Yoshi's Story Any% TAS

  • EMULATOR -- Mupen 64 rerecording v2 record reset
When playing back this movie, be sure to go into the Mupen Save folder, and delete the ROM's .EEP file (aka Mupen's version of RAM) or else you will get a desynch. From what I now, this version of mupen may cause crashes on Linux, since the reset command doesn't work. Of note: This version of mupen resets the emulator itself, rather than just the ROM. If you see Mupen shut down and reload, be calm.
  • ROM – Yoshi's Story
  • COUNTRY -- USA
  • CRC -- E8D83723
PLUGINS --
  • video: Glide64 v0.7 ME SP8
  • sound: Jabo's DirectSound 1.6
  • input: TAS Input Plugin 0.6
  • RSP : RSP emulation Plugin
Note for encoders: I don't think synch is affected from using different plugins. I believe there's a version of Glide Napalm that emulates Yoshi Story perfectly, so all encodes should be used with the most recent version of that.

Goals

  • Aims for fastest time
  • Abuses programming errors in the game
  • Genre: Platformer
  • Uses a Game Restart Sequence
  • Eat lots of fruit fast
  • BE HAPPY!
Comments will come later. I'll add in the tricks + glitches, explain the acceleration, and give level-by-level explanations.

Baxter: This movie sat in the workbench for long enough. There is a known improvement, but inclusion of these improvements seems to take its time. Improvements to this submission can be made in a new submission.
The response on this movie has been very positive, and the quality of the run seems good; accepting.
sgrunt: After many failed attempts at encoding this, it looks like Lex and Ilari have succeeded. Therefore, publishing shortly.

Fixed a bit ;)
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

Instead of deleting the save file, move it so you won't lose progress aside from TASing.

I think I found a pretty large improvement (5-6 seconds) in the jungle hut. I am trying to record it, but I am having trouble with the emulator, so maybe I can just describe it. Basically, the entire level can be cleared by only leaving the main room 1 time. It goes like this: 1. Get the grape, bannana, watermelon, and grape like usual. The apple will be collected later. 2. Enter shy guy stilt room. 3. collect all the coins in room to get the secret melon. 4. turn all the shy guys into watermelons and eat 3 of them followed by the melon. Then get the 5 remaining 5 shy guy watermelons (this is important) 5. leave the hut and enter the main room again. 6. get the lone water melon and this should make a total of 6 in a row 7. heart appears and yoshi goes super 8. ground pound to turn the shy guys into watermelons 9. grab the lone apple 10. grab the fruits near gabon 11. use the super flower to launch into the big heart. 12. end the super launch by the apple (the first apple you would normally collect in this stage. 13. That is 30 fruits.. and you removed an entire transition.

I keep getting a desync everytime on P.2, sadly. Edit: yes, I do have the exact same settings as you, Comicalflop.

Really nice run, and the Glide Napalm sure improves the pleasure to watch it. Yes vote.
I am old enough to know better, but not enough to do it.

Voting no because you didn't save 8 more frames to sub 11:00.00.

I'm gonna try and make a test run of Hero's suggestion, to see if it's faster. Has anybody had any luck in making an encode yet?

I hope that saves 8 frames, then I'll change my vote to yes

It is apparently going to be a lot more than 8 frames.

well, it better end up on a minute sub! I'm joking, if that wasn't obvious, I haven't even watched the TAS yet (have never watched any on emulator so far)

Using the same plugins as mentioned in the submission text, it runs perfectly for me. No desynch for me. However, the video plugin "Glide64 v0.7 ME SP8" shows some imperfect graphics. At least I see some unwanted black lines in the background. (but I get 60 FPS with this plugin) Using the latest Glide64 plugin found here (http://www.emuxhaven.net/forums/showthread.php?7202-Napalm-WX-WIP-fixes) solves the problem. Now, I see perfect video. The only problem (my problem) is, my computer is slow and I can only see 30 FPS with this plugin. This version of the TAS run is good! I would vote yes for it. However, since there's a mention of a better run coming, I will just wait until I see that one before I vote.

For some reason, I just can't get this running. I got the mupen version that was linked in the submission. I believe I copied all the relevant files of the Glide64 plugin to the right directories. And I think I got an ok ROM. However, the game won't proceed past the very first splash screen. This is even before I try to run the movie.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
