I purchased an Xbox 360 some time ago mainly because of a bunch of games not available for Windows (and partially also because I'm getting tired of the instability of most Windows games). So now I have purchased and played many of the games I wanted to play and I'm currently in the situation where I actually don't have any games for the Xbox 360 to play. I'm looking for suggestions on what to try next, iow. the best Xbox 360 games ever.
To give a picture of what I like, these are the better games I have played so far: Gears of War 1 and 2, Eternal Sonata, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Fable 2, Infinite Undiscovery, Alan Wake. I also have FF XIII, but didn't like it too much (I think Square Enix has lost the ball years ago; I haven't liked any of their games in the past half decade).
Games of similar genres you don't need to suggest (because I have them for Windows), and which I have also liked: Fable, Oblivion, Fallout 3, four Princes of Persia (sands of time, warrior within, two thrones, prince of persia (2008)), Mass Effect, Batman: Arkham asylum, The Last Remnant.
While the lists above are quite RPG-heavy, I'm open to any genre, really.
But don't bother with first-person shooters. I can't play them with a gamepad, no matter how great the game might otherwise be. (The closest thing I can manage are games similar to Gears of War.)

I tried Lost Odyssey, just couldn't get into the characters. Blue Dragon is an interesting combination of Final Fantasy + Dragon Ball Z, but haven't gotten a chance to play through it.
Assasin's Creed is good, but long-winded speeches drive me insane.
Also, agreed, I haven't enjoyed a Final Fantasy since 10.

Mirror's Edge, Dead Rising (the sequel is probably much better), Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing with Banjo-Kazooie, Tekken 6, Perfect Dark XBLA and Trials HD.

Based on those JRPGs you listed, I will suggest Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata. On another note though, I've played Star Ocean: The Last Hope and I am currently playing through Final Fantasy XIII and I can't decide which has the worser writing. I might give the award to the former, and the latter can receive the award for worst hairstyles in a JRPG. I don't even know why I bother with these kinds of games anymore. JRPGs aren't what they used to be.
As for JRPGs, I can very much suggest the Tales series on imported Playstation systems.
They aren't the best games in the world, but the best JRPGs I've seen in recent years.
(Yes, I do realize how this totally has something to do with the Xbox 360)

The highlights from my collection:
- Assassin's Creed (I and II): If you're into the whole "Christianity is a conspiracy / Dan Brown" thing, this is a fun series.
- Blue Dragon: The characters were sort of insipid, but I liked the story.
- Bioshock: Unique, atmospheric, detailed, and addicting.
- Brütal Legend: If you like Jack Black / any kind of metal, you should try this game out. There are some parts of the game that I sort of disliked, but it's still worth playing.
- Dante's Inferno: A God of War clone, and not really anything like the original work, but still epic and fun.
- The Orange Box: Half-Life 2 and Portal. 'Nuff said.
- Resident Evil 5: ONLY if you liked RE4. If not I wouldn't bother. I found RE5 quite fun but not as good as 4.
- Star Ocean: The Last Hope: Since I'm a completionist, I have a love/hate relationship with this game. If you want all the Battle Trophies, be prepared to sink several hundreds of hours into this.
XBLA
- Braid: A puzzle game. For me this was challenging, but I can't really speak for those who are puzzle game veterans... some say the game is pretentious, but I've seen it otherwise. I know this isn't 360 exclusive but I thought I'd mention it.
- LIMBO: Sort of like Braid, but the puzzles are easier and the game is much darker (literally and figuratively).
- Super Meat Boy: Again, not 360 exclusive, but definitely worth a mention. Ridiculously hard platforming but mercifully short levels make for a fun game that you can pick up and play whenever. Also many references to "retro" games (most of which us TAS gamers are familiar with) and current internet memes.
- LIMBO: Sort of like Braid, but the puzzles are easier and the game is much darker (literally and figuratively).
Seconding the LIMBO suggestion. The game is fun.
Also, if you like bullet hell shooters, play Deathsmiles. THE JAPANESE VERSION. The US version unfortunately got stripped of the lag, making it MUCH harder. Thanks Cave. Love you too.
And last, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Been liking what I see, but really only play if you can play in HD. The game is a lot harder to play in SD...at least for me.

