I'd like to emphasize that we should think about what this will look like to the audience. Taking over consoles is cool and all, but if the big payoff is just that we show a little demoscene video on an NES (or some other "small" ACE demo), I don't think it's going to have that much of an impact, no matter how much effort went into achieving that video.
That's exactly why my intended payload is "live" and able to respond to things happening in the room, i.e. an equalizer that moves based on when the audience claps, or can be fed from some awesome soundtrack (possibly one produced by one of the newer consoles). I'm more than willing to experiment with the virus idea, though, having one console take over the next take over the next, and simply physically moving TASBot that has now been upgraded to work without even touching a controller from one console to another to show where the locus of control is as the process advances. I'm willing to pursue all avenues here. Thanks for the feedback!

Unfortunately, no. The article itself links to this submission (which is how we got into this mess in the first place, we had to submit the run to get a link to put into the article to get it published to get the submission text to submit the run to get a li... I've gone cross-eyed). For anyone changing their vote, please state that in a new post so the run can be judged based on how it really is and not the incomplete run it had to start out as, which I should note largely happened that way because AGDQ prep was more important at the time and it was either submit something incomplete or miss the opportunity to have the article link to the submission, but I digress. Thanks for the feedback!

The old 6 Golden Coins would be good to try. I have no idea how well it might sync.
In order to get something that would sync well enough on a console I would probably need to use lsnes and for convienence I would probably do it with SGB. I would be more than willing to try creating my own run of 6 Golden Coins, seeing as I actually own it. I do not have a copy of Metroid II, unfortunately.

Gyre, I like almost all of your ideas for different reasons. Some of them we've already shown during the bonus block for AGDQ 2014 (Dr. Mario and The Legend of Zelda) and we did Mega Man for SGDQ 2015 so that's probably out but I'd love to do a run of Metroid with commentary. I was unable to get Battletoads to behave and true had poor results with other Battletoads movies as well, per the Console Verification Tests page, so that one is definitely out. River City Ransom sounds interesting, it hasn't been tried yet. These things take time and cartridges. :)

My current plan for SGDQ is to move forward with Super Scribblenauts and whatever Endrift gets working. My intent is to shoot for 45 minutes of content with a maximum of 3 different things or so. I'm not set in stone on this but I don't want to take time away from AGDQ 2017 preparations. As an aside, I'm sick and tired of having to scramble at the last minute because payloads and hardware aren't ready in time, leaving the team on-site at the event scrambling until minutes before the TAS block starts. Here and now I'm declaring that all hardware for SGDQ (and for that matter, AGDQ) must be fully vetted, including any visualization boards, no later than two months before the event, and all payload seriously done other than minor tweaks a month before the event, because it's clear that we need time for both technical rehearsals as well as presentation rehearsals. But, that's enough of a rant from me on that subject. ;) One GB game that might be interesting is Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, or perhaps Metroid II. We don't even know if this can work, though, and the majority of my energy will be devoted on AGDQ 2017 work. Thoughts?

My original intent was to make it so if the next console in the chain failed for any reason, we would just reset that console and send data "fresh", reducing the risk that we would be unable to complete the chain. I realize there is some amount of risk, and if through the process of developing the chain of consoles we discover it is too fragile we will give up and do something else, but I'm not willing to admit defeat without even trying. :) Virus yes! :) While I originally envisioned this as one long chain of unbroken consoles I kind of like the idea of writing a virus that can take over the next console in the chain independently. It may be the same level of risk - as described above, if the next console has a problem the payload for the previous console would need the same logic to know that if the "downstream" console powers off, restart the payload from the start. This approach tells me that we need to start from the biggest consoles and work our way back down as some of the movie files could be too large to fit in memory on the slower consoles. Much testing is needed to know if this is even a sane idea but we still have 11 months to go so there's time to change course as needed. Thanks for everyone's ideas!

I do think this is a publish-worthy run; both in technical achievement and historical significance. My question, though, lies in the category. Would this fall into the 'demo' category, or 'executes arbitrary code', or both? Other than that, I hope my feedback helps!
I would obviously prefer that this fell into a demo or technical showcase tier, but the site lacks that. Instead, this is an arbitrary code exploit on an entirely new platform and thus if it is deemed to be entertaining and is accepted I believe it should be placed in Moons, against SGB (not GB!), and *not* obsoleting any existing runs as it is in no way the same game or even the same platform as other previous arbitrary execution runs. I know I'm repeating myself, but this is something that I think it's very important I convey as I do not want to see other runs obsoleted. Thanks for the positive feedback!

