By request of some people, I wrote a set of lua scripts to record the top 10 submissions into ghost files and play them back in order to generate a "ghosts"/"horse race" encode. (like I also did for DTC5/Metal Force). Here it is: Link to video

I haven't read most of this topic yet, so sorry if some things were already mentioned. I had some talks with Nach a few months back about improving the rating system to be easier. The idea was to replace the ratings link/page with a simple form on the publication module itself with text input and/or a slider to input the entertainment and tech ratings. Combined with a confirm button, that'd bring the number of clicks needed to put in any rating down to 3 (or 2 if you only fill in one rating) and no need to go to different pages. We never got around to doing it because of lack of coding manpower, and lack of people who know enough site code/ratings code/publication module code to dare touch it or do anything with it. (In other words, we'd probably need Nach to get on it).

Instead of flying on the plate and playing this room normally, it is skipped by hovering to the right side of the room. The game would empty your jetpack fuel automatically, but you can use an ingame code to refill it on the pause screen and then hover for 1 frame before it is emptied again. (Note: When I first played picked up this game, I considered the ingame codes like cheat codes and neglected to use them. But they can also be considered as part of the gameplay since using them detracts 10 points from the score (at the bottom of the screen) and they don't really cause anything so special to happen other than changing weapons and refilling health or fuel.)
To address this usage of these ingame codes/cheat codes: The movie rules state that cheats, debugging codes etc. are not allowed (obviously). However, we need to define whether these codes count as cheats or not. They do have the appearance of cheat codes - penalizing the user's score or achievements is nothing new for cheat codes. However, we may find an answer as to whether it really counts elsewhere. From the movie rules: "Note that, if the button sequence is mentioned in the manual as a normal means of playing, such as level restart shortcuts in the Legend of Zelda or Metroid, it is usually allowed." As such, let's bring out the game manual:
Manual wrote:
Weapons Daffy will receive points for defeating enemies. He can use these points to change weapons and revive health. To do this, press Start to pause the game. To change weapons, it takes 10 points. Once the game is paused, press Up twice for a Laser gun; press Down twice for a Big Bullet gun; press Left twice for a Bouncing gun; and press Right twice for a Rapid Fire gun. Hold the Start button, then press Select to default to your original weapon. It costs 10 points to revive health. To do this, pause the game and press B.
The manual refers to the ingame codes as though they are a normal means of playing. As such, I'll allow them.

This is what we've been doing. The foundation of the current submission is actually a whole new optimized run on BizHawk by adelikat, and we're adding more improvements as we find them as well.

The main page has already been un-static for a few days now (since a few hours after SGDQ ended), and the static version had been updated a few days into SGDQ (well before the TAS block). I suppose you don't see this because of your browser caching. Try reloading the front page with Shift+F5. Clicking "More..." at the movie list on the front page brings you to this page with all new publications and some other updates.

I don't think it belongs to this publication. The run that was submitted to TASVideos and published is different from the DTC5 submissions (which are in the stage comparison encodes). There's a thread link to the DTC5 topic, which holds the stage comparison encodes in the first post, which I think is enough.

About the "slow TASer" part in the quote, I think I can confirm it, since I was very low on time :P But that was part of the fun, hearing some Super Metroid music when I still had multiple rooms to do... That was quite intense! Luckily, the last parts of the game, where I was completely rushing, were not the most complex rooms.
This was, for me, the best part of the competition as well. I was also a relatively slow TASer (because my mentality was not want to give up any frames just to be quick in real time; I didn't just want to record a time, I wanted to record a good time), so I was falling behind as I came into the final sections of the game. Then the Super Metroid music started playing on the stream, and there was no more appropriate soundtrack than that to generate an incredibly tense atmosphere as I was TASing the final area as quickly as I could (still without sacrificing any frames) before the Super Metroid race would start. I ended with a couple of minutes to spare (fortunately the last section was indeed reasonably easy and quick to do), but that final race against the clock was one of the most tense things I've experienced in quite some time.

This game mode controls like VVVVVV - you can't simply "jump" down, you can only invert gravity, and can only do so while on the ground. In cases where it was possible to walk on the opposite floor/ceiling for the same momentum effect, I did that wherever possible. EDIT: As MUGG said, such a setup also takes time, so sometimes simply falling down was faster.

