Forum registration (and by extension site registration) is currently broken. The problem appears to be a bug in how phpBB2 handles session data.

A handful of people, including Stovent and CasualPokePlayer from staff, have been unbanned by Discord after appeals, so it does at least look like Discord is working towards unbanning people that had nothing to do with the JPN TAS server's illegal content. However, some appeals have been rejected or have not gone through, so it's still far from over.

It's clear we're not going to get a reasonable appeal here. Locking.

For context: The JPN TAS Discord server was entirely banned from Discord, for apparently hosting illegal loli content in private (role-locked) channels. Discord also appears to have gone the extra mile and banned everyone who was in said Discord server, even if they had not posted nor had any sort of access to said private channels. "A ton of TASVideos staff banned" is a bit of an exaggeration, by my count 4 or 5 (out of 23) TASVideos staff members on Discord are currently banned from the platform. I expect these bans to be reversed eventually, after appeals (hopefully) come through. Granted, it's still a messy situation. I can sort of understand why Discord went with the mass-nuke option, although it obviously is quite unfair to many innocent users who got banned, and they should have investigated the case more thoroughly before nuking everyone from the server. I hope it can be sorted out soon.

Another tag that needs addressing is pacifist. If it saves time to avoid enemies, I feel it is no longer a relevant tag. Otherwise huge amounts RPGs would get the tag. I feel it should be used only if it loses time, is neutral time save, or is a challenge recognized in-game like Undertale.
I agree - pacifist tag only makes sense if one of the following apply: • it is an explicitly recognized achievement in-game • it is a deliberate decision to avoid killing enemies, that results in a slower run-time • it is equal in time, but the player has to deliberately go out of the way to achieve it If being pacifist is the fastest option, then it's nothing special, and should not be labeled as such.

While I like the term "bootleg" for unauthorized modifications or franchise usage, it'd be nice to distinguish that from things like Camerica games: original games that just didn't get the official license. Do you think that'd make sense?
I think putting a difference based solely on copyrighted content can potentially get quite fuzzy, while at the same time I don't know if there is much of a benefit to distinguish between the two. Ultimately, they both qualify as games made in violation of civil law, one breaking it with the copyright holder, and the other breaking it with the console publisher. I don't feel like we need to subdivide everything to this level - splitting unofficial games into four or five categories already feels like it's a bit much.

If the levels are imported through external means, I see no practical difference between a custom level set and a hack (e.g. both Super Mario World and DOOM have editors based on someone reverse-engineering the level data format; there's no reason to call the former a "hack" and the latter a "custom level"). On the other hand, some games have internal level editors.
The thing with injecting levels in whole-ROM games like SMW is that it's a lot harder to prove that nothing besides level data was touched, and typically editors for games like that have options that inject game code changes of some sort anyway. When you only load in a level file format file like a Doom WAD, and the boundary for not touching any game-engine-related files is not crossed, then I don't think that is or can be considered a hack.

"Pirated" generally means "illegally copied", so that's probably not the word you're looking for.
Yeah, the words I meant to use were bootleg/unlicensed (meaning games made in violation of copyright law). Pirated indeed means something different, although it's often interchanged with the other terms.

Homebrew - games that were developed outside of the platform's official publisher's platform
This needs rewording for platforms that don't have an official publisher platform, e.g. C64 or DOS. And on these platforms, homebrew games need a standard for notability, because any high school kid can write his own game in the standard programming languages.
By the nature of those systems (as well as that of PC platforms in general, including Windows and Linux), it's not possible to have a definition for "unofficial game". There's a myriad of ways to distribute such games, and even some highly popular games don't go through any more of a formal process than just having a download link somewhere. There can of course be clear differences in quality between a professionally made studio product and something a high school kid can put on the internet, but I don't know anything that formally decides a difference between such games being called homebrew or not. In the current "unofficial games" list, the only games listed for such platforms are games that are also unlicensed, like DOS Mario & Luigi or Windows Syobon Action. Wikipedia also defines homebrew games as explicitly hobbyist games produced for proprietary hardware, and notes that developers of that nature for freely programmable systems like C64 are simply considered hobbyist, not homebrew.

This seems to be more restrictive than the current ruling in for prototypes, which allows them for Standard. I don't think putting more game choices under Moons is a good idea here.
Yeah, my mistake, I overlooked that some of them were already in standard. I didn't mean to make anything more restrictive.