I'm very happy to announce that the PoC||GTFO issue 0x10 issue is finally out, which contains the article that fully describes this run with diagrams, workflows, and much more. The article describes how to take the .pdf itself and run it as a movie file in lsnes which is a movie file equivalent to the one used in this submission. As noted, there was a chicken-and-egg problem; the article itself references this submission by URL / submission number but this run contains the article itself; I absolutely had to submit this run early in order to meet the deadline for the issue to be printed and subsequently distributed at ShmooCon 2016. I also initially hoped this could be accepted in 2015 but that was a secondary concern. I would like to respectfully request that this movie be re-voted on based on the new content, or if you've already voted, please provide feedback to help Nach make a decision. Thanks!

Well, the rest of the run is going to be pretty insane, but if there's any particular level you want to do, just let me know. All your level 1 input is gone but you still have the setup/menus!
Sounds good - hit me up on IRC, I may be able to route a level or something but I don't want to overcommit either. I am super happy to see this moving!

Hi everyone - first, I'm still recovering from everything, it was many hours of work to organize so many different things and I have not yet read every post in this thread. For those with constructive criticism, know I'm taking all of it into consideration. I'd like to echo that yes, we had to be very careful what information we gave the TAS'ers and we went through a total of 5 runthroughs from TAS'ers ahead of time, tweaking the documentation each time to try to find the right balance where the realtime runners stood a chance. Seeing as the result was within a few seconds I think we balanced it correctly, but know that it was not my intent to annoy others and I'm sorry for those who found the experience to be unpleasant. I would also like to personally apologize for the bad commentary. There were some things that were out of my control. I had worked with CoolMatty ahead of time on what we were going to display on screen but he developed a health concern so serious that he had to seek immediate care. The developers of the game (Jordan and Rusty from Vector 35) and I had a long conversation with Hannah who took over in his stead and we had everything written down in a notepad, but Hannah fell ill and was not in the stream room. It fell to Vulajin to understand what needed to happen, and while we had discussed everything ahead of time it was just too much to overcome. As a result, the name of the game was never displayed, the schedule was never updated, and I was unaware of both problems until after the event. Of the things I did have control over, I'm most disappointed in my inability to be properly prepared to provide commentary. I was still getting urgent requests from p4plus2 and the level designers (SethBling and Panga) and while we had rehearsed absolutely everything several times from a technical perspective I never forced everyone to put down their various soldering irons, controllers, laptops, and other tools long enough to walk through a "who is going to say what?" rehearsal. This resulted in haphazard (or entirely missing) introductions of people, poor visibility of what the goals of each portion were, and a complete lack of review of what a TAS is (other than the review I did an hour prior to the start of the block when announcing the closure of the speed TAS competition). In part, reacting to feedback from SGDQ 2015 that the introduction was too long and reacting from Twitch chat and Reddit repeatedly saying that they could care less about our nerd stuff, I cut out the vast majority of the review of what a TAS is, but I now see that this was very unwise on my part. The pendulum swung too far in the other direction, and the consequences were the confusion people had about what had happened. For those who are interested in downloading the game, I've temporarily placed the file here until it goes live officially: http://sonic.net/~ac/tas/PwnAdventureZ.zip

To reconcile this, I suggest (but by no means demand) that this run obsolete the current credits warp run.
We must stop this madness - this is a work of art in and of itself that should not obsolete a run that was designed purely for speed. To rephrase, the intent of this run was clearly a playaround and should not obsolete the any% credits warp run. I believe strongly that we need to have a tier for this kind of thing, but in the meantime a Moons tier run that does not obsolete a % / speed-oriented run is fine with me. With that off my chest, I must definitely vote Yes. I was receiving weekly and sometimes daily updates from Lord Tom as we went through the process of refining the run for AGDQ. I was very thankful that Lord Tom was always willing to listen to my feedback, ignore it when necessary, and go that extra mile to make it perfect. This was a great run to have at AGDQ 2016 and the block wouldn't have been the same without it. Thanks!

