The whole point of an endless runner is that there is no limit, but perhaps they made a mistake in the way the number of meters traveled is recorded so it eventually loops or does something else unexpected. I don't think I want to try to find out. :) Yes, it would be possible to play the game for a longer duration without it hitting this kill screen by running into obstacles, but then the only logical outcome would be to play forever, which is possible with BizHawk but isn't something I'm going to try myself.
jlun2 wrote:
Also you're saying even if you made the jump, you would just end up freezing in place? How is that triggered? It it because of character speed?
To phrase differently, assuming you never hit any obstacles and thus your speed continues to increase, the kill screen happens at the exact same time (although you can slightly alter its appearance by changing when you jump). The kill screen you see in my run is literally a box - there is a ceiling above, solid floor below, and a solid wall in front. If you hit a wall while standing on the floor the game glitches out and you see the zipping effect demonstrated at the end. There is literally no way to get past that screen that I was able to find, but keep in mind that my ability to restore states and try different outcomes was compromised by the environment I was TASing in so it's always possible some other creative input can allow the game to go further.

Ah, there's a difference between a Kill screen and a game over situation. This is a killscreen as defined by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kill_screen where the game crashes and it is impossible to continue. On that note, I tried altering input a bit but I couldn't figure out a way to make the kill screen happen later, all I could do was change what it looked like. The kill screen appears to be directly tied to the character's speed.

Well, according to http://www.rgcd.co.uk/2011/12/c64anabalt-c64-2011.html there are two different audio tracks you can pick from; I made the TAS on the official Encore soundtrack and regrettably the run does not sync with the Ghormak version. I'm unaware of a version with jumping sound effects, and the only way to "choose" is by playing a different version of the game / cartridge file. Having said that, I really like the charm of only having the background music, which is absolutely amazing considering the SID chip was developed ~34 years ago.

I absolutely don't find this as any means of an ending point for this game. First, the game is about travelling as far as possible before dying.
Indeed! Had I hit obstacles (the boxes or briefcase-looking square objects) I could have slowed down and played literally forever. One of the other possible goals I considered was playing the game until the background music looped, but that would have been about 5 minutes long and I discovered the kill screen instead.

Second, what I see from the encode is the character walks on the glitched platform and hits the wall, falling between the side of the screen and the wall and everything else is history.
Almost - I just updated the submission text with some more information on what happens here. In short, I crafted input that embedded the player character into the wall and caused the player to zip around the level, and I paused for a few frames to demonstrate the player being embedded in the wall. (When all you have is a single jump button, options are a bit limited :). As noted in the updated submission text, I could optionally end input at the moment the jump is complete to land on the last platform where you get boxed in, hit the wall, and walk in place forever but I felt this was a more entertaining and complete ending that shows the game over screen. If you have another goal choice in mind, though, by all means let me know!

What name would you pick, then? I ask because I was trying to figure out how to pitch the idea of a repeat of a Masterjun-style run for AGDQ 2015 and I finally had to settle on the phrase total control because the SDA community is not familiar with (and probably not interested in) the nuances of what Arbitrary Code Execution means. I'm not convinced that what we have here is total control (for that to happen, the TAS'er would need to, in my opinion, be able to issue the prohibited DROP command or something equally obviously demonstrating total control of the entire environment). What we have here is tantamount to a debug panel. Perhaps In-game Developer Environment Access (IDEA)? ...I might be bad at acronyms here. :)

After many, many hours on my part organizing the submission ideas thread, organizing the trial TAS race, creating run descriptions, and creating the video, I'm proud to say that I have submitted 5 ideas we came up with (with several hours of time left to spare :). I'm now going to have a little rest and spend some time with my wife and kids, but I'll be keeping an eye on the submission process to see what gets in and what gets cut. My hope is that everything makes it in (it won't, the statistics show that only one of the ideas will likely be accepted) but I'm especially hopeful for the TAS race - I know I sound somewhat haughty pushing my own creation but at the same time I think it would be a great way to bring the two communities together and increase audience participation. Thank you again to everyone who helped support me in this process, and here's to a great TASVideos showing at AGDQ 2015!

