Heh - yeah, we'll have to handle this carefully. Possibly by giving the runners a list of games that they need to have on hand and then announcing one of them out of the group, or by selecting a freeware game with a downloadable link (this is probably a requirement if the "second" TAS'er is an open audience competition).

this competition does sound interesting! So in respect to setting up TAS environment is mainly emulator, rom, and anything else before you start inputting? That would not include ram searching since that is considered researching
Right - start your clock after you have the emulator started and ROM located, i.e. directly before you load the ROM and start your movie. There's no need to be strict in this trial attempt so I didn't specify it earlier, but this will ensure that you're starting at about the same state that runners would be at in a realtime competition.

If this competition becomes reality in AGDQ, will the participants know in advance what game will be TASed, or is the idea that the game will be revealed only right when the 2-hour competition starts?
The idea is that the TAS'ers would know what platform the game would be on (likely to again be NES due to the variety of emulators available for it) but they would not know exactly what the game or goal choice would be until the competition starts. I'm taking a guess that 2 hours is a good time limit for Baby Moses but the time limit would be carefully set to ensure it is achievable. I've presented other ideas in the AGDQ 2015 potential participation thread about having two TAS'ers compete and pit their movie files against two realtime runners (who *would* know what game to practice ahead of time) to ensure that regardless of which side is faster there is at least some drama. One idea I came up with is to have a single on-site TAS'er and an open competition to allow anyone to submit a movie file, but this would require having someone to weed out troll submissions and ensure that the fastest result actually completed the goal. It'd still be an interesting way to invoke audience participation. Thanks for the interest, everyone!

Post subject: Speed TAS'ing competition: Make a TAS with a time limit!

Greetings, As part of organizing TASVideo's AGDQ 2015 submission I posted the idea of doing a speed TAS'ing race and decided to set up an initial competition. The concept is as follows: Consider chess. Like a TAS, a grand master in an untimed match may take an extremely long time to think out what will happen next and rewind in their head to plan out a game. In a a speed chess scenario, the same grand master has only a limited amount of time to consider each move. Speed TAS'ing is like speed chess - the TAS'er has a limited amount of time to TAS a game, so efficiency with TAS tools is required. For this initial competition, the goal is to see how well this concept will actually play out with a shorter game, so here are the constraints: - Anyone can participate; this is an open competition - The game for this competition is NES Bible Adventures "Baby Moses" v1.2 (completion is reaching the releasing Baby Moses ending cutscene) - The time limit (on the honor system) is 2 hours of TAS'ing time, starting from when you start researching or TAS'ing - Any and all pre-existing content can be referenced but your input file must be unique - All TAS's must be privately uploaded to movie storage no later than 2014-08-31 at 12:59 PM GMT extended to 2014-09-01 at 4:00 PM GMT (please PM me the link) The 2 hour time limit should not include setting up the TAS'ing environment but should include any time spent researching the game. In the spirit of competition, please do not reference the submissions of others; ideally this would be happening concurrently with everyone competing at the same time but it's better to be flexible for this trial. The time limit is entirely on the honor system; to keep yourself honest, consider streaming on Twitch or simply starting a stopwatch program. Just like speed chess, complete perfection is not an expectation in this competition, so the challenge is figuring out how to manage your time to allow optimizing the movie as much as possible in the time allowed. Edit: Please hold off on posting movie links or your completion time in this thread until after the deadline to prevent the introduction of bias - in a concurrent speed TAS'ing competition, no participant would know what the completion time of their competitor's TAS was until the competition was over, which is what I'm trying to emulate here. Instead, just upload your movie files as private WIP's and PM me the link. Once the deadline has passed I'll collect all of the submissions and share the results. Thanks! Speed TAS away, and thanks for everyone's support! Update: This initial competition is done and the results are very interesting! A.C. ******

This is just a friendly reminder that there is less than a week left before I need to submit the TASVideos response for AGDQ 2015. It's time to start thinking about donation incentives - if I submit the 5 ideas we have so far, are there any good incentives people can donate toward? Last time out of the ~$12K we raised during the TAS block less than $500 came from donation incentives, which is something I'd like to improve on this time around. As always, the Games Done Quick marathons are for charity so anything we can do to help raise money for a good cause would be awesome. Thanks for those who have contacted me in IRC about game suggestions. Keep em' coming, there's gotta be others out there we haven't thought of yet. Thanks!

