If I volunteer to host all pictures of minors posted from this point on on my own host(s), will anything change, or we'll still cower in fear at the slightest thought that some authority somewhere is watching for us to do something remotely inappropriate to shut us down without warning or formal requests?

Well, maybe you should also protect him from the practices of using ROMs to create TASes, as well as reading these forums which may contain materials offensive for minors, including profanities which Patryk himself has used quite liberally on IRC, then? You are not his parent, and there has to be a limit to your parenting of unrelated minors.

So, as far as I'm aware, Brushy did not remove the picture as per any of the laws. Which is good because it would be following the letter of the law for no sane reason, and that's a big no-no. Nach has already issued bans to people referencing fansub trackers and whatnot on IRC, that's harsh enough, we don't need any more paranoia-induced law enforcement. It should also be pointed out that Brushy is in a position to make that kind of call, should be able to defend it, and it's up to the senior staff members to decide whether he did a good job with it. The basis for this decision has been a strong moral stance which I, as more of a libertarian, lack (and negligence is the flip side of libertarianism in vast majority of real-world scenarios). I don't share the same stance, but since in this case it was good intention that caused the strong decision, and not just flexing muscles for fun or showing who's the boss, I have no strong moral ground to oppose it: I can't speak for Patryk1023 whether he is conscious enough to post his photos on a public forum, but then again I can't speak for anybody else either, regardless of the age. Age may give a general picture of what to expect, but on a case-by-case basis it's useless. There are written norms and then there are actual people in actual situations that go beyond that. In short, I am of the opinion that forcefully removing a photo is a measure that ideally should not happen, but since we are dealing with a sensitive situation, it should at least be discussed with the poster in private. Which, by the way, was what Brushy intended to do. How did it go?

Yeah, I think I read something like that in the Old Testament, and it's likely not to be the first written work to note that kind of behavior too.

X+X2 has another very important factor going for it: both games are finished at the exact same time.

Maybe we should have a poll? I really like Hourglass, and there seems to be no notable software by this name (surprisingly!). After all stuff like LAME didn't get lost in obscurity even though its name was truly ubiquitous. There was another suggestion on the first page, WinTAGE (Windows Tool-Assisted Gaming Environment), which was also cool, but clearly not as cool as Hourglass.

VVVVVV actually has some damn optimized unassisted runs recorded, and considering the simplicity of its engine I'm not at all sure they are improvable by that much. You should check them out if you haven't.

I must conclude this is a severe case of selective attention bias that has rendered you blind to every other controversial submission for the two years you've been here. Arguments like this have happened many, many times before. Cases when Japanese authors were involved? This and the OoT one (and also that one when FractalFusion submitted a Japanese dude's movie without his explicit permission). Americans and Europeans were shafted in all other instances, so next time you should probably claim the staff is unpatriotic. Or maybe, you know, research the subject a bit before you make yourself look stupid.

Damn right! I haven't realized it at first, but TASvideos is indeed racist. If you look at the goombas in the top-left corner, you'll notice that their skin is brown! And Mario is going to stomp on them! Also note that, while SDA backgrounds are mostly black, TASVideos's are white or very light blue, indicating white supremacy.

Your call. Such a list would definitely be useful to an extent (to update/revise Wiki: ListOfIdeas, for one), and "obviously not a good choice" entries could be pruned manually afterwards.

Well, if you already have that script, why not? It's better than nothing.

AnS' articles were almost unachievable via random googling, only my WikiPedia article gathered all links to them. So I can hardly say he was really popularising TAS. He just geve SOME info in SOME good articles. but the main concept of TASing stayed almost unnoticed. But having the actual Russian branch we can give some explanations of HOW TO TAS, submit & encode. It was my desire as you know.
AnS didn't only write articles, he also discussed the topic on forums he visited. It's not his fault not many people were interested: it's a very niche concept worldwide, but even more so in our country. Also, not sure what you mean by the main concept of TASing staying unnoticed.

moozooh, what do you think?
I don't think it's warranted. On my memory, TASVideos forums have had an impressive total of twelve native Russian speakers registered (+1 IRC-only dude), of which only four had used the forum for more than 10 posts and were good enough at English to not require any further assistance: AnS, Lazy_Zefiris (where has he gone, anyway? I guess the military got him :o), you, and myself. See, the big goal is to become a part of the community, but to do that you need to be able to post in English. We already have Russian forums of our own (like Emu-Russia), so simply relocating some of the Russian-language discussion here achieves very little aside from maybe somebody other than AnS being able to shed some firsthand experience on important issues like rules and submission process. He has always been the main advocate of TASing on Russian emulation-related resources. I, on the other hand, visit them about once a year, but am way more active here. AnS has actually done a good body of work explaining and popularizing the concept of TASing on certain Russian emulation and ROM-hacking resources, but most Russians even remotely interested are traditionally reluctant to blend into foreign communities without forming at least some kind of a diaspora that would let them feel comfortable. It's the same with SDA. Those who were willing to become a part of the community have done so never having used the Russian boards which has close to zero traffic anyway. This is considering the fact that there's way more interaction involved between an author willing to submit a run and the site's staff due to the specifics of their submission process, so naturally there should have been higher activity. I've had more activity in my inbox from some Russian guys whom I had to relay relevant information to on behalf of Mike. Anyway, in case you create something I can write an announcement post anytime. No big deal. The proper name would then be Русскоязычный форум.

As the unsuspecting viewer cares even less about three frames than I do, I would recommend the preceding movie in favor of this one due to being more pleasing to the eye, not to mention comprehensible. Thus, no.

I don't think of any reason why a short dash should be preferred aside from matching a ROM's name. Normally there would be a colon, or at least a long/medium dash.

Unfortunately those wasted shots are unavoidable as explained earlier on this page. It's done so that the Spreader shoots a constant stream of bullets as opposed do dispersed bursts, and is actually very hard to achieve. Edit: Gah, beat by Kirkq.

Ok, here's a recap. A group of Japanese TASers have improved the previous run by three frames, one frame per instance. However, the camera work in their run wasn't received well at all due to annoying zooming and angle choices making it nearly impossible to tell what was going on. The argument presented by those who are NOT in favor of this run obsoleting the previous is that the camera work makes this movie so much less entertaining three frames can't possibly make up for that. Thus, considering it was a stylistic choice and not a prerequisite for those frames to be saved, it was suggested the authors fix it instead. The arguments presented by those who ARE in favor of this run obsoleting the previous, boil down to three things: 1) rejecting this submission would be rude to the authors as they have exerted much effort making it; 2) this is a speedrun site, entertainment doesn't matter; 3) you have to TAS SM64 to be able to vote no (voting yes, however, is perfectly alright), and people doing that are idiots.

Dude, by your logic you shouldn't vote unless you are a politician yourself.