I listed Eternal Sonata in my original post. As for Tales of Vesperia, I'd love to get my hands on it, but it's RIDICULOUSLY priced (for example at play.com you can get a used version for a "mere" 143 euros, and new at 200 euros; I'm not paying that kind of money for a 3-years-old game that would normally cost about 20 or 30 euros at this point).

Shadow Complex from XBLA. It's ridiculously long for an XBLA game and it's one of the best games for the 360 period. In case you're not familiar with it, it's a Super Metroid clone with a more realistic (which is perhaps not the best word to describe the game in general) and modern theme.
Also from XBLA, Trials HD (it's really more like a puzzle than a racing game) and Mega Man 9. Haven't played 10 but I hear it's not as fun.
From the God of War genre, I second Dante's Inferno. I also enjoyed Bayonetta and Ninja Gaiden II but for me, Dante's Inferno was the best one of the three.
Mirror's Edge was fun but really short and had too many gunfights towards the end.
Also, you didn't mention Mass Effect 2. In case you haven't played it, it's way WAY better than ME1, although I'm not sure if I just felt that because of my expectations for ME1 were so high and for ME2 so low. As long as you don't expect anything resembling an RPG and like good 3rd person action, ME2 is great.

Noted! Thanks for pointing this out. I tend to try to use the more "correct" version of a word even if a misuse has been used to the point of acceptance (sort of like empathic vs. empathetic).
Also, yeah, I forgot about MM9 and MM10. As mentioned, 9 is a bit better but they're both REALLY well done.

Super Meat Boy!
This game is the most awesomest game I've played in a long long time. It's not Xbox exclusive, and I've been playing it on my PC using Steam, but I know it exists on Xbox.
In short it's a great and HARD platformer, where all you do is run and jump. Basically :)
Well, I can really recommend this to anyone interested in a game challenge.
Also, agreed, I haven't enjoyed a Final Fantasy since 10.
I have a theory: Anything from Square Enix where Nobuo Uematsu was involved is great, anything where Uematsu was not involved sucks.
(Although FF XIV breaks this theory badly.)
I have a similar theory for Nintendo and Yamauchi/Iwata.
Ever since Iwata took over their games seem to have been lacking that little bit of extra depth that I enjoyed so much.

Most of the Rpg's for this system are crap. Especially infinite Undiscovery. That game, oh that game.Lost Odyssey on the other hand was Brilliantly done, the makers out did themselves. Fallout New vegas is good too. you should get that.

Yeah, it's such a close clone that many times I forget I'm actually not playing a God of War game. (Yeah, guess what is one of the games I bought recently... :P )

Did you get EDF 2017? It's pretty cheap and if you have a friend to play it with, it's so much fun. There's nothing like shooting giant alien ants and spiders and robots with ridiculous weaponry and big explosions. It's all arcade and it's all so so much fun. Everything is fun about this game and I really urge everyone to try it.

"Earth Defense Force 2017 holds a Game Rankings score of 70.67%."
Not that it's impossible for me to disagree with the average review (in fact, that's not even extremely rare), but often they are rightish...
and if you have a friend to play it with, it's so much fun.

All of these generally negative reviews don't take in the camp or fun factor at all. The graphics are okay, they do the what they were designed to do. Also, I don't see how this game needs any more features. You've got your choice of two guns (initially you start with an assault rifle and a rocket launcher) and just shoot the hell out of the enemies. That's basically all there is to the game, but it's just so much fun, escpecially when there are weapon drops, so you get new weapons all the time! Also, the poor voice acting makes the game even more fun, as it is hilarious. Just listen to some of it on Youtube and try not to laugh.
Does EDF 2017 have an actual storyline, or is it just a melee-type game, where you just kill enemies and more enemies, without actually advancing any kind of plot and progress in the story?

I think FF versus XIII seems interesting because it's futuristic, so it reminds of FFVIII.