I'm almost positive that we'll be using NES as there are multiple emulators that support it. I don't see any obscure or hard to TAS platforms being in the running for exactly the reasons you mentioned.

Given how much repetition is involved in making a TAS, wouldn't it get pretty boring pretty fast?
The four-hour TAS'ing time would be off-camera to allow the competing TAS'ers to fully concentrate on their work. There would be an initial announcement followed by the TAS'ers going to their respective corners to independently make the best TAS they can. At the end of the block of games the TAS'ers would play back their (hopefully finished) runs competing against each other and two other human players on the live stream. Oddly, the realtime speedrunners I've spoken to are extremely confident that they will come out on top, so it'll be interesting to see what the outcome is. I think there's enough interest in this idea that we should try a dry run. Can I get two volunteers? I'll pick a two-player race of appropriate length from a previous marathon which is on an easily TASable platform and the two volunteers will be given a set amount of time to complete a TAS of the game. The TAS'ers can reference any and all material they like but the TAS must be new material. After the time limit expires we'll post the results of the race and hopefully someone can do some kind of comparison encode. If the two volunteers are not available at the same time to do this "live" I think we can do the dry run on the honor system, i.e. allow the two runners to work on their own schedule but with a timer running. The purpose here is to ensure the concept is viable so that should be fine for now. So, any volunteers for this? Thanks for everyone's support!

I appreciate everyone chiming in. It seems like there are supporters for just about every idea I proposed (and a few detractors - fair enough). We still need someone other than Masterjun who wants to tackle a total control run (using ais523's definition where ACE is the Arbitrary Code Exploit and total control is the fun payload you program after you've executed said exploit). Does anyone have suggestions for good game choices to play back?

