It heavilly depends on what is the goal of your run. For example, if the goal is making a TASvideos submission, I guess, the hack should be in released state. It’s not a good idea to submit runs of beta/preview versions, because there is a huge possibility that your run will desync with a newer version and so will be «naturally» outdated. It’s also obvious that it’s not a good idea to submit hacks having ugly look. Not all romhackers are good at level design and other visual stuff. A good example of a poorly designed hack is this… There are also some hacks that allow you to cause horizontal underflow very early, in the very beginning of every single level (especially if they add some move allowing you to take a boost over 4096 sp/f). Obviously, the viewers will not enjoy a run which consists mainly from score countdowns. Also some hacks seem to be not ideally designed, but feature something extraordinary, something unique that cannot be found in original games. Someone may really enjoy them. Never played this and cannot say how optimized it was, but the video was not really enjoyable to watch. However, I would still give it a «yes» vote for looking really fast, but it’s a weak yes vote, sorry.

Wow, I’ve just found this. Mike89 and wersterlobe playing S3K RTS :) Link to video It’s amazing. You guys (and also fuzzerd, TeeNTee314 and other realtime speedrunners) do a lot more crazy things than we, TASers… I can’t imagine how you do all those stuff in real time. (upd) and this one is great too, I never played that game, but I love it’s TAS by sparky. So amazing to see TASing tricks done in real time :) shooting to music at ~35:30 reminds me of the TAS :)

I got a dumb question. I’d like to use gd library to render some nice images from my scripts. The Gens Lua documentation says that it’s possible, but the steps described there do not help. What should I do to make gd functions available in my Gens Lua scripts?

This is way harder than, for example, to locate life or X-speed counter. Boolean flags (yes-no) are usually stored in memory as separate bits, which makes them unsearchable with the „RAM Search” function. So, the only way to make it is to analyse the game’s code (which is beyond my abilities), or checking some known bytes (like $FFB022 mentioned by marzojr on the previous page) for presense of such bit (and proving, at least by many successful tests, that it actually shows ducking status, and not something else). (upd) by adding a bunch of random memory watches around the mentioned address, I’ve found byte $FFB01D, which looks promising. I will check it deeper later.

Hmm, May the weird behavior of your Sega (sometimes syncing, sometimes not) be related with instability of processing frequency of the real Genesis console? I think, because of that some lag frame may appear/disappear, and it may depend on such factors as power voltage stability (controlled by an 7805 IC) and temperature stability?..

Hmm, I doubt (you have to fall from quite big height), but even if possible, the boss is higher, so, you will need to take higher Y-position quickly enough in order to be able to meet with him.

Thank you. I am not going to stop. At least because even that last run is still improveable (even if it’s hard to beleive). And, of course, because of my friends TASers, who inspire me. (upd) TASing EHZ1 again. 3 frames ahead. Not sure if such an improvement is worthy or not ;)
