Mega Man PC - the single worst game of the entire Mega Man series. Designer, programmer, graphics and sound were all produced by one man, Stephen Rozner. Here is a TAS. I'm... sorry?

The Order

Sonic is weak to dyno, volt is weak to sonic, and dyno is weak to volt. However, Volt is the only boss I use another boss weapon against. Also, dyno's stage has ants that can't be killed without sonic's weapon, so Sonic first!

The glitches

Perhaps not a glitch, but bosses have no invulnerability - this means they die, very, very fast to any weapon. I found one useless glitch in Wily's stage. If you die at the same time as a boss- before the camera restores to being focused on Mega Man, the camera focus movement gets saved, and loaded when you come back to life- thus, you end up visually inside a wall, but the game plays as normal - the level graphics are just offset.

FractalFusion: This game is either not emulated correctly, or not speed-throttled correctly, or the AVI dump cannot be produced correctly. The only result is an unwatchable movie. Thus, rejecting.

Nach: Being quite familiar with this game both on a 3x86 16 MHz, and on much later CPUs, this game looks like it's emulated properly to me. The speed-throttling is left up to the user to decide. This seems to be a decent TAS. However the game is utter garbage.

Not exactly: The fact that Dr Willy is now over a budget and he had to froget about an expensive new fortress and had to move to the suburbs, build a fence around and put a skull on the door so everyone knows it's his house (for the ones who didn't knew him he was so nice to put the "Dr. W" sign right over his mail box) add the fact that he has also a robot dog to guard his lawn in case Megaman showed up... and his 3 "robots" which seems VERY suspicious... "Sonicman" = Plumber guy, "Voltman" = Electrician, "Dynaman" = Butler living in the basement. Now if THAT'S not hilarious I don't know what it is...

I was able to watch the whole thing at 33%. I wasn't overly entertained, I was simply curious as to what the next boss/stage would be like. I think the game is horrible, but I can see why people would want it published (hard, nostalgia, etc.) I personally vote no, but the previous reasons could potentially bring more viewers/members to the forum, as well as entertaining those who could never beat it. I am going with a meh.

Serious question. Are you considering doing a TAS for the terrible brother of DOS Mega Man - DOS Mega Man 3? That's a much harder and longer game, but also features swimming!

While it was funny the first time, the fact that it runs horribly fast (like some NES game in FCEUX on fast-forward) means a no vote from me. Fast does not always equal good.

Okay, finally got to watch this... Am I the only one who feel pangs of nostalgia watching this? I never played this as a kid, but hearing the noises and seeing graphics like this make me wanna be a kid again. However, I'll hold out for a version that's speed throttled. This was no fun to watch.

I tried this game in DOSBox. It is like this by default with that too. With great difficulty, I can make it slow down in DOSBox (haven't managed to do that in JPC-RR, but Dacicus reported that he could get it to slow down). Clarification: "Great difficulty" meaning there is a key that slows down the speed, but it is so unresponsive, that it is very difficult to actually slow it down

ok, but i'm pretty sure no one played this game at this speed. i understand it is hard to emulate at a sane speed -- that is my point. we do not have the ability to emulate this game as it was intended to be played.

It's emulated well, especially considering the CPU speed the game was made for is arbitrary, considering this game would run at many different speeds on different machines. Who should decide which speed to use? "The emulator's default speed" is the most reasonable decision. The game shouldn't just not have a published TAS because it happens to run at different speeds on different machines. I watched the movie just fine, proving it's not unwatchable. A slower encode could be made for slower viewers. "Mr. TAS" played with ludicrous skill, which was entertaining. There were significantly more "yes"es than combined "no"s and "meh"s. I enjoyed this TAS more than many of the TASes I have seen on this site. Although I respect FractalFusion's ability to judge for this site, I disagree with his decision for this particular TAS. I'm just posting my thoughts here, and am not upset at all despite my concise writing style which could be interpreted as angry. I have no attachment to this TAS beyond the entertainment I received while watching it. I also don't think my views should be universal, despite not using "in my opinion" everywhere.

Isn't it possible to just find some sort of FPS (using common values like 60, 30, or whatever) which makes the game speed more or less sensible, then encode it at that rate?

I'd guess the "correct" CPU speed would be the standard non-turbo speed of 25 MHz, like most games that were made for fixed frequency settings.

That may be so, but that isn't definitive since many different PC CPUs were in use at the time. Also, the game still works. Who's to say what hardware it's to be played on?

It seems to be best played at 1 MIPS in DOSBox, which corresponds to a 286 6MHz CPU (0.9 MIPS). I'm actually quite puzzled how a 1990 game was designed for 1982 tech.

I agree with FF, for what it is worth. It is somewhat sad, because I had no idea it would look this fast until after it was submitted and an encode was made (JPCrr plays at 15% on my computer). Also, FF was in the right. No TAS that receives this much legitimate negative feedback should be accepted.

This is the problem with any non-throttled game. In the programmer's defense, Hi-Tech Expressions basically gave it to one poor dude to do the sound, graphics, and gameplay. I'd love to do an interview with Stephen Rozner, the guy who programmed the game. He may be able to fill in some of the pieces, such as how the hell Hi-Tech ever got the license. Note, the nethack TAS will have a similar issue, if not worse issue. Check out the WIPs. Granted, it is a far more loved game, so people will probably receive it better.

OK, so it's well-emulated... but wouldn't we be able to obsolete it when our cpus get faster? That's kind of my point... the game should look as if it were run the way it was intended as far as hardware goes. Also, I would definitely like to see a new TAS of this played at an "accurate" speed!

I strongly suspect that most appreciation of the NetHack TAS will be through reading the turn-by-turn action descriptions or by watching the run with frame advance. The encode will be practically useless except as a novelty. Fortunately, the turn-by-turn descriptions are quite entertaining!
