Previous submissions: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1533 http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1506 http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1491 >you used gens 9c, I couldnt find a 9c version, just test9a. 9a is the latest unofficial release. 9c is still in progress, but you can PM Jyzero (the guy who's coding it, see Gens forum) and he will send you the work in progress. It has a frame advance feature which is wonderful. >Not only that I dont really know how to use the record functions too well, like re-record and all that. I've never really made a speed run before. Using emulator tools: http://tasvideos.org/UsingEmulatorTools.html Also, be sure you read the rules, guidelines, common tricks, and all and any info you can find on the game online: http://tasvideos.org/Rules.html http://tasvideos.org/Guidelines.html http://tasvideos.org/CommonTricks.html >But 1 thing that bugs me is if you mess up on one part, do you have to redo the whole thing? I just dont know enough about recording in general. If you mess up on one part and redo it, you will lose everything made after that part. For example if you record levels 1 2 and 3 and find a mistake in the middle of level 2, you will lose the second half of 2 and all of 3. Last but not least, make a lot of backups of your movie file as you make it. It's easy to accidentally press the wrong button, load an early savestate and erase everything made after that. Let us know if you need any more help, but check the FAQ first and use the search function on the forum to see if anyone already asked. Good luck.

Gah. Well, I guess there is some lesson to learn from this. And the old Gnome libraries aren't available anymore I suppose. If I understood the problem correctly that would help. Noone around who has them?

Why can't you use the old version for encoding movies until this problem is fixed? Will Phil still be able to encode Genesis movies?

I can give some comments on some of the comments then... we tried some of it in previous submissions. Reading trough the discussions is probably a good idea, there are all somewhere in this forum. >For the First Level, Nightcrawler can get the job done faster instead of wolverine. True, but it is not possible to start with Nightcrawler without dying. The game starts automatically without giving you a chance to select a character. Usually you always start with Beast, but by changing the type of controller you can manipulate it to get Wolverine, but that's it. That's still a big improvement over Beast though. >Pyramid Level (The level with the boss that throws rocks): It is possible to skip level with nightcrawler. But if said and done, I still dont know if you would gain any time due to the fact that the main boss will require alot of hits with nightcrawler (I could be wrong). And I have actually skipped a full floor before, so it is possible but very hard. Slashstardash said he tried this and that Nighcrawlers speed didn't make up for it on the boss. But then I don't know if he knew you could skip floors with him. >apocalypse (Spelling?) Level: I understand that you hit those brown balls on purpose for entertainment purposes. Thats fine as long as you have ATLEAST one yellow bar on your health meter when apocalypse shows his face. Becauase when you have a yellow bar, your super-move is alot stronger. You killed him in 36 hits, when you could have killed him in 11 or 12 hits (I dont know the exact number). It is actually not for entertainment. If you don't destroy the balls, they circle around the center a few times, wasting a lot of time. Wether or not this makes up for the time lost by having weaker attacks later I don't know, it is definitely something worth testing. "The Transformer boss" - I'm having a mind blank, which boss is this again? The one that explodes directly and then turns into some weird tank? Thanks for all the feedback anyway, I'm sure Mr. Slash will appreciate it. And it's good that I'm not the only one whining about his videos. :)

>BLW2 done, 3 frames faster than you. I'm impressed you did so well without frame advance, seriously...I can't live without it anymore! This whole thing will probably end with me doing the first few levels with frame advance over again, just to gain those extra 3 frames per level. :P But that will have to wait until I get a new computer, because I am NOT carrying that thing back and forward from campus anymore just to do this. Tell me if you want more tips and stuff. I'll be glad to help you.

Hm, that sounds strange. I've actually never had any descynchs with this game, it runs like a clock. I thought I did the intro as fast as possible, at least I didn't willfully delay it. Are you running the same version as me? That is (U) on Gens 9c? You don't have to make a lot of backups but it's a good idea. I make backups constantly, every time I play back to see how things look. Beginning of BLW2, just hit the hole straight on, there are a few pixels of leeway. There shouldn't be any need to slow down, just jump at the right frame and hold the jump button for the correct number of frames. I guess it's just a matter of time before you start beating my times. Hmpf. Good luck in any case.