This competition doesn't feel like a TAS competition, more like a route-planning competition. I really was looking forward to it, but once I saw the game I was demotivated. I was expecting one where there's route-planning while TASing, like choose between two different paths througth a room. The game is probably is fine if people already knew how big the team needs to be it and there would be better recourses for newcomers, but I find like Arc already said it's not very newcomer friendly when contestants are encouraged to look at the asm code to figure stuff out and complicated glitches. That's to much to expect from a newcomer. Why aren't the map asm's converted to actual maps that everyone can easily understand. Looking at the asm's is usually faster than playing, so people who can read the asm's have a unfair advantage in time.
Err, the ASM code is there if you want to look at it, but the intent is that people read the instructions file or the player guide, or specifically one of the linked writeups. I'm getting the impression a few people are trying to make this a bit more difficult than it needs to be. :) Having said that, I absolutely recognize that this type of game isn't a favorite for everyone, but we had complaints about the "Run Right For Great Justice" nature of Streemerz because it was effectively completely linear so go figure. Due to schedule constraints at AGDQ 2016 the announcement of the conclusion will occur directly following Mario Kart 8. You'll need to have your submission in by the second the interview block cuts off. Best of luck to the competitors!

I agree with much of what Arc is saying here. For a Speed-TAS competition with a 4 hour time limit, the best game choices are ones that would be accessible to TASers of all levels of experience. The game chosen this time looks like it makes the competition be accessible mostly for only some of the best TASers on the sight, which is a minority of the player community. In contrast, I think that Streemerz, which was used last time, was a great example of a game for this kind of competition.
I completely and utterly disagree with this belief. This run does not require precise TAS execution, merely good routeplanning. It requires completely different skills than Streemerz intentionally. :) I think what might be happening is it seems too intimidating and people are giving up before they even start, but for anyone who takes the time to read the copious documentation already available about how to complete the game using fast strats it's possible to complete it within 4 hours even as a solo player. I will *definitely* concede that there is a certain amount of luck, however - it's possible some will try a method that won't pan out as well as they had hoped and will be out of time, and that's a definite risk with a game of this type. Expect different kinds of games in future speed TAS competitions, however. Best of luck to the competitors, as of this writing you have a little less than an hour of time left!

Pwn Adventure Z looks like Spiritual Warfare. It would be an accomplishment just to figure out how to finish the game within four hours. This gaming genre requires the most careful planning and testing, so why choose it for a four-hour speed TAS competition? And then the guide overtly discourages most people with the exploit discussion. Some programming wizard is going to figure out how to total control right to the credits, so why try? I was hoping it would be a straightforward, speedrun-friendly, Metroidvania-style game where the challenge would be in maintaining forward movement, making precise jumps, speed/damage boosting, and fighting bosses.
You're making a very bad assumption that the expert method is faster. You are encouraged to routeplan and find your own way through the game. There are some suggestions in the instructions on where to look and you can read some of the existing writeups of routes to get ideas of where to start. We did several testruns with several people and most of them were at least able to complete the game alone. We have high confidence that teams of competitors will be just fine. Join #tasvideos to discuss as you feel led, and best of luck!

It's down to the wire, we haven't rehearsed anything yet, things have been utter chaos, and it's been absolutely amazing. This has been an awesome past few days and I can't wait to show what we have in store tomorrow, even if we're all dead tired (and still awake) and even if we have had to overcome some really terrifying obstacles. This is likely the last update prior to things going live but feel free to ask last minute questions and I'll try to get to it. Thanks for the support, all!

For AGDQ 2016 dwangoAC is organizing an open speed TAS competition that will run for 4 hours, to be announced during the interview block prior to Crash Bandicoot on Saturday, January 9th around 10:00 AM EST (15:00 UTC); see the AGDQ 2016 schedule for the exact time which will shift. Anyone can compete and teaming up is encouraged. The winning submission will be shown during the TASBot Vs. Humans run. See the full speed TAS competition thread for more information!

So, when you say "working in teams in encouraged", does that mean the final movie submission can be put under multiple names? Or is it still individual entries, just with people working together to find strategies and exploits?
You should appropriately use the author field in the movie file as this is the name we will be using. It would be nice if each team cold submit their run only once but we can detect duplicates so it isn't anything we are worried about. How competitors organize is up to them.

