we've already had enough fixating on the opposing side's persons (from both sides) rather than proper arguments in this thread. Pit topics against each other, not people.

You can criticize someone's discourse without calling them names. Just focus on the discourse, and ignore whatever isn't. If the discourse itself is worthless, then you can make that clear without going on about the poster.

And aren't computers and million times faster than the NES?
Clock speed of the original console does not matter that much. There are many other factors in play for emulation speed, such as hardware quirks. For instance, emulating a SNES accurately costs about 3 GHz, despite the actual SNES processor clocking at only 3.58 MHz. Sure, many emulators for e.g. NES are plenty fast, but I'm not sure you can find one today that runs at 60,000,000 FPS unthrottled on current computers.

The USA version seems longer without really adding much meaningful content gameplay-wise (just more iterations of the barrel stage), so I would say it's not required.

That's interesting. I would say then that we can define the completion point as to beat 75m in level 22, as that is the last beatable level in the game (to current knowledge).

Tompa pointed out to me a zipping trick that allows Rex clip into a wall and zip upwards (this was used in a Bamse speedrun I wasn't aware of). This saves time on a few places in Castle 2, Castle 3 and Tower 2. So I've redone the stages from Castle 2 on, saving 2504 frames (00:41.92s) in total. (Besides the zips, there's also a 2 second improvement in Castle-Boss because I found out the boss starts its destroy animation after 8 hits rather than 10, allowing more time to set up a jump over the boss and its spikes while it gets destroyed). New movie file: Pie

Oh wow, I didn't expect anyone to ever pick this game up! It's good to see some improvements over the test I did. I actually have a quick test run of the whole game somewhere that I never actually uploaded to the site. Nice clip into the slope for faster acceleration, I hadn't noticed that was possible. I also see various other minor improvements over mine. However I notice that you aren't using the graphical glitch that I mentioned. I didn't state that it was useful in the thread, but later on I found out that you can use it to drop below those moving platforms which I believe saved a small amount of time. That being said; I don't know whether it applies to this version of the game, though they appear to be almost identical. I guess I can just upload my full test just in case you're curious. Your run is still faster by about 30-40s. (Bizhawk 1.8.1 Was used btw) http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/35586142804728513 Great run though, it's good to see some obscure games getting attention!
I was aware of the graphical glitch, but never used it because it adds a lot of lag. I tried doing it for the moving platforms, but wasn't able to reproduce falling through one. Not sure how much effect the extra lag would have in the long run.

I am replying now because I just realized something that has been bugging me for 6-7 years but I forgot to look for when I first watched this TAS. There is an emulation error where there is supposed to be rain in the two routes beside Weather Institute, but there is none in this or any TAS of RSE published on this site. It is shown in Part 31/32 of the Speed Demos Archive RTA for Pokemon Sapphire (the site does not allow emulators except in extreme circumstances, usually involving ancient PC systems): https://youtu.be/2MdnxI5NwAs https://youtu.be/WPz092TbWHs (from http://speeddemosarchive.com/demo.pl?PokemonSapphire_15421) IIRC, the error appears in all VBA versions when recording a movie (strangely, this error doesn't occur when not recording a movie). I had hoped that mGBA in BizHawk fixed this problem, but apparently not, at least for this version of the mGBA core, because the error still happens in this TAS. Note: I did not check the most recent BizHawk. This error is not merely cosmetic; it affects the rival battle after leaving Weather Institute and the lack of rain means that three rain-related dialogs which are supposed to be in the battle aren't there.
Are you sure that this is an emulation error? As far as I recall, the rain in these routes is time-based, so whether or not there is rain present in these areas would depend on when the run was started/when the RTC was configured. The current real-time glitchless WR by Exarion, for instance, also has no rain in the area (starting at around 1:12 in the run), and that was played on a GB Player.

Just mainly been observing this topic. Isn't FractalFusion's TAS falsified due to how he set his GBHawk's core up by setting Equal Length Frames?
No. For one, the submission has Equal Length Frames set to false as well. Second, alternative timing emulator settings do not necessarily invalidate a run - see also Advanced Bus Timing for DeSmuME runs. Third, several Pokémon runs already use the same setting, such as most current MrWint publications. (And likely other GBHawk publications as well.)

At 9 years, 3 months and 17 days, this is actually currently only the thirty-sixth longest obsoletion. The current longest ones are: Super Mario Bros. 3 100%, 2001-02-05 to 2015-05-04 - 14 years, 2 months and 29 days (although this was technically a retroactive obsoletion, and the first movie predates the site) The Combatribes, 2004-11-04 to 2016-07-30 - 11 years, 8 months and 26 days Metal Storm, 2005-02-27 to 2016-05-21 - 11 years, 2 months and 24 days Prince of Persia, 2005-11-05 to 2016-12-01 - 11 years and 26 days Battletoads "warpless 1p", 2005-04-14 to 2016-04-17 - 11 years and 3 days Just some fun trivia.

The current official answer seems to be "this is just how it is, end of discussion", which doesn't feel quite satisfactory, to me at least.
Create a topic in encoders' corner about what sort of encode filters or quality settings should be used, if you want to continue discussing about that. A submission topic is not the place for discussing broad (potential) policy changes.

I just went through the battle myself (by the way, it's the Maxie 1 fight, not Archie). It is indeed possible to OHKO all three of Maxie's mons with crits without using an X-Attack. In fact, it looks like the mons are around crit-OHKO range even if the crit didn't negate the -1 attack (which indeed it does in every gen). I'd chalk this up to just an accidental oversight or miscalculation. It can happen sometimes. It only costs about six seconds in a >2 hour run, so it is not the biggest deal out there.

There's an issue with the mGBA RTC code in BizHawk, affecting this submission. RTC is handled incorrectly, which may cause movies for games that use RTC to desync depending on what timezone they are played back in. A cursory look at the relevant code in BizHawk (MGBAHawk.cs) tells me that the issue most likely lies with the fact that the RTC code compares with DateTime(1970, 1, 1), which would return different results depending on the host system's timezone.

Sync note: due to a bug in the mGBA code in BizHawk regarding RTC configuration, the movie may desync depending on the timezone it is played back on. I verified that it synced with a system configured to timezone GMT-5 (US Eastern Time) while it desynced in Fortree Gym at my native GMT+1.

Barring the jump to fall down faster at 0:06, I have seen very little in this game that validates it as a speed record. The jump timings throughout the game are not that hard and can be done reasonably consistently in real time with some practice. Do the first jump in the game right and then clear the rest of it without missing a jump and you will have an RTA run that matches this time nearly exactly. I think it's too trivial to be worth a publication. It's a very obscure game as well, being only available on the GGJ site and having just a few playthrough videos with just around a hundred views each.