I played around some with this too. It's really irritating how everything on the ground cannot be hit until it's halfway across the screen. Makes it impossible to destroy everything in most levels probably. Like those arrow things which take a lot of shots to destroy. I'll check it as soon as possible, which might not be very soon, but anyway.

Depending on where you live, today or tomorrow is the main Christmas celebration day when we eat a lot of food, give each other presents, and remember how they crucified Santa Clause. I just thought I'd wish everyone happy holidays! Hope you have a good time.

>The first time(and only time I remember) I noticed this is was the first level, where the bumpers are in a U shape. I was wondering if hitting the most upper left bumper from the right, and using the velocity to then hit one of the bottom bumpers to bounce back up before you reach the other wall. I haven't actually tested but it sounds like it would be slower. As far as I know, the bumpers don't give any extra speed horizontally, only vertically, so you would lose time turning around and gaining speed in the opposite direction without any gain. One place I tried was Diamond Edge (ice level where you go zig-zag downwards) - at one of the turns there are rubber blocks in the wall, but it's faster to just turn around instead of bouncing into them.

Wow, nice map there nifboy. I was wondering where you went, but now I know I guess. I'll doublecheck it when I get back to where my map is. One idea might be to number all the elsewheres, that might make it a little easier talking about. EDIT: Nifboy, can I stick that map in somewhere in the Kid Chameleon Tricks page or some related page? I think it would be a very worthy addition. You'll get credit of course. Josh wrote: >Now is where things get interesting...is it longer to do Forced Entry + Cliffs of Illusion, or Valley of Life + Black Pit (or VoL + Elsewhere 11 + VoL + BP if that's cool)? Anyway, both these paths lead to Lion's Den, so going on from there: Depends on how you mean longer... FE + CoE are longer timewise than VoL + BP (around 40 seconds) but obviously the same number of levels. But if you're taking the longest path (most number of levels), does it mean that you should do the longest levels as well?

Just giving my thumbs up for the donut2 video. I seem to remember that you went invincible after defeating a boss, perhaps you could drop down into the lava and stand there during the score counting? My memory might be failing me but it's easy to check once you get the chance.

>Bah. You might just be correct on this one. :( Darn it. Checked this again. There are good reasons for hitting everything the way it is in level 2, but the last stone tank in level 3 might be able to hit a few frames earlier. Because of computer suckage I am unable to test this at the moment. Anyone who feels like it, be my guest. I also checked Bagel Bros again, and everything appears to be in order... with sword only it's not possible to keep the boss constantly "white", this is only possible by rapid bouncing near the ceiling and landing glitch.

@Blechy >Sometimes I felt like you didn't jump on a monster as soon as you could, to get a boost earlier. This first became obvious to me at the end of the 2nd(or maybe 3rd) level, where you jump on the last monster towards the center of him- it may just be that the hitboxes are irregular. Bah. You might just be correct on this one. :( Darn it. >There were a few times I wondered if you could have used the bouncing squares to your advantage, by hitting them from the side to get a boost. I tried this at all places I could think of, but I only found one place where it was actually faster - the beginning of Blizzard Mountain, the ice-level where I switch from Surfer to Fly. If you could give me a specific situation maybe I could explain better. >You didn't seem to hit the first bagel brother as soon as possible, actually passing through him before beginning to strike him. This could have just been due to the wacky needs of the sword, though. Yep - it's not possible to strike in the air usually (you do the destroy-blocks-below move showed earlier in the vid), you must be standing to start a strike. If the enemy is close to the ground you can use the jump-sword bug, but the first head is too high. >Also, it seemed that while sometimes they remained white, showing that they were always taking damage, they often flickered brown as well. Hm, I'll have to check this thoroughly again before I can say anything for certain. On the lowest head, you cannot strike all the time in the beginning because he moves too fast. You need some running frames to not lose too much speed so he'll hit you. Is it this you're thinking of? After that I use the jump-cancel bug to hit him more rapidly than I usually can. >You said you had to always get the no-hit bonuses early on for one of the warps, but I think you got a few later on, as well. Yep, but it's inavoidable. I don't want lose my helmet (takes time and I need the powers it grants), and there is usually no way to refill it. I tried to always lose the maximum amount of hitpoints possible and spread them out so I get no-hit bonus on as few levels as possible. (Except for the one place noted in Bad Points). >And lastly, personally I would prefer that the movie be ended as early as possible, before you(as the fly) are even stuck in the 1-square hole. But as noted, this would be debatable. Not possible. You need to move to where the flag is after defeating the boss, otherwise you'll just bounce up and down until time runs out. It's possible to end input earlier if the small heads are in a better position (See Nifboy's latest short submission), but I was unable to get the random for this. >Were there any suits that we never got to see? I played this game a lot awhile ago, but can't remember much of it. Yep, three of them: Maniaxe - hockey mask, throws axes Juggernaut - tank, shoots skulls EyeClops - green guy with visor, reveals hidden blocks Maniaxe has a bug akin to the Samurai to land repeatedly and throw lots and lots of axes, but wasn't around when I needed that (i.e Bagel Bros). The others aren't of much use in a time attack, what I know at least. Thank you for all the feedback! I love it. And thanks everyone who voted yes so far. (When will the mysterious no-vote return? Don't miss the next episode of "NESVideos voting mystery".)