From the movie rules:
Use an official emulator version Every officially supported TAS emulator has a repository to host official releases obtainable as a package (like binaries). Using these releases is supported by TASVideos. Using interim builds compiled from SVN source is not officially supported. Always make sure your movie syncs on the official releases, use interim builds on your own risk. If it syncs on some interim build , but doesn't sync on any official release, it will be rejected. Note that some emulators and games still require interims (development builds) to work properly (like Dolphin). Use such only if you know what you are doing. For such rare cases exceptions can be made if using interims is unavoidable TAS-wise. Otherwise stick to official releases.
So yeah, it'll have to sync on an official release version.

Yeah, the TAS block this time around wasn't as wow-ing as the AGDQ 2014 and AGDQ 2015. Of course, it's hard to top things like SMW Pong/Snake and Pokémon Plays Twitch, but to the average short-attention span viewer of twitch chat or reddit, an explanation/introduction of TASing around in Mega Man is just boring in comparison. Live TASing is just not really an entertaining watch if you're not involved into it, which the average viewer was not. I think the problem was that the viewers were expecting more of the past few TAS Blocks, which were mainly console verification and specially-made entertainment runs for that, whereas this TAS block was really focused on TASing itself and showcasing actual tool-assisted speedruns (and one superplay). I think the previous TAS Blocks gave a bit of a wrong impression to the average viewers as to what typical TASing really is like. Instead of console verification, and specially made entertainment runs, it consisted of an introduction to TASing and playing back videos of published movies. It didn't contain something groundbreaking like the past two TAS Blocks (even though AGDQ 2015 was just half a year ago, people easily forget that), so it did not really live up to a lot of viewers' (unrealistic) expectations. People were just expecting too much, and expected too much something like the AGDQ TAS blocks. The presentation itself was good, I thought. Everyone did their part in the TAS Block well. The TASing introduction looked like a good introduction as to what the main essence of TASing is, and the run commentaries were good. The TAS block itself was executed well. Regarding the TAS Race results, I'm aware that it involved a lot of last-ditch efforts to make the process work at all, and insufficient testing/too quick conclusions were the result of that. I'm not really blaming you or anyone else, but it was a bit disappointing not to see my (likely winning) result on the GDQ stream regardless. (Also, I still really want to see the final results). Other than that, as you noted, the TAS Race has been a great success, and was really successful in attracting new members to the community. No matter how "bad" or boring the TAS Block may have been reviewed on reddit or twitch chat, it did its job well. All in all, I think you shouldn't let the negative feedback upset you too much - reddit and especially twitch chat are known for being harsh communities at times. I can see a bit where they are coming from, but don't let their critique take away from the fact that the TAS Block has been overall a success, and the TAS Race especially has been a big success. Be proud of that.

From the judging comments on MrWint's currently published run:
Mothrayas wrote:
While there may be an improvement incoming that uses a glitched warp, it will have to be seen when that is submitted whether that would obsolete this run, or whether this run would remain as "no warp glitch", like primo's current run is now.
So the question will arise now: do we keep the previous publication as a "no warp glitch", or should it be obsoleted by this run (or an improved version of this run)?

Since it's already collaborative, won't it be good to co-author kaizoman? For competitions and final movies they end up with, we use to co-author anyone without whom it wouldn't be as fast.
My position on coauthorship for runs like these is to coauthor only all players who have had input in the run. I don't think kaizoman is the only one who used this strat either (he just had a conveniently accessible video since the SGDQ stream played it back), should I credit everyone in the TAS race who went through this room in that particular way? Should I credit Dragonfangs too since he actually told us about the room strat? Should I credit SGDQ and dwangoAC too for showcasing kaizoman's run on the stream? I don't know, there's just too much of a slippery slope here. This v3 run probably would in fact probably have been a solo adelikat run had it not been for the negazone room improvement, even though the v2 run by me and Samsara was heavily used as a reference point. I'm in fact only credited for my negazone room input (and lag clowns room input, and a couple other rooms) and Samsara for resyncing the rest. So yeah, I maintain to only coauthor the players who have had input in the run. You could arguably create a very long author list otherwise.

The problem appeared to be with the .fm2 autojudger being broken, which meant practically only BizHawk movies were counted at first.

There is no published run of this game, so a branch name is not strictly necessary. It could go without.

A normal TAS is like a grand master in an untimed chess match playing perfectly. A speed TAS is like the same grand master playing speed chess slightly less perfectly. At the end of the SGDQ 2015 TASBot block on Saturday Aug. 1 an NES game and a ~4 hour time limit will be announced during which participants will be able to submit a BizHawk or FCEUX movie file, with the winning submission played back directly following Super Metroid. More details can be found in the competition announcement.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

The main page is currently static due to high traffic from SGDQ viewers. The front page is just an old version from earlier in the year. There are news announcements for 1.11.0 and 1.11.1 as usual, they're just not visible right now.
