Yes guys, recently I thought about adding rerecording to dosbox, at least to annoy natt into implementing doshawk one way or another already <_<

This thread was used to formulate the rule about arcade continues: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10837 Note how the rule is posted alongside cheat/code rules. And how they all have this exception saying they are not strict. If they are considered to improve the gameplay without giving the player unfair advantage, they are allowed. Also see how DarkKobold explicitly states that the rule about arcade continues should have exceptions on a case-by-case basis. This is in line with what I mentioned above. And to clarify, DK was a senior judge back then, and he handled the Metal Slug X submission that spawned that rule in the first place. So this can serve as a precedent ruling. As for arcade games that have limited continues (which might somewhat contradict the whole nature of arcade machines being a way to pull money out of you), I think we need just judge them by the same principle that can justify the use of continues. If the game doesn't become easier as a result, they may be allowed.

I have started work on a 2P TAS for Arcade Double Dragon, and am wondering if there are any restrictions on use of multiple credits? Example: I am considering a run where I intentionally keep a character dead for certain sections of game, and use a continue to bring them back (goal being lag reduction in places where the second player isn't adding any value) I know intentional deaths are allowed, but is a TAS considered acceptable if the fastest strategy requires using multiple credits/continues?
To finally answer this, such use of credits won't add any extra value to the gameplay, and it'd rely on a resource that's principally infinite. It means you'd use a cheat-like technique without introducing any restrictions that might justify it. It'd only save some lag frames. Doesn't sound exceptionally useful really, at lest not for a viewer. So to play safe, I'd advice you to avoid any extra credits. Lives are fine though, you can trade them as needed, as long as you don't "buy" new lives. PS: DrD2k9 appears to answer this in the exact same manner as I did now, having looked 7 years back. Nice job!

Yeah the problem here is that continues are infinite for most arcade games. The case when they are limited isn't mentioned though. I feel that we need to clarify this part.

If all this trick involves is basic wall clipping, and the game just happens to cut down hours of play through this due to silly flaws, it doesn't sound like a game breaking glitch. I think it doesn't need a label. About a future run that'd avoid this tech, it might be too boring to get into Moons, and also unvaultable as a goal. So your best bet is making something that is a full completion run instead of "no wall clips", and it also may be allowed to have those wall clips.

Virtualpad doesn't work with tastudio. To enter analog inputs, hold the left mouse button while in analog editing mode and drag the mouse up or down. Analog editing mode can be added to other rows if you shift-click or ctlr-click on them while some cell is in that mode, then you'll be able to edit them all at once. Also all 4 arrow keys do things. Finally, once analog value is set, you can exit analog editing mode and draw the value of that cell by dragging the mouse. If you need more info on what's possible, I can look at the code. I admit that having zero documentation on our control schemes is a weak spot. At least we have this forum.

Doubleclick loads the branch, and then there are buttons (with tooltips on what they do), as well as rightclick menu once you have a branch selected. Note that branches will remember markers (which you put with doubleclick on the frame column of input roll) and restore them on branch load. To untie markers from branches, uncheck "Bind markers to input" in the main tastudio menu. There's an exhaustive manual on fceux's taseditor, that inspired tastudio and has a lot of similar features. But for quick questions, it's more efficient to simply ask here.

If you launch command prompt and invoke the uploader from there, it won't close. This will allow to at least read the message if there's any.

Added the clause to publisher guidelines. We can now start relabeling the ones that are relevant.

So here's info we've gathered about SMB3 100% and SMA4SMB3 100%. The SMB3 game is agnostic to the amount of levels you beat. No indication or reward for beating all the levels. No total count of beaten levels or levels left to beat. Agnostic. But the run still aims exactly for "all levels" completion, and it beats all levels that can be beaten, without skipping any one that can be skipped. Things that are still not visited don't make sense to visit:
Tompa on IRC wrote:
Toad Houses and the Roulettes are skipped because you can't play them all in a 100% run, because of lack of Hammer items. N-cards are recieved ever 80K points and you can get endless of them, so no point in those.
But the manual doesn't mention anything about beating all the levels either. So I have to admit that it's an arbitrary goal, and it doesn't sound vaultable. Of course it doesn't matter, since the run is in Moons and has great rating. The 2 vaultable goals for this game seem to be "game end glitch" and "warpless". On IRC we also came to agreement that whenever we're talking about "all X", we need to check whether the game shows the resulting number anywhere. For example, in SMW it show that you've used 96 exits. In such cases we put "all 96 exits" in the label. But when the game doesn't show that number anywhere, we simply go with "all X", "all levels" in the case of SMB3. On the other hand, SMA4SMB3 has rewards for completing all levels. This includes quite a few things, like getting a PERFECT CLEAR screen for each world. Since the game explicitly cares, it is a valid full completion goal for it. But while the level count is shown as 90, it was reported that to get Perfect Clear rewards, you need to beat all the extra levels, overall the same levels as in SMB3. So putting "all 90 levels" wouldn't be accurate. But anyway, the game gives special rewards for achieving this goal, so I believe we can label it as 100%. But it is still also "all levels". So maybe we should use the same "all levels" label between all the SMB3 ports where this applies?

Here's what I've been thinking of. #4657: Lord_Tom & Tompa's NES Super Mario Bros. 3 "100%" in 1:04:36.90 defines the goal as: 1. All regular levels entered and completed 2. All World-Map Hammer Brother and Pirahna Plant levels completed 3. All World-8 Auto-Scrollers and Hand levels completed Regular levels are obviously fixed in count. World-8 Auto-Scrollers and Hand levels, I don't know what they are. But what is Hammer Brother and Pirahna Plant levels? Are they fixed in count?

I missed when we officially agreed on the definition of "iconic enough". You see, I can't add "X enough" to the publisher guidelines talking about branches, because it would require a clear borderline, like I already said. It can't be handled by asking others every time. And no rule can be enforced if it's not idiot-proof.

What about [2835] NES Super Mario Bros. 3 "all levels" by Lord_Tom & Tompa in 1:04:36.90? It seems the actual goal of the run is "all levels". But what's the amount of levels there?