@Bag of Magic Food Yes, a lot like that. There are four bosses around which the levels typically converge to a bottleneck (so you always have to play them) and then diverge again, but there are ways to skip 1, 2 or 3 bosses. @Highness No. Some levels exclude other levels (for example Hills of Illusion can never be in the same path as Valley of Life). It's possible to make very bad path choices and play a large number of levels though. Which you usually end up doing the first few times you play this game, since the "bad" exits from levels are usually obvious and easy to find. >:( Evil game designers.

Traditional way here. I'm going back to Sweden for two weeks to meet my family and relatives. That will be nice, minus the 10 hour flight.

>Maybe some good programmer here can create a plugin which actually displays the keypresses during the video?? I think there already is one for NES. Bisqwit used it for an earlier version of the movie for Friday 13th. Something to check into perhaps. Another thing I've though of is saving which frame is being reloaded and save it to a file and have some sort of moving diagram (think task manager) of how difficult a passage is, judging from how many times the frame was loaded.

Found the inverted fugue if anyone's interested... Fuga (Allegro) in C minor, Köchel nr. 546. http://vspickelen.port5.com/Mozartfiles/Mozhard.htm It's midi converted to mp3, so it sounds kind of crap. *SPOILER* (if you want to find the inverted theme yourself) The inverted theme is first heard at 1:20 (I think... it's very, very nested), and the inverted and original theme plays at the same time at 2:47.

>I once heard, that one of the great composers had once composed a symphony that could be played holding the notebook in either way: normally or upside down. Both had a melody that made sense. Mozart. Actually it's better than that - you sit/stand two people on opposite sides of a table playing from the same sheet, one from the beginning to end, the other from end to beginning with all notes upside down - and the two melodies forms a duet which actually makes sense. Mozart also made a fugue (His only one in minor scale? I'm not sure) where the theme returns flipped upside down in the middle. Listen and see if you can make it out.

>Josh, a warpless Kid Chameleon is a crazy undertaking, I think it has somewhere in the neighborhood of 250 levels. It depends on what you mean by warpless: it's possible to do it without taking any of the big warps, such as directly to final boss or skipping the first half of the game (which my submission does), but it's not possible to do it without the teleporters - some levels just don't have flags. Some ordinary teleporters skips ahead several levels - do they count as warps? According to the FAQ at GameFAQs, the game has 104 levels, but you'll never see all of them in one run. Nifboy did 51 levels in his long submission (http://tasvideos.org/queue.cgi?id=19). It's possible to do more levels (mostly Elsewheres, but some "real" levels too) by taking less flags and more teleporters. Sometimes a teleport will take you back one or two levels; indeed some levels are only accessible this way. I guess the problem is that there isn't any real main path (i.e 1st, 2nd, 3rd... final level) - just some shorter ones and some longer ones.

1 & 3) Ryoukai. 2) The weird thing is that some of the diffs work, color and jumbling and all. I guess I'll have to live with it. Thanks for listening.