Unofficial Games could use being split into hacks/modifications, custom levels, homebrew, and bootlegs/unlicensed. I don't know if this is the best way to split but we can discuss it.
I would split up Unofficial Games as follows: • Hacks - defined as custom (external) modifications of a game, involving modification of the main executable or ROM file by external tools. ◦ E.g.: Super Demo World (Super Mario World) • Custom level set - for games where level files can be imported (through internal or external means) while the executable or game code itself remains untouched. ◦ E.g.: Kama Sutra (Doom 2) • Prototype - for (unofficially released/leaked) prototype versions of games that either were officially released later or cancelled. ◦ E.g.: Wildwaters Extreme Kayak • Unlicensed games - games that were physically/commercially released bypassing the platform's official publisher's platform or supervision (if there is one). This includes bootleg/pirated games. ◦ E.g.: Zook Hero Z • Homebrew - games that were developed outside of the platform's official publisher's platform, but were either fully or predominantly released online in ROM format, instead of being released commercially. Could also be merged with Unlicensed. ◦ E.g.: Princess Rescue Hacks and custom level sets would need to qualify for Moons to be eligible for publication. Prototypes would need to meaningfully distinguish themselves from their released version (if there is one) and qualify for Moons. Unlicensed and homebrew games can be published as standard, but the game might need to meet some standards for notability.

Following some great work on pushing forward major site changes (including a lot of grunt work), and also doing a great job communicating these and more site developments to the broader public in news posts, on Discord and social media - Memory has now been promoted to Admin Assistant. This is more representative of her standing and responsibilities in terms of staff role. Congratulations, Memory!

I don't think I can overstate how much this is actually needed for the longevity of the site. From personal experience (and that of various others over the years), the old site is prohibitively difficult to develop for, and it's stood in the way of many, many quality of life changes and other important feature updates that we have been wanting to do. The new site codebase still has some ways to go, but it is way easier to work with (also from personal experience, and of others), and it is definitely the way forward.

3. This user was blocked from submitting to begin with because they were stealing other people's works, which is not a practice I would want to encourage in any way.

I'm going to comment here that while "submit it" is indeed the most direct way to gather significant amounts of feedback, it needs to be realized that for such a movie, making it to publication is still very much an uphill task. Playarounds very rarely get obsoleted, nor do they get published together if they share the same goal. Obsoleting a playaround requires having a very definite mark of improvement over the previous movie in terms of creativity (or technicality in some cases). In this particular case, the submission would be weighed against a TAS with a Star, a Recommended for Newcomers flag, Innovative and Funny TAS awards, which is still considered a highly rated, great creative piece of work. That is a very high bar to be measured against, and if you want to contest against it, you need to be sure that you bring a peak product of creativity to the table. And honestly, as soon as I saw this video posted here, I noticed that it was not up to par (in terms of creativity and humor). But it was submitted anyway, and (quite predictably, tbh) the thread became a bit of a mess. I would have recommended against submitting it, but alas, I was too late. I guess the bottom line is: trying to get a playaround published (either alongside or obsoleting an existing one of the same category) is really hard. In this case, it might even be practically impossible. The published TAS has a few flaws of jokes that haven't aged well, but coming up with something better is still an enormously difficult task.

Voting no. With the published TAS, the given answers follow clear themes - they try to fit the patterns of the questions most of the time, to the point where it becomes a meta-joke when they don't, and otherwise provided creative, humorous jokes in their own right. You barely even realize that the answers are constrained to whatever the text parser reads as a valid answer. This TAS, by comparison, doesn't provide that level of humor. Half of the answers are crude jokes, and the other half are very obviously strained attempts at coming up with something the text parser reads as correct. Or they're both. Forgoing giving one of the answers in round 3 was also a bad choice. It breaks the flow, did not take the opportunity to write anything funny even when you have almost full creative freedom, wastes a lot of time, and the extra round doesn't offer much of anything new. In the end, I don't think it has the entertainment value to even stand on its own. But especially compared to the published TAS, considered one of the most creative and entertaining playaround movies on the site even after more than a decade, there just is no positive quality to this run to merit publication over or alongside it.

