Or just leaving a game running for 10 minutes or so, also works reasonably well.

WIP 10: Fire Stage - Body Arm collection and Fire Boss are both in this WIP. Yes, I'm doing the same stage twice in succession in this route. Link to video User movie #28487922472747685 These were the last two "robot master" stages, so now just the six stages of Dr. Mitt's Fortress are left. I'm currently not sure if I'll post another WIP before I finish it. Maybe I'll do one after the third Fortress stage, maybe not.

For a few years or so by now, I had been hoping to see a true arcade SF2 playaround that would show off much more than the two SNES runs do. I had a take on a glitchy Arcade The World Warrior playaround once, with the intention to obsolete those two runs, but it never really got off the ground. I've yet to watch this run, but I do expect it to be good, and would certainly consider obsoleting the SNES playarounds with this run if it is sufficiently good enough. Anyone else have opinions on this?

This is a very fun and creative idea! I really liked it. Took me a few tries to get the victory ending (first try I got the sudden death one). It really makes you hooked into the TAS match, rooting for the Fox to take the advantage with every choice you make. Only thing that bothered me a bit was how random the results would be after the particular decision you've made. As in, you can take one of two choices, and either result will be basically fine, it's just the rest of the TAS (until the next split) is basically a blind gamble with who gets the advantage afterwards. Also, the winning ending was slightly anti-climactic - it was a good TAS, but I kept expecting there would be some last-hit decision to make or break it all. The 30 seconds of TAS game before the win was played well, but it was just not quite as satisfying as I expected it to be.

Very interesting read, it provides an interesting insight in the behind-the-scenes of the whole TASBlock and stuff. I especially like how much it highlights how clutch the whole setup was, with the TASBot input not being finalized until minutes before the presentation. It gives a good insight on just how frantic the whole process must have been.

Warp, if your issue lies with site policy in general (and not with only this specific run), please take your discussion to a separate topic. Discussing it in a topic like this is only bound to derail it.

This would be a perfect fit for the long-proposed "demo" category. Which doesn't exist. As it is, it doesn't really fit into any category. The major reason is that it doesn't complete the game. Even "playarounds" complete the game. It's one of the fundamental rules. Sure, it shows an "the end" screen, but that's not completing the game. If we start accepting anything that's "entertaining", then we'll have to start accepting runs that only go half-way through the game, or just demonstrate a funny glitch and that's it. That would be perfect for the "demo" category (if they have enough merit for publication), but nowhere else. Create that category, and you get ten thumbs up from me. Otherwise, no.

Most casual viewers have never seen before at least 90% of the games being speedrun. To them it probably makes no difference.
The vast majority of games for GDQ events are selected such that either:
  • The game or franchise is well enough known that the majority of viewers will have at least a passing familiarity with it (Zelda, Pokémon, GTA, etc., and well known platforming franchises like Mario, Metroid, Mega Man)
  • The game is a good watch even for people who haven't seen the game before. With many genres e.g. racing games, platform games or other action games, it is almost always easy to tell what's going on even if you haven't seen the game before, or at least be impressed by some of the feats or tricks you are seeing.
This game was neither. Keep in mind that literally nobody except the TASers and the two RTA runners had even seen the game before. That's an audience of a few dozen people at best who could understand it, while the other 160k of Twitch viewers and GDQ audience has no idea what's going on.

I'll be honest, this basically sums up my feelings as well. The game choice was underwhelming from a TASing perspective, and it was more frustrating than rewarding to run. The "RTA-friendly" RNG really killed it. And using a basically predefined route with pre-documented glitches was not at all rewarding. The end result TAS also appeared underwhelming, as it did literally nothing the RTA didn't do except be a few seconds faster.

I disagree, I did find a few of these legitimately comical. THUG2 stood out for me especially. I do agree the field isn't that strong this year though. There have been very few playarounds, and nothing on the same level as, say, Scribblenauts a few years back, or a UMK3 playaround the year before that.

My votes go to: [3037] PSX Warcraft II: The Dark Saga "Orc Expansion" by Flip in 1:10:27.57 - every year (for the past three years) we've got one of these, and they keep getting better every time. Once again, it's a great showcase of TAS concepts applied to strategy games, extensive micromanagement, manipulation, and plenty strategies that defy all sense of risk and defy common sense but always do pay off in the end. It's always a joy to watch. [3035] PSX Star Trek: Invasion by adelikat in 38:00.16 is a very unique and technical run, bringing true free-range 3D TASing to the platform. Combine it with a good amount of action and explosions, and we have another fine run.

dwangoAC, as adelikat said, embodies the spirit of the Exotic TASer awards. Few others even come close to being as dedicated to creating TASes for the most obscure platforms and barely TASable emulators. Just look at the list of platforms he has submitted runs for this year - Arcade, ColecoVision, WonderSwan, Atari Lynx, and the TI-83 calculator. Few have even run one or two of those, never mind all of them.

If I hadn't completely overlooked who were and weren't nominated for this category, I'd have nominated Tremane/SmartFrame for his excellent takes on Mega Man IV and Mega Man II, and being all-around awesome in general. That's not to take away anything from the current nominees, who each have made good runs of their own. That said, mugg certainly wins out here.

I voted for adelikat and Flip. Flip obviously deserves credit for his dedication to the games he runs, Warcraft II in particular. Warcraft II had yet another fine entry this year, and then there's also MDK. adelikat provided us a high quality run, which is also the epitome of 3D TASing - free form 3D movement in all three axes, which combined with the action packed missions made the TAS a real treat to watch. For me, it's not just about the TAS itself, but also about the way adelikat brought full 3D TASing to a 3D platform. It's really something quite unique.

You can't shoot walls in the NES games. Bullets colliding with walls was only introduced to Mega Man games in the PSX era, and shooting walls for luck manipulation only works in the Inti Creates games (Mega Man Zero/ZX series) afaik.