Link to video Any last comments? I'm not happy with the audio, and I'm also not happy with some of iMovie's limitations on what I can do (no ability to crossfade "myself" (the upper layer) in and out of view, problems with the timeline getting messed up when adding videos, etc.). As it is, the only way I was able to get this to work was to create the greenscreen video and export it then reimport it over the game clips. CoolMatty indicated that perfection wasn't as important as technical details. I'm hoping I have everything right here, but let me know if there's anything else I should change before I make the actual submission today. Thanks!

This is a pitch that should cover a total control proposal and provide an open invitation to Mike to review our games list. Masterjun's SMW total control Pong and Snake run at AGDQ 2014 will be hard to top. We're testing Pokemon Yellow (using a SGB) and other Arbitrary Code Execution games to create a new surprise payload. Mike / organizers, please feel free to propose a game or concept of your choice! I (dwangoAC) will work with the TASVideos community to make it happen if feasible. See: http://tiny.cc/T- Edit: Fixed the game name and tightened some text. Is this the right tone? Should I be saying something else? OK, there's all five submission text segments. Please let me know if I should modify any of them. I plan on submitting early tomorrow in order to beat the deadline of 11:59 PM EDT by a large margin (I do *not* want to take risks). The only thing I'm concerned about is finishing the video pitch in time... A.C. ******

Speed TAS competition pitch: A normal TAS is like a grand master in an untimed chess match playing perfectly. A speed TAS is like the same grand master playing speed chess slightly less perfectly. During a set time any viewer + Tompa can submit a TAS of a just-announced game, ending in a four-way race of the fastest viewer TAS, Tompa's TAS, and two already prepared human runners. See: http://tiny.cc/TaS (This took forever to condense down to 400 or less characters, and weighs in at 396. TODO: Update that post to be a better landing page for Mike :)

Playaround TAS pitch A playaround TAS aims to entertain rather than complete a game as fast as possible. Console-verified suggestions include RBI Baseball in 4:29 which demonstrates bizarre behavior such as the pitcher pitching from first base. Another choice is a run of Family Feud in ~7:00 specifically crafted for AGDQ 2015; by using text parser abuse, various Twitch chat memes can be exhibited.

(Note: I'll be making individual replies for each pitch; Weatherton's MK64 pitch is fine as-is so I'll be pasting that directly in.) Final Fantasy pitch as written by TheAxeMan: A TAS on the original NES Final Fantasy takes about 70 min. SDA SS record is about 4 hours and RNG can't be gamed in realtime so it's unlikely to be in a marathon otherwise. Names can be a donation item - your name in a TAS! RNG seed is in SRAM, requiring a novel trick to deduce the value and get in sync. Very technically complex and TAS author TheAxeMan would be on hand to explain everything. Nice - just barely fits in 400 characters, but I really want to hit on the White Mage concept and that we can run it in the background... Here's my attempt: This is a technically complex TAS; Final Fantasy uses an RNG seed stored in SRAM, but this can be deduced by analyzing the outcome of the first battle. Author TheAxeMan would be on hand to commentate. This 70 minute TAS can instead be started and left to run during other games, resuming at the final battle (with a White Mage surprise ending cat.). Donation incentives for player names.

The video is completely fine. I think you should submit this whole thing as "TAS Block" without going into details about games. If someting specif gets rejected you can easily rearrange the "TAS Block" afterwards.
That is precisely what I did last year and it worked out well. However, this year the submission process has changed and we have to get the pitch text to fit in 400 characters, so I'm forced to submit everything separately. Even if I wasn't forced I think I would prefer to have TAS exposure spread out throughout the marathon rather than all in one block. I still plan to reinforce that Mike can pick a game of his choice, which is I think the primary thing you are interested in.