Edit: We made it in! See the Preparation for AGDQ 2015 thread for more details. I was proud to represent TASVideos at AGDQ 2014 and a number of people both here at TASVideos and elsewhere have asked me if I would put together a TAS submission for AGDQ 2015. After discussing this with adelikat, Nach, and most importantly my wife (asassyknitter), I've agreed to organize a pitch and (if we are accepted) organize the next steps, including representing TASVideos at the marathon pending financial viability. The AGDQ 2015 submissions are open until September 3rd and we can submit up to 5 games total with a maximum of 400 characters per game with video links highly encouraged. Submissions cannot be edited so the submission has to be perfect. By September 1st I would like to write and submit a single consolidated pitch representing the best that the TASVideos community has to offer. To that end, I would like to get some feedback on ideas people have for things we can do. Here are the ideas I'm aware of so far: - We could, well, play back TAS's we know sync and talk over them like I attempted to do for Gradius. Pros: It allows games that are not marathon safe to be shown in a marathon setting and can demonstrate the usefulness of TAS tools. There is an ever-growing list of console-verified games to choose from. Cons: I discovered about 45 seconds into my commentary for Gradius that I didn't know what else to say on camera during a ~10 minute run of complete perfection (less last-minute scrambling and more rehearsing on my part could have helped there). Let's be honest, it's just not as interesting to watch a run that you know will not fail unless there's a technical issue, although good commentary and appropriate setup can help make up for this deficiency. - TheAxeMan has created a nifty script that allows the Final Fantasy RNG to be deduced based on the outcome of the first battle. Combining this with a dynamic input script would allow us to replay this otherwise challenging to console verify game on a real console. Pros: It perfectly demonstrates exactly how well games have been disassembled and what TAS tools can do. It has a "Wait, you did *what*?" factor going for it. Cons: The run will be 70 minutes long and is a Final Fantasy RPG, which has not been well received in this marathon so far (see starting on page 7 of the AGDQ 2015 submissions thread for plenty of salt about the status of FFT). We would probably have to do this concurrently with something else, i.e. start this up, allow it to run in the background or in a small corner window, then bring it back up for the final boss battle, in which case the white mage run may be more appropriate). - Weatherton can modify the layout of Mario Kart 64's Choco Mountain to allow for a four-way human race in a modified landscape. I first heard about this idea from micro500 and I think this could be extremely interesting. I suspect that a TAS would set up the level so quickly that the participants in the race wouldn't actually know what to expect and their normal strategies would be useless leading to a very humorous race. Pros: It recreates the "Wait, a bot programmed the game and now real people are playing it!" feeling from AGDQ 2014. Cons: We did Mario Kart 64 last time and it might be seen as too much of a repeat. Shaming talented speedrunners by forcing them to run into rocks might be seen as abusive so we'll have to ensure runners with the right attitude and expectations are participating. - I came up with an idea for a TASer vs. human race (Edit: We tried it out and it was a lot of fun!). Two TAS'ers will be given a set period of time (say, 4 hours) to create a TAS of a game and compete against two realtime runners in a four-way race. The idea is that the realtime runners know what the game is ahead of time and can practice, while the TAS'ers have to speed TAS (similar to speed chess, where perfection is not possible and sacrifices have to be made). At the end of the set timeperiod, the two TAS'ers submit their movie files and all four runs are started at the same time in a race. Tompa has volunteered to be one of the TAS'ers and I have a potential volunteer for a realtime speedrunner. I also have a potential game in mind which I will need to privately test out (to ensure the TAS'ers stay in the dark). Pros: If the game choice is done well it could be extremely entertaining, and whether the humans or the TASers come out ahead there's still some tension until the race completes. The TAS'ers need not be present at the marathon, although it would be a benefit if they were. We'd get to show off TWO replay boards at once. Cons: It's complicated, and if there's one thing the technical crew at AGDQ hates it's complicated ideas. I think with the right pitch and a demo video these potential objections could be overcome but it's definitely a risk. The wrong game choice would completely kill this; it might be difficult to find a run that can be TAS'ed in x hours and be close in duration to the actual human RTA time. I have to figure out how to pitch it in 400 characters. - There have been ruminations of someone creating a new Arbitrary Code Exploit (ACE) run with an even more elaborate payload than what was shown in SMW at AGDQ 2014. It'd be hard to top Masterjun's achievement but it's not impossible. Pros: The arbitrary code execution was the high point of the marathon and was the subject of some really awesome articles - the Ars Technica coverage was my favorite. If a previously unknown exploit is exposed it could recreate the same wow factor. Cons: Masterjun has indicated that he would prefer to see someone else create the payload this year. At a certain point, we just can't keep making the payload bigger than the previous year (although the SNES Demoscene folk seem to have some good ideas). It just feels like the problem that M. Night Shyamalan has where his only trick is widely known and his popularity keeps dropping because the audience goes in knowing there will be a plot twist. Even with that pessimism I'm actually fairly optimistic that we can keep this arbitrary code execution fresh if we execute and present it correctly. Edit: Please keep in mind that the primary purpose of the Games Done Quick charity marathons is to raise money for good causes; if there are any good donation incentives please feel free to bring them up! Those are the ideas so far. I'd love to hear people's suggestions and I'll add to this list as the discussion unfolds. One other thing: I should say that I have honestly been humbled by the support I was given for AGDQ 2014 and I am extremely appreciative that there has been so much support to have me represent TASVideos again this year. I am treating this as a personal opportunity be the project manager and presenter again and I will do my best to fulfill that role. Thanks again for your support and I look forward to a lively discussion of ideas, A.C. ******

I may have propagated the idea that the console itself was at fault as we tried Gradius on a top-loading NES first and it failed at which point I stated that it may have been the console as I had only tested with front-loading consoles. We later swapped to the front-loading NES and it failed there as well. With as much testing as I've done since AGDQ 2014 I'm fairly convinced that it had way more to do with the interference from everything else around the controller cables, the console, the Raspberry Pi, and the replay board itself. Regarding the name, I had a discussion with several people on IRC about this. When true released his board he called it true's NES / SNES Replay Device. I subsequently hacked together a Lego case and put it on ROB and dubbed it ROBBerry Pi. Then, due to being frazzled because of last-minute issues and being in front of 60,000 people I proceeded to do an absolutely horrible job of introducing who TASVideos was, who I was, and what the name of the bot was. Later, GDQMonitor and Masterjun's SMW executes arbitrary code submission both referred to the combination of true's replay board, the Pi, and ROB as "TASBot". (As an aside, there was previously an unrelated project named TASBOT but no new development appears to have happened on it in over a year.) TASBot as a "person" has become something far larger than I ever imagined. There's fanfic out there about GDQMonitor (apparently a girl) and TASBot having an ongoing relationship. The SDA community seems to refer to TASBot about the same way the Nico Nico Douga community references TAS-san (TASさん, known as "Mr. TAS"). I know true has never particularly felt comfortable with calling his board "TASBot" and at this point I think the name transcends any particular replay device. I've come to think of TASBot as the combination of ROB holding a controller or board and participating in his favorite pastime, playing games perfectly in front of a TV and a loving audience. What could be better? A.C. ******