Suggesting [4505] GC Super Smash Bros. Melee "Target Test" by PracticalTAS, Mario 64 Master, ajp_anton & tauKhan in 06:55.73 to take the star from [3493] N64 Super Smash Bros. "Break the Targets & Board the Platforms" by Isotarge & Mittenz in 08:05.92. Some reasons why I think this is a good idea: - N64 Super Smash Bros. already has 2 stars out of 3 publications, Melee currently has 0 out of 4 - Melee is a significantly more popular game - More than twice as many characters (for greater variety) - Faster gameplay with more movement tricks - Elements of luck manipulation and glitch setups that aren't in the N64 game. Melee's TAS shenanigans include things like spamming random character select, and even briefly going to a different game mode to set up a glitch. This makes it more than just a compilation of ILs - some significant hurdles had to be passed just to make this movie technically possible to put together. I think it's clearly worthy of having a Star.

Thanks for investigating. I wouldn't mind if this movie got (retroactively) obsoleted. It doesn't add anything new compared to the other publication which came later. Regardless of whether or not it's actually a saving glitch, an unlicensed mapper issue, or just an extra dodgy bootleg release of a bootleg game, it doesn't do anything special either way.

The site throws a 403 Forbidden error when an URL is passed with a subpage path which is more than 256 characters long. This can happen when opening a list of all movies from either the homepage or forum profile page of an user with a lot of coauthored publications, e.g. Alyosha or EZGames69. For example, trying to load all movies from Alyosha generates this URL, which returns a 403 error when trying to open: http://tasvideos.org/Movies-774up-778up-782up-787up-798up-807up-808up-816up-818up-821up-826up-832up-833up-838up-839up-848up-880up-885up-901up-904up-907up-914up-925up-929up-1002up-1025up-1026up-1030up-1040up-1043up-1067up-1070up-1081up-1082up-1083up-1191up-1196up-1197up-1199up-1218up-1224up-1250up-1252up-1265up-1306up-1311up-Obs.html

The phpBB2 version we currently use is severely outdated, but it has some customized auto-spam detections (ask Nach about details) and a custom registration captcha that more-or-less seems to do its job well enough. Currently, we still get some spam posts/registrations a handful times per year, but it's very manageable. If you're using a stock phpBB version (ideally something from within the past decade) and you're having major spam issues, then you should probably check their customer support or community help forums.

The second iteration of TASGiving is due to be held from Friday, November 26th through Sunday, November 28th. TASGiving is a TAS-focused charity marathon that benefits NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The first TASGiving raised over $10,000 for NAMI, and this year we hope to achieve a similar success, or even better. Submissions are currently open, and will be running until September 15th. More information is available here.

This sounds like an issue that may happen with DeSmuME versions 0.9.10 or 0.9.11, which have known issues with save file management (see this topic for more info). Use DeSmuME 0.9.9 instead.

Watched the livestream reveal, as well as various of the TAS progression streams. Fun run, lots of explosions. Great improvement. Voting yes.

Verified sync of this movie, same way as the previous submission. I think it's easy to underestimate for the average viewer just how much of a technical achievement it is to collect these records in one movie, given how insane the amount of luck-manipulation needed for some of them is. Up until recently, it was considered practically impossible just to find a suitable RNG seed for Peach's one-in-100-million odds, never mind adding the other luck-heavy stages on top of it. One to remember for the Lucky TAS awards. That being said, it is funny to see just how contrived the setups sometimes get. Even entering Adventure Mode partway through the run is a necessary step to get the lowest times. And the BTT runs themselves are, of course, as immaculate as you can expect them to be well over a decade of grinding out TASes by several people. Yes vote.

As a fun incentive towards winning the contest, I can announce there will be an extra prize: the winners of this DTC may each submit one emote to be added to the Discord server. Terms/conditions: * One emote submission (image and emote name) is allowed for each member of the winning team. This is not transferable. * Your emote submission must be sent in a DM to me on Discord. * Emote submissions are open for one month after the end of the contest and winner announcement. Afterwards, I won't take any more submissions. * Emote submissions must follow TOS and server rules (no obscene material, etc). I reserve the right to reject emote submissions based on these rules. * Emote submissions cannot be animated. * The emotes will stay on the Discord for at least a full year, after which I reserve the right to remove them for any reason (in case I ever need to make space, etc.) I hope this adds a fun extra incentive for the teams :)