No mention of just showing a standard awesome TAS? It'd only take a sentence or two, and it'd give a graceful fallback option if whoever's reviewing these videos doesn't like any of the more "edgy" submissions.
I aimed to cover that in my description of the playaround category and my subtle hint at the end where I mention there are other potential game choices (while playing the SMB3 glitched TAS in the background). I have some other recorded clips I can insert that hint at that a bit better that i can throw in, though. I have to be extremely careful - submissions are limited to 5 games, and they are extremely strict about saying that if you go over you get "0" games. I anticipate that because I am making a single submission on behalf of all of TASVideos that we'll be given some leeway but I don't want to push my luck, so instead I'll make sure that I'm a bit more clear about the fact that we have other options available. Thanks for the feedback! Is anyone else willing to help me edit these clips? I can provide full source material and even the iMovie project (yes, I used iMovie - it's what I had available. :) I'm writing the submission text tonight but that won't give me much time for the video editing.

Link to video Please take a look; this is unfinished but is the direction I want to go in. I still need to replace the backgrounds for some games and I need to add Weatherton's race video. I can upload raw video if someone is willing to do a better job of editing today. I am running out of time to write the submission text as I was up very late yesterday trying to make a dead camera work and trying to make a sleeping bag stand in for a proper green screen. Any offers of help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

All contestants completed the game objective of releasing Baby Moses into the river and all competitors made a good-faith effort to complete their TAS'es in under two hours in the spirit of the honor-system time limit. Out of the competitors, Eszik, Scepheo, and Tompa opted to use BizHawk, while Spikestuff, TheAxeMan, MESHUGGAH, TASEditor, and Truncated used FCEUX. The rerecord times seem to indicate that some TAS'ers opted to use completely different strategies, but I'll allow the authors to comment on their own strategies. The results are:
  1. Tompa: 2997 rerecords, 01:59.20
  2. Truncated: 91 rerecords, 01:59.67
  3. TASEditor: 7084 rerecords, 01:59.82
  4. MESHUGGAH: 3717 rerecords, 01:59.92
  5. Scepheo: 645 rerecords, 02:00.13
  6. Eszik: 1183 rerecords, 02:00.17
  7. TheAxeMan: 180 rerecords, 02:00.40
  8. Spikestuff: 2724 rerecords, 02:02.97
Solarplex created an awesome four-player comparison video of the top four entries and another one for the next four: Link to video[/video] Link to video Congratulations, Tompa! Now that this competition is over, please feel free to post comments and feedback in this thread, as well as suggestions for future games we might consider doing this with. You are welcome to send me PM's if you want to keep the game choice secret, but please note that I will not likely have time to organize another competition myself until after AGDQ 2015 preparations are complete. So I'm bad at dates on the calendar and apparently overoptimistic on how much I can get done. I'm currently trying to get everything ready for the AGDQ submission so I'm going to push off the speed TAS competition deadline to more or less Monday morning PST time, although again I'll just be grabbing whatever files have been sent to me by then and take it from there. I have 8 submissions so far, which has been a good response. If you were on the fence, now is your chance to get a run in.

Yeah, the only problem for this would be defining very precise rules, especially for RAM adresses.
I don't anticipate there ever being a speed TASing competition with limitations or rules about memory addresses. I'll be honest in saying that I don't exactly understand what you are referencing. From my perspective, future speed TASing competitions might include things that wouldn't normally qualify as a submittable TAS such as "Take this obscure racing game and complete track X in the fastest in-game completion time and limit yourself to one hour". The fact that this is all on the honor system means that we really shouldn't be taking this too seriously - this is just for fun.