I'd like to chime in on a couple of points. As noted, we definitely ran into interference during the Gradius run. There were a lot of factors that went into that but I think the biggest issue is that the microphone wires were draped over the top of the controller cable and we weren't on any kind of "safe" surface at all (ROB was sitting on a flimsy stool). During the bonus stream we put everything on a rolling metal cart and while the cart was way too large it served the purpose very well. We had no issues syncing Zelda II and I'm confident we can overcome the EMI problems, or at least test for them in different environments prior to the marathon to know what to expect. I hope to get a FF1 cart this week to start initial testing. Regarding the run length, when TheAxeMan and I started discussing this run the submission window had not yet opened but seeing what's going on with arguments over Final Fantasy Tactics getting in I'm now a little less convinced that *any* Final Fantasy game will make it in this year. I now feel that the only way to present this properly is as part of a larger block where we kick this off on one screen and let it play while we move on to something else and come back to it at the end. For that purpose, perhaps the white mage run / a run with the boss punchline would be more suitable. I will be making a separate post to discuss overall TASVideos involvement at AGDQ2015 as well as my own involvement at the marathon (or lack thereof depending on available funds and whether I decide to try doing fundraising, but I digress). I'd love to see Final Fantasy make it in but I want to make sure we offer Mike and team a reasonable selection of TAS options to pick from depending on how full the schedule ends up being by September 3rd. Thanks for the feedback everyone, A.C. ******

I set up a clean Windows XP 32-bit instance and tried loading my working TAS and starting from there. No go. It is not possible to ever quit and restart once you start TASing the game - no matter how much you want it to work, the movie file will become corrupt and effort will be lost. I will make one final, desperate attempt to TAS Lynx Joust in a single sitting before giving up. I hope that one day development will resume or the Lynx core will end up in BizHawk. A.C. ******

This run surprised me - there's no denying that this is a somewhat simple game ruleset (consisting of "make everything a target color by jumping on it while avoiding enemies") but I was entertained by how this played out. Had it been 40 minutes I don't think I would have been able to vote Yes but as it is I think this is actually eligible for the Moons tier. Nice run. I'm very amused by how the name changes in the Thanks to section of the description. I raffled off my second NES controller cable but hopefully true can console verify this one. I'll get free time at some point this year so perhaps I'll console verify this myself at some point. Great job! A.C. ******

After a substantial delay, I finally have the address to send the raffle prize out to the winner. Here's their fabulous prize package: More pictures can be found in the album I used for this project. I'm sending the following: - The Serial #1 NES/SNES replay board from true with one assembled NES controller cable - The N64 board from micro500 with one assembled N64 controller cable - Spare pinheaders to make additional cables - The "upper" grey Lego assembly which ROB uses to hold the replay board, still in one piece - The not-as-pristine-as-I-had-hoped ROB - A new-in-box Raspberry Pi (256 MB rev 1 Model B) I had not originally intended to donate a Raspberry Pi, but honestly, I didn't need this extra one and I wanted to make the raffle prize a bit sweeter. I had purchased a ROB specifically to give away as the raffle prize but when it showed up it was not as pristine as it was advertised. After a bit of work I got ROB functioning smoothly and I used NOVUS to clean up the plastic with the only thing I couldn't easily fix being the "telephone cord" on the back that's a bit stretched out. Otherwise, I'm extremely happy with how everything turned out. To sweeten the pot even further, micro500 also donated his N64 bot that he used for the Mario Kart 64 verifications along with the cable. I'll pester micro500 to get the replay code for this. The only remaining hurdle is actually a fairly silly one - I need to find enough packing material to ensure that Rob doesn't show up with a broken neck. :) Thanks again to everyone for the support. I don't know when the next *GDQ event I'll attend will be but I plan to continue to participate in future marathons and I'll post in this thread at least one more time when the Triforce gauntlets raffle prize that my wife is knitting are ready to send out. Until next time, A.C. ******

I watched before reading any submission notes. I found this to be interesting because I didn't realize Atari 2600 graphics could be this good. The fly-in at the beginning looked genuinely 3D. It's over quick, sure, but I was entertained. Yes vote. A.C. ******