Greetings, Per the AGDQ 2016 preparation thread, I am yet again organizing a speed TAS competition that will run on Saturday, January 9th during AGDQ 2016. The exact time of the competition will depend on a few factors, but here are the details:
  • The competition will officially start at a somewhat variable time on Saturday, January 9th, currently planned to be directly before Crash Bandicoot; keep an eye on the official schedule for the exact time of that run, but as of this writing it is somewhere around 10:00 AM EST. If circumstances force this to change (especially due to game setup delays at AGDQ 2016) this bullet point will be updated.
  • At the time the competition starts, a .zip file containing the game, a guide, and other instructions will be posted on the http://tasvideos.org homepage.
  • Competitors will have roughly 4 hours to complete the game and submit it using a submission form that will be available for the entire duration of the competition, ending with an announcement that will be made during Mario Kart 8; this final cutoff is subject to change pending the AGDQ 2016 schedule and will be announced at the start of the competition.
  • The game will be an NES game created specifically for this event (this thread is the first time this has been publicly announced).
  • The competition is targeted at the QuickNES core of BizHawk. You are allowed to use FCEUX or use the NESHawk core ofBizHawk but we suggest using QuickNES as it is the most tested to run on real hardware. For best results, use QuickNES on BizHawk 1.11.14; if you decide to use FCEUX we cannot guarantee we will be able to convert the movie. The official instructions will state to use BizHawk.
  • The game is nonlinear and *will* require nearly as much time researching and routeplanning as actual TAS'ing.
  • Working in teams is expected and encouraged.
  • Breaking the game completely is highly encouraged, so long as the winning condition is met.
  • Said winning condition will be announced and clearly documented in the instructions. The run that meets the winning criteria in the shortest time will be represented by dwangoAC during a race scheduled at the beginning of the TAS block.
  • Tompa will be participating in the competition but will submit his file directly to micro500 who will represent him; I will not know what Tompa's run looks like and Tompa and micro500 will not have access to the winning submission.
  • Two human runners will be participating in the race. They were privately made aware of the game choice weeks ago and have had ample time to practice and routeplan but will be playing in realtime without the aid of tools.
  • The resultant 4-way race will be commentated live by one of the developers of the game.
  • A framewar following the event is encouraged.
If you have questions, please don't be shy about asking them. I will update this post (and include a changelog) with any changes. Happy speed TASing! Update, 2016-01-11: The event is over! Thank you to all who participated. The game will be officially posted soon, but in the meantime it can be found at this temporary download link. More updates as soon as the dust settles. Changelog: 2016-01-05: Initial post - ask questions to fill this in! 2016-01-09: Noted QuickNES is the correct core to use in BizHawk 2016-01-09: Hardened BizHawk requirement due to lack of time to test 2016-01-11: It's over! Download links coming

Updates to the updates:
  • Have someone complete writing a dumpscript for BizHawk for console verification - thanks to xy2_ we have a version of Tetris to work with but true has been busy with work and I could use some help here. It might be that micro500 and I tackle this after he shows up but there's a fairly long list of things still left to be done so if someone wants to lend true a hand I'm sure it would be appreciated.
  • Update website with GDQ banner from the banners thread, probably the one with TASBot - Nach has tackled this the past couple of times but hasn't yet managed to get this done.
  • All console-verification payloads / movie files must be in a "ready to present" state no later than the 31st - we have a passable version of SMB3; p4plus2 has not yet delivered a console-verifyable file but we have confidence it will work based on previous testing. I hope to get something very soon so we have at least something to fall back on as needed.
  • We need to finalize and test the TASJudy script - keylie and Solarplex are tackling this one but it's at medium risk as the entire chain has not yet been tested.
  • Lots of work on art for Brain Age is still left to do - we seem to be doing well on source material now but they still need to be drawn / converted into lines and I'm fairly confident this will keep micro500 busy for a while. We also hope to incorporate memes and happenings during AGDQ 2016 to push this over the edge so help and support throughout the marathon to identify these things and create art for them would be helpful.
  • Someone needs to prime PR for the event, probably me - not started yet, but I will reach out as soon as I find some of that elusive thing called free time...
  • I need to make a thread specifically for the speed TAS competition rules, explaining what will happen and more or less when it will happen, and get it up on the news page. - This has been delayed because there are concerns that the time will shift too drastically on Saturday to use that timeslot; I will post as soon as I possibly can with full rules and the time identified for the competition which is now looking like Friday evening more than ever (even though I would much prefer it on Saturday).
  • We need to complete several full runthroughs of the entire block as I do not want to go through another event without rehearsing multiple times, like, TED Talk quality rehearsing. Especially because Brain Age requires careful human scripting and response to deliver the punchlines. This definitely still needs to be done.
  • New wiring harness for NES; the 2nd player controller I have now only has 4 wires so we need to make a new one for the speed TAS competition.
  • Additional modular Lego blocks - TASBot has to be more versatile than any year yet and we need to figure out if he's capable of holding the DS or if we should have that on a pedestal.
  • Last-minute Twitch Helps Play... scrambling with Python scripts - inevitably we'll need help with things at the last minute if p4plus2's payload pans out the way we think it will; I suspect I will be relying on the current Python people for this but it's something we do need to keep tabs on.
  • More @MrTASBot tweets - dama1138 has kept us moving in the right direction but if you have a suggestion for something to tweet lest us know.
As always there's more that I'm forgetting or can't write here so feel free to swing by #tasbot if you want to lend a hand with something and more than likely there will be at least something that needs doing. :) Thanks to all for the help!

