That was an excellent run. Well-done, and highly entertaining. I do have a technical question. I noticed while watching Arkiandruski's comparison video that, sometimes, a screen would be identically played in both versions, from the movements of enemies to Soma's movements to which enemies dropped souls on what frame. This sometimes happens even when the prior screens are very different in both timing and souls dropped. Is this a result of you manipulating the RNG to be the same (or at least on a point in the cycle that yielded the same result) in both versions at the start of the identical screens? Thank you. :)

I think that probably means you downloaded the gmv wrong. The link he gave was not a direct link to a file even though it ends with ".gmv", so if you right-click and choose save-as on it you'll just save a web page. Gens doesn't know how to play HTML.
Er, that's how I downloaded it. Let me try that again... Yep, that fixed it. Thank you for the help.

Same thing happens with 10a, alas. :(

For those of you who have not played this game before, and want to follow along with the story, this gmv is now available....
Usually I wait for the AVIs, but I wanted to see this one now, so I downloaded and got things to work... well, sort of. I can't get this one to play in Gens 9.5c, although the non-texty one plays. When loaded, the "play movie" button is disabled, and both controllers are listed as UNKNOWN instead of 3-button, as in the non-texty TAS. (Everything else-- number of frames, rerecords, length-- also come in as 0s. I tried downloading 9f, but it doesn't work there, either, and the one I found glitches my screen up slightly while running. Odd. Any advice? ^^;

I found something that you might find amusing: non-tool-assisted videos of a skilled player playing Super Mario World Kaizo, also known as "A--hole Mario," a rather sadistic hack of Super Mario world. I also found ROMs of these hacks, but no patches; if I can figure out how to extract the patches from the pre-patched ROMs I could upload them in case any of you want to try it. It would make for an amusing TAS demo, methinks. WARNING: These videos give away the solutions to these levels. I feel like a moron, but how does one get the controller input to show up in SNES9x? I've looked through the menus and see no option.... Can't wait to see the movie. :) EDIT: Nevermind, just hit buttons until I found it. ^^; It's , by the way. Now to watch.

I still can't vote. I'm glad I bothered figuring out how to play the original emulator file for this, though. Was awesome.

...so maybe it's not the best game to TAS. Back to the drawing board....

This game was released in the US.
Ah. So the (quite popular) review I keep finding must be wrong, then. It makes finding it in Ohio more plausible, then; even now, with internet, I've never noticed an imported game in a game store, even on import-friendly handhelds. Maybe I should start looking at GBA games; most of the big NES ones seem to have been done already....

I was playing the ROM of Arkista's Ring, a NES game that I owned back in the day that no one else seems to have heard of. (I've read that it wasn't released in the US, which is odd; I live in Ohio and my parents found a copy of it somewhere and bought it.) It's sort of like a Gauntlet/Legend of Zelda hybrid. Christine, an elf, has to fight through something like 30 short stages, killing enemies with her bow and limitless arrows. In each level, she has to kill enough monsters to make the key appear, unlock the door(s) blocking the entrance to the next level, and get to the stairs or door or whatever. Enemies drop items, including health upgrades, bow and arrow improvements, two relics (one makes the game much easier, the other is useless in a TAS) and a handful of usable items; these drops could probably be manipulated. Oh, and there are ninjas (the strongest of which can jump over walls, take many hits to kill, even with the best bow/arrow, and is more difficult, IMO, than the actual final boss.) The goal is to find a relic called Arkista's Ring, which you get after beating the final boss the first time around. The problem with this game is that, to get the ending, you have to play through the stages four times, with the monsters getting faster each time. Not only would this get boring fast, I don't know if it's physically possible; Christine is, at times, swarmed with enemies that move faster than her and sit on top of her, some of the enemies near the end of each loop cause two damage (out of 10 with all health upgrades) per hit, and she doesn't stay invulnerable for more than a moment. I ended up using an infinite lives code and, in the final loop, one stage took me fifteen lives to actually complete. Has anyone else even played it?

I can't vote, but I liked it even though I don't remember ever having played it. I just have one question. ...Where the hell are Capt. Grid-Iron's pants?!?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bg0GE0uBzWo 99 Meg streaming video through Youtube. This is a 6 minute and some odd second no damage TAS of Adventure Mode on Super Smash Brothers Melee. Yes. A Gamecube game with a tool-assisted speed run. Appearantly, the guy who recorded this did much the same thing as emulator speed runners do. The GCN Pro Action Replay offers a feature like frame advance. He recorded the fights onto his computer, then edited the recordings and re-recordings on his computer, similar to using save states on a normal TAS. Cool, eh? ETA: Feh, it was already posted. Can this be locked/deleted? I see nothing...

Haven't watched yet, as I don't have the ROM on hand and have to hunt it down, but I have a suggestion from what I've been reading in this thread: Publish this run on April 1st. Hopefully, that'll make everyone happy.

Great run! I just have one technical question about the boss battle against Graham. At what point must you have the three souls equipped to not get the boring ending? I always though you had to have those three equipped for the entire fight, but you obviously only have them on for a couple of seconds, at most....

Nice job so far-- not quite ten minutes in-- but I've already noticed one thing that could speed up your run quite a bit. IIRC, if you press start you can skip dialogue. If I'm right you could probably shave off a minute or so.... Let me dig up my AoS cart and try it. I'll edit this post when I find out. ^^;
Only works from a cart that has game completion. Since we start emulated movies with a clear SRAM, no dialogs can be skipped.
Aw. Sorry, it's been a long time since I didn't have a completed file, and when I didn't I was reading the dialogues. Still impressed with your run. ^^

(Longtime lurker, first-time poster. ^^;) ...Holy crap. That was insane, on both the runner's part and the designer's part. I'd vote 'yes' if I could, even though it's belated....