No, I use frame-advance! I just checked the speed of my running: on Mupen64's 10% speed I run faster than on Bizhawk's 12% speed, but on normal speed I run the same speed on both emulators! I just need to get accustomed!
If you're using frame advance, why would play back speed even matter? >.>
I know it does matter in at least bizhawk. I found when I was doing my Mega Man run that having the emulator set to a lower speed would cause a delay between frames when frame advance was used.
That's interesting. Question, though - why would you use slowdown? I do admit that there are some cases where frame advance is too slow and holding down the frame advance and going 100% speed is too fast but that seems like an atypical situation, not an all the time thing. This is probably the wrong place to be discussing emulator behavior, though. :) A.C. ******

I tried BizHawk, but TASing this game is so confusing: the sounds are smashed and repeats for 4 seconds (on 12% as I need)!
As much as it will feel like you will never, ever be done with the TAS when frame-advancing, this is the only way to ensure that the input is optimal. It can take a while to get used to it (I know it took me a long time), but it will have a significant impact. I also recommend going with BizHawk. While the N64 support does have some challenges the framework around it is worth it. If you have any specific bugs definitely post about it in the BizHawk thread. Lastly, chin up - TASVideos has extremely high standards. I've submitted a run and had it rejected for not being as optimal as it needed to be and it wasn't fun but it goaded me on to do better the next time. Thanks for your work on this and best of luck! Don't restart. Finish the current version and then start on a v2. It takes basically the same amount of time, but you learn more things from the endgame that you can use in your next version; you might get more feedback from the outside that reveals further improvements by publishing; publication renews interest and might inspire others to try to TAS the game; and this way we reduce the risk of nothing being published at all due to redoing burning you out.
I'm in favor of not restarting, but for very different reasons. One thing to keep in mind about our stated goal of lowest in-game turns is that anything that happens before turn 2,000 is malleable - while we don't want them to look sloppy, we have a lot more freedom than we do on the turns after 2,000 until the end of the run. What makes this look sloppy in ais523's eyes is that we were standing right next to two leashes (although we did not know that at the time) and we spent more time than needed reading spellbooks because we should have been a faster polyform (a reasonable statement). Having said that, I seem to recall that we were reading the spellbooks to kill time while burning through the RNG so that we had more favorable results after that point, and even if we weren't actively planning on that at the time it's a very plausible excuse. :) I'd also say that while we know now that there were two leashes there the entire time it's not something that I think any audience would take us to task over - whether we mention it or not is a debate for later, but simply picking up two leashes (either those two or others) in some interesting way later could be just as entertaining. As it stands now we'll likely have "turns to burn" prior to turn 2,000 anyway because we were so careful with our turns earlier so I suspect this will all be a moot point. As far as starting over / someone else doing a TAS, I suspect that this particular effort will never be attempted by anyone ever again. If we do the turns after 2,000 correctly, it will not be possible to beat the same category unless a substantial new trick is discovered, which is unlikely given the time ais523 and others have spent scouring the source code (a rare privilege not often experienced when working on a speedrun). I would definitely encourage others to try if they want to, of course; I have released the framework we're using as open source alongside ais523's modifications to NetHack (nethack-tas-tools) but I don't see it as being very likely. It's perhaps more probable if a late-game strategy is discovered and the input up to that point is preserved, I suppose. At any rate, those are my thoughts - I definitely think we should keep going. :) A.C. ******

Do I even want to know what you are doing? I haven't played enough Nethack to know if I should be scared for the game or not. Still, it's great seeing how broke things have been so far.
As always, the best resource is the git repository: https://gitorious.org/nethack-tas-tools/mainline The two documents of interest are the t2000timings.txt file and the turnbyturn.txt file. Expect updates in these two documents as we alter the turn 2000 plan and make further progress. Enjoy, A.C. ******

What ais523 said. :) I'm in a "crunch time" at work but can make some time short-term. One of the scheduling challenges for ais523 and I is the fact that we're 7 to 8 timezones apart (depending on DST; ais523 is in the UK and I am in California). As ais523 noted, the egg setup is the only thing we haven't "rehearsed" (tried in wizard mode with all of the benefits thereof). There's plenty of other things we've rehearsed that we'll have to remember how we did when it comes time to do it the "right" way outside of wizmode but I think we'll be OK. We're still tracking for a 2015 completion date, although that'll be at risk of slipping if we don't start making progress soon. Thanks for the continued interest! A.C. ******