5:53 is the actual game screen, right? In that case, consider my mind officially blown. With that, here's a Yes vote, and here's to this year's event!
Yes, that is the, er, "website browser" browser we created in the SNES. It took p4plus2 quite some time to get the palette right for the number of unique colors. Most of them are dedicated to the purple area at the top. You'll note that the actual website was defaced as well, as captured on the Archive.org wayback machine.

Before I vote... I just have to know... What was the twitch thing? was the emulator sending to the internet?
The lsnes emulator Lua script was a one-way street and itself could not talk to the internet, but to create the input that we fed the Lua script I ran everything on the real console and the user tasred joined the Freenode IRC channel #tasbot and sat idle. No one said anything during that time so the bitstream of button presses that comprises the screenplay found in the https://github.com/TheAxeMan301/PptIrcBot repo as https://github.com/TheAxeMan301/PptIrcBot/blob/master/RedScreenplayCorrected.txt was uninterrupted, i.e. the only participants were from the screenplay as dwangoAC, TASBot, and RED (tasred on IRC due to the nick being taken on Freenode at the time). You'll note that this was not the case when I later did the same thing a second time while recording it with a camera: Link to video You'll see that near the end of the screenplay there's a brief, unrelated conversation from Ilari and I, which is exactly the kind of thing you'd expect out of IRC and is basically a short sample of what it would have looked like had we done this on the Twitch chat stream for AGDQ 2015. :) Thanks for your feedback!

I've been thinking about the "PI Day" TAS. While it's been argued to keep it as is, the PI one also obsoleted the previous movie that played music with a familiar background due to being shorter to setup and more entertaining. Should that be applied to here as well? Doesn't seem fair not to for the original movie if this gets agreed as more entertaining but doesn't get compared to another "executes arbitrary code" movie of a similar game.
You're making the assumption that Pokemon Yellow on an original Game Boy / DMG is the same game as Pokemon Red on a Super Game Boy. I argue *quite strongly* that these are different games and this run should not obsolete any previous run. It's a completely different platform. :)

I've updated the submission text to include a scaled image of an amazing teaser poster made by Ange Albertini as well as an updated link to the above encode (thanks!). I also replaced the branch name now that the phrase "SGB" appears in the console name as the original branch name was redundant. Some people have asked if they can change their votes now that the submission file has been replaced but that is not possible; I will take the full consequences of this as I deliberately posted this file early in order to give the judges more time to decide so this can potentially be posted in 2015 (it would be silly to have it listed as 2016 after all of the hard work we put into it). All that to say I will leave it to the discretion of the judge to make a decision based on all feedback in the thread so please feel free to post your thoughts below. Thanks for the support, all!

Please replace the submission movie file with: http://acbit.net/static/tas/PokemonRedForPoCGTFOUpdatedSubmissionFile.lsmv This version *is* longer, but for reasons that should become apparent very soon. I've asked for an encode using Amaratica's display method. Thanks!
