This is a better version of previous run I made before. 51 drawings on the Calculations X 100 mode were replaced by new ones. No change on Brain Age Check mode.

Spoiler warning

This submission text tells you what I draw. I recommend you not to read it before watching the movie!

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: desmume-0.9.6
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Is a demonstration
  • Manipulates luck
  • Uses game restart sequence
Note: The replay is not quite deterministic. If the replay runs desync,
1, Save at frame 117 during playing the movie.
2, Load the savestate slot.
3, Play the movie from beggining again and it will run well.

About the game

Have you ever had an interest in art or wanted to learn how to draw? Well now you can with the Brain Age software for the Nintendo DS system. Brain Age is a fun, interactive, and portable training software that will teach you how to draw, much as you would learn in Calculations X 100.
Hehe, I told a lie. The real description is as follows.
Brain Age is a puzzle game to exercise your brain a little each day. It is inspired by the research of Professor Ryuta Kawashima. You will play a variety of puzzles to train your brain. Although there has been controversy over the scientific effectiveness of the game in keeping your brain active, the game got very popular.

About the run

This run shows you how you can abuse the number recognition program by secretly drawing the number answer in each picture. You can see random characters on Brain Age Check mode, and video game stuff on calculations X 100 mode. The latter mode, the run ignores the game time and fails to launch a rocket. This time, it takes 5 minutes to solve the entire math problem, and it is slower than the previous run. This is because the run aims to be as entertaining as possible.

Examples of how to abuse the recognition program

The entire point was to draw stuff just from Nintendo's first-party games. Or was that a *whoosh* moment?
Of course I got the point, but I was displeased with said point.

Sonic still isn't a first party character. Sega made the character, and allowed Nintendo to use the character in Brawl via a license. Such a thing happens often. In fact, it happened the other way around with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, as Sega developed and published it (except in Japan where Nintendo published it for some reason).

However, how do we treat the old run and this one then?
Simple. Either this one is deemed more entertaining than the previous and it obsoletes it. Or this one is rejected for failing to live up to the previous movie.

Well, then I will vote no for this one because I enjoyed more the previous submission. This is just a matter of prefering classical greek art over hellenistic greek art as a showcase (that is, considering that too much detail distracts from the subject matter).

Excellent movie! Loved the new drawings. Of course, I couldn't help but notice you forgot to include [insert character here]. (Banjo and Kazooie?) I don't really get why this and the old run can't just exist alongside, though. They're both playarounds and are pretty equal as far as entertainment goes. I think that's also best for people coming to look for the old video because they know it's got [insert character here] (I can tell there's probably going to be a lot of debate on this issue.)

Of course, the old run isn't going to be removed from the site; it (and its encode) will still be reachable by seeing which movie this movie obsoleted. Not that I'm taking a stance on this either way. I don't feel strongly.

Yes vote - while it's true that this run is not as fast as the first run it's still fast enough that I had trouble making out what some of the pictures were before the next one came up (and i only regret that because some of the pictures were truly amazing given the constraints involved). I'm hoping someone can post screenshots of all of the completed pictures at some point. This is clearly a demonstration run and not a run that aims for the fastest speed as most speedruns do. Based on that characteristic the completion speed is not an appropriate metric when considering obsoleting the last run. I feel that both runs have their own merits as works of art and should stand side-by-side but for the moment the site doesn't have a great way to organize that. I think the author's suggestion of making this a separate branch is the best solution based on the site's current structure. Great job - this was perfect lunch break entertainment! A.C. ******

I feel like this run is better on account of the Kanto drawing alone. However, that's not a good enough reason to vote Yes for this. This was pretty amazing, but it did drag a bit. I'm quite impressed with the art, actually.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. I voted no, because I enjoyed the other movie more. I actually stopped watching this movie half-way through, I got bored. I don't find much interesting about a brain age run other than "Oh hey, it abuses the number recognition function" This, to me, is the same thing but longer.

Agreed with others. Brain Age is one of those games that are basically one shot wonders. The previous movie did a good job of demonstrating how faulty the number recognition can be, and did so at a faster clip. The art in this run is indeed many times more impressive, but that resulted in the movie dragging on a bit; as well, it seems functionally redundant since the point has been made already. That being said, well done with much technical merit! I wish the judges good luck in deciding what to do about this. (also, I am irked by the continued non-presence of a furret...)