Yes, and I think I already answered your point above, but to reiterate, if we have on-site TAS'ers that need to prepare, my plan is to give them way more than an hour to get the target TASing environment up and running with a selection of potential games, but withhold the game choice until the start of the block of time they have to work on it. Alternatively, I'll select a game that is free (at least free as in lunch) with a download link and everyone will be able to get it at the same time. This is more likely if the competition is open for audience participation, which I'm liking the concept of more and more. Anyway, I still don't think I've adequately answered your questions but I hope this at least helps. Thanks for your interest!

I think we should host some short competition just as this just to allow the TASer to polish their skills... Look at the SM64 TAS competition... or the level designing competition of SMWC. It's small, but it forces to polish some skills. I learned a lot by doing quick TASes(Didn't submit since I made silly mistakes such as beating a enemy I didn't have to and that only takes a lot of time). The competition could be simply complete a game. But it could be find useful adresses in a short time, use the least time X button, etc. Thoughts? ^^
I actually really like the idea of continuing to do this on a somewhat regular basis. I don't know if I would want to always be the coordinator, especially since this type of competition is ripe for abuse and hurt feelings if it isn't run well, but so far I'm happy with how this has worked out so I think there's a future for this. I'm thrilled by the response in this thread. A few notes: I received true's MultiReplay board! He said he doesn't yet have an official page, but you can eventually find information at http://truecontrol.org and i suspect he'll make a post at some point announcing it. I'll be showing it off in the coming days, as I'm using it for console verifications. Corrodias, thank you very much for the game suggestions. I borrowed a few cartridges to test with from a friend in town including RBI Baseball so I'll let you know how that works out. TheAxeMan, I borrowed a copy of Final Fantasy and I have the Raspberry Pi up and running. I hope to have time to try out the script, but we'll have to see. I don't have a way to clear RAM, however, so I suspect I will not get far with this this weekend. Regarding an ACE exploit, I borrowed a Super Game Boy and Pokemon Yellow. I do not have high hopes, but it's worth a try and would be far easier than trying to get an original Game Boy working. Does anyone else want to tackle a new total control payload on an existing verifiable game? I've received a suggestion from DarkKobold on a really awesome SNES game choice but the game will have to be re-run in lsnes and the.. er.. inputs need to be modified. If you are interested in assisting with creating something fun, please contact me privately. (DarkKobold, I am still not entirely convinced that keeping the game name a secret is a good idea, but I'll keep it on the down low for now). I've ordered a copy of the game with two-day shipping (at a very reasonable cost!) to determine if it will even sync. Regarding the race, I'm very pleased with the response in the speed TASing competition thread. The initial results show that this is a fairly viable option as long as the time limit and game choice are carefully selected, but I might have a different opinion after seeing the full results. :) If you haven't made an attempt in the race and you're still thinking about whether to do it or not, go for it - there's a 2 hour total time limit on the honor system but feel free to break it up if you need to. Thanks again, everyone!

I'll be collecting all of them that I find the day after the deadline (hint: this means you can be a little bit late) and I'll make an announcement about the results, hopefully with some statistics. I might be asking for a volunteer to help with encodes, as I'd like to produce a race encode of the top x entries (either top 2 or top 4 depending on how ambitious the encoder is feeling). Thanks again, everyone.

Does playing the game casually count as research? Similarly, can you participate if you've played the game in the past?
Especially for this trial run, I see no reason why this would disqualify you. Even for the final iteration it is likely the runners will be given a list of possible games (a dozen or more games, likely) so they can at least ensure they have them but the goal is to have the final game choice be a surprise and have all the actual in-depth "How do I TAS this quickly?" part happen during the timed portion, if that made sense. It's probably pointless to try to "regulate" this out anyway - some people will have had more experience than others with a given game, and who would want to be told that they are disqualified for having too much experience? Great question - thanks for asking!

So wait I got a question: Which version of Bible Adventures there are 5!
I... did not know this. I spoke with TASEditor and he stated he used version 1.2. If you can use 1.2, use that one just so the results are comparable. Since I did not specify at the start, use whatever version you want to and note the version in your submission. Sorry for not noticing this earlier.
