I made a poll about this issue.

Coming from this thread, there's a discussion to think about how to refer to files with TAS work, which the site currently refers to as movie files. I've seen some trends developing in that thread about what to go for, but just for the sake of convenience I decided to put a poll here so we may get a clearer answer about what to go for. If there's enough of an agreement with what to call them, I do agree with changing how we refer to them on site pages. Could be a sizeable amount of work, since the term is referenced on a lot of site articles, and we also have to consider if and how we're going to change the wording on e.g. publication modules. (For instance, how the publication module currently refers to the submitted file as "[Emulator] Movie", and how we might want to change that too). But let's first see what kind of results we'll get in this thread.

The last standard Robot Master, Komuso Man, is down: Link to video .bakedgoods file Three final stages left now (Clock Men, Compas Man, R-Shadow). As usual, the hard parts of the stage were the miniboss and the stage boss (although some of the moth enemies in this stage were fairly annoyingly placed too). I tried several different weapon strategies with the miniboss, but it turned out that the good ol' Rock Buster (with three charged shots in between the uncharged ones) was still fastest in the end Barrier Wind saves the day again. Komuso Man's boss fight is one of the most ridiculously designed ones in any classic Mega Man game. He's only vulnerable at all when he stands in the corner of the stage while spawning clones, and is invincible at all other times. And it's not possible to jump over him or his clones, so I'm essentially forced to take damage a few times. EDIT: I found a more reliable strat with Barrier Wind on the Komuso Man miniboss (if you try to hit it dead center, it usually just bounces off, so you have to hit the outer edges for it to work), which combined with using Barrier Wind entirely from that point on (costing a few frames here and there) results in a 233-frame (00:03.88 seconds) gain. The above WIP files have been updated. (old encode for reference).

The pacifist run uses the JPN version, which saves about half a minute by skipping pre-level screens. The obsoleted run from 2004 does use the USA version though. TheMechanicalKoopa, you may want to compare your run to this one to see where you're losing time (besides what Invariel pointed out).

There are many Android and iOS emulators, including official development SDK ones, but they're mostly closed-source and don't have rerecording tools, frame advance, or any other useful tools for TASing. Therefore, there is not much to discuss about TASing them currently, unless you know of other emulators that have those tools or can have those tools added to them. And even if those existed, Pokémon Go is a server-based game, which makes it pretty much impossible to TAS.

FCEUX 2.2.3 has been released! The 2.2.3 release fixes a number of emulation bugs, features overclocking (for lag reduction) and Dendy mode, and adds support for a bunch of new ROM dumps (mostly unlicensed). Reverse engineering tools and Lua scripting have got some updates, new input devices are supported, and new palette files have been added. The SDL port has been fixed and updated as well. More details about the new release can be found at: http://www.fceux.com/web/pressrelease-2.2.3.html

There is no USA release of the PSX/Saturn version of this game. You'll have to go with the Japanese release for a 60fps version.

Have you tried running the game in BizHawk? I'm not feeling keen on accepting a run of a game with sound emulation issues when an emulator that doesn't have this issue is available.

Yet another WIP, with Dangan Man down now: Link to video User movie #32186484563848958 This marks the halfway point of the game. Four stages done, four left to go. The miniboss was a large pain. Its pattern is simple - it fires three slow homing shots, which can be destroyed, and when all three shots on are destroyed it will hop across the room (mostly invincible) and fire three more shots - but those shots would get in the way a lot, and I wouldn't be able to conveniently get rid of them because it screws up the pattern, or I wouldn't be able to touch them period if I was charging up a charge shot. I tried a lot of different strategies, but couldn't get any working ones with more than two charge shots, and having the miniboss hop once. Dangan Man himself was far more simple (although the first shot had to be very precise to do 4 hits). Barrier Wind makes bosses simple.

I think it certainly would be worth a try at least. We've gone through sync hell with previous Dolphin submissions before. Even if it probably won't sync for many people, it might just work on someone's system.

Violent video games we currently have published, such as Mortal Kombat, qualify as mature according to most rating standards. They're still fair game in most cases. These are distinct from adults-only video games, which we won't accept.

New WIP, with Konro Man defeated: Link to video User movie #31952988456987387 Barrier Wind (from Aircon Man) is really good, but it's also quite slow and there can only be one on screen at once, which makes it annoying to use in stages. (The few short pauses required sometimes are still faster than switching back and forth to another weapon, though). Konro Man is a typical example of a boss from this game, who like to spend a lot of time being invincible before you're finally allowed to hit them. At least he goes down fairly quickly when he does become vulnerable.

I found out today that this game was dumped a few days ago. To be precise, the dumped version is Zook Man ZX4, the Taiwanese release. So I decided to test it out for a few hours today. It's the third and final game of the Zook series by bootleg developers Vast Fame, and the only one to be on GBA instead of GBC. Compared to the previous two games, this game is a lot less subtle about its 'inspiration' of classic Mega Man games, as several bosses, enemies, and level graphics are clearly ripped or edited from official Mega Man games (including Mega Man 7, Mega Man & Bass, and Mega Man Zero). It also has a new engine, which doesn't allow the air-sliding/stalling trick that broke the previous two games apart in their TASes. In general I haven't found any game-shattering movement tricks yet, after a few hours of testing. I did find a trick to clip through two-block tall ceilings while wall jumping, which does speed up a few stages with vertical sections. The game has an intro stage, then 8 boss stages, followed by a final stage. The final stage consists just of a linear boss rush with short revisits to the 8 boss stages (with a lot more enemies). There is no true final boss - the game just ends after beating the last boss from the boss rush. Unlike the previous two games, only the 8 bosses need to be defeated to access the final stage. Collecting all upgrades is not needed. Since there are no canonical boss names that I know of, I identify them by the type of stage they reside in (from left to right, top to bottom): Factory, Sky, Volcano, Ocean, Space, Forest, Castle, Broadcast. There are four upgrades in this game:
  • Head Upgrade, in the Space Stage. This allows Zook to exit any stage at any time. Most likely useless.
  • Body Upgrade, in the Forest Stage. Doesn't seem to do anything. Also useless.
  • Leg Upgrade, in the Castle Stage. This allows Zook to dash, although only with double tap (left-left or right-right) input. Dash jumping doesn't work, but it still speeds Zook up by a fair amount on the ground. Probably high priority.
  • Arm Upgrade: I haven't actually been able to find this, although it's claimed to be in the Factory stage. Probably allows charging weapons to do more damage, so probably this will be very useful.
Some other notes:
  • For reference, there's an old playthrough of Rockman & Crystal on YouTube, although it is incomplete (missing the final stage and arm upgrade).
  • I haven't been able to spot any boss weaknesses so far. Maybe I need closer testing, but it seems like there are no boss weaknesses.
  • Since I don't have enough data about boss weaknesses yet, nor where the arm upgrade is or what it exactly does, I don't have a route yet.
  • Every hit in the game does 1 damage to Zook (out of a lifebar of 8), including spikes. The only instant kills are bottomless pits, or getting crushed on the left side of the screen in an autoscroller stage (Sky or Ocean stages)
  • In the final stage, the bosses/stages are met in this order: Factory, Sky, Volcano, Ocean, Space, Forest, Castle, Broadcast.
  • This game does not currently run in BizHawk (1.11.6) or VBA-rr. It only runs in mGBA builds from 2016-06-26 or later. Therefore, it cannot be TASed yet until the mGBA core in BizHawk is updated.