The idea of being able to fool the game into thinking you're giving correct answers is nice, but to me not the main feature of this TAS. I really enjoy these recognizable pictures being drawn from scratch, and I probably wouldn't even be bored if it lasted twice as long. Voting yes!

Granted, I don't remember the previous movie too well, but this entertained me just as much if not more. Time be damned.

That was my favorite of the new ones too. Just ahead of the Home Run Contest. This is very good, just like the previous, and there's many great characters. I could throw in a few commissions as well if you're still working on this. (No Ryu, dammit. A pic from the run across the bridge with explosions scene, or a cast pic from one of the series. You could score bonus points with one of the cast in a transformation form from II, too, as the TAS didn't have time to show them off.) No designee from the Dragon Quest series, either. One of the bosses would be a good stand-in if you want something fairly complex, and a Metal Babble would be nifty. I think you had a slime in the last version. The only complaints are to the order.. at some point there's a few too many characters in a row, and the non-character drawings could be put more frequently for better interludes, and at the start there's a number of characters in static full-body poses. A dramatic shot or a face-centric shot, or a few more profiles would be great. But I'm nitpicking. A very good run, better than the previous but not the ultimate that is possible. At this point I would be interested most in replacing drawings that take too long, and would work towards having the time per-picture increase in general as the run goes along. I haven't timed each drawing yet, though. I would also recommend speeding up the initial entry, as the pictures in the main part of the run take longer now, or is it needed for luck-manipulation?

Yes. If I speed up the initial entry, I have to redo some problems whose answer is two-digit number.

That's actually why I think they should just be put up alongside each other: the other run is still going to be available anyway, except if it's obsoleted it'll be harder to find. Nevertheless, I think this movie is better than the old so if it's going to be either one then I say it should be this one.

Taking extra time for increased detail also gives more time to enjoy the artwork. This movie is an improvement.

If your going to make a first post, make it worth mentioning... I was a huge fan of the first vid and spread it around to many friends to see as well. We all found it cute and amusing to not only the game being abused to accept your pictures as correct answers, but also how nice the pictures were drawn complimenting characters and items of gaming. When I seen this new run I was kinda torn in a sense and a few others I showed it to felt the same. While the pictures do indeed look a lot better and more detailed, by 3 minutes into the video it was more of wondering what you were going to draw next vs. what you were actually accomplishing. It was like toward the end the original meaning of the video was lost to me seeing a video of someone drawing pictures in a game rather then the actual message of the game accepting your pictures as correct answers. When thinking about it more and discussing it with some friends in Vent the argument came up that anyone with artistic skill could accomplish this even further since all you would have to do in essence is make sure the number needed is represented in the picture as described. You almost get the feeling that another one of these will come along using other things from meme's, portraits or any other art style. This run should obsolete the old run since it does improve on the quality of the pictures being drawn but don't let it get to the point to where anyone can submit a entry for this game just out of the fact they drew other things and so forth. It would be like have manyl entry's for coloring a dinosaur because person A used different colors vs person B. I hope my post makes sense and sorry about the rant.

Wonderful, I voted yesterday, forgot to post, and now I don't remember what I voted. :( I was very entertained, so I'll just assume I voted Yes. I would say not to obsolete the current movie, though, because I think that one is more entertaining. I'd also like to add my hat to the "I'd love to see a run with non-Nintendo references" club.

Yus. Enjoyed the old one more (because the idea was still novel), but I respect the opinion of the author that this should obsolete his old work.

Voting Meh here =P Look, I know you got the drawing skills, but this version just isn't as entertaining as the old (and awarded) one, .. even with the "different ending", I think (of course not considering a No vote) that if you want to do an Art Academy version, you'll have to get a 100 new images to draw, because seeing the same as before was just less than expected ... So what can I say on the good side? Why do some people like it even better than the old (and awarded, ha) one? Amazing work on drawing, and tricking the game, this is what TAS is about, anyway, tricking the game into giving away the correct answers from odd entries .. +D Are you trying to get awarded DS TAS of Year twice in a row?? XD
