Sonic the Hedgehog 3 "Competition" by speedofsound92

  • Emulator Used - Gens11svn296
  • Genre: Platform

Main Priorities:

  • Aims for fastest in-game time
  • Abuses programming errors in the game

Level Comments:

I selected "Time Attack" mode because it allows you to exit the stage by pressing Start+B. I can exit the stage without having to wait for the time of the "FINISH" animation and it will still count the level completion time. This saves 10 seconds off this movie.

Azure Lake (04.87)

I found a way to improve the zipping glitch with the tree trunk with better pixelation. This time it sends Tails through the tree trunk for the second lap in a row (his speed needs to be <1E00). I skip the final lap by going over the goal post over the top of the screen and crossing it again when I fall back down.

Balloon Park (02.63)

When Tails is jumping up and he is within a certain distance near the platform where the goal post is, the goal post won't count a lap when he crosses it. This allows Tails to fly through the ceiling during the countdown. Jumping over the goal post is faster than spindashing through the level.

Chrome Gadget (17.93)

I found two new glitches: Tails stands at the edge of the platform when it is descending and he falls through the floor. Tails flies under the springboard and it zips him through the floor.

Desert Palace (07.53)

During the countdown I get a head start to skip the first lap completely.

Endless Mine (21.21)

I jump above the screen after breaking the rocks and land on the floor where the goal post is.

Suggested Screenshot:

Frame 1392, 3551, 3715, 4030

Final Comments:

Credit goes to nitsuja and mmarks for making a great movie of the Sonic 3 Competition levels.
Enjoy the movie!

This falls into the category of a WTF TAS. I liked it a lot. Yes vote!

Awesome! some of these glitches were known by me. I did not think they had more glitches in these areas. Really fast. I vote yes!

I wish I had more to say than "Meh." But that really sums it up for me.

This was ridiculously boring to me. There was absolutely nothing that screamed watch me. THIS is why there's an actual game called Sonic The Hedgehog 3 to TAS and not this poor excuse for a time trial. Virutally nothing to really watch and when there was, it was overly dull and repetitive and not in a good manner. I've seen far too many other racing titles that have been tas'd that have provided far more entertainment then this. I'm sorry, but this was a poor choice for a TAS, imho, and I had to vote No. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Oh wow, some new stuff in here I didn't know about! Chrome Gadget strat is really interesting, I wonder if it would work in real time... Only thing I'd improve is, wouldn't it be faster to just break the two rocks in Endless Mine rather than all three? Regardless, voting yes. About time this was optimised!

Thank you for the encode, antd! This movie doesn't sync in my version of Gens11, for some reason. I watched this and the previous version, and this is not as interesting to me, but it's definitely very polished. (Impressive rerecord count!) I can't say No to an improvement. Nice going!
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

I thought this was amazing. I found that glitch on Balloon Park for myself when I was 7 and I never knew there were any of the other levels (granted, I never looked online). Although even that glitch is built upon in this run. Chrome Gadget has to be my favorite of all. Seeing that level completely destroyed was awesome and it's like a revenge from childhood xD.

I think you should have used Grand Prix mode, as it displays your total time at the end. Here, you exit the levels after finishing so quickly that we have no chance to see what your completion time is. Voting Meh for that reason.

He just did it again! SpeedofSound92 keeps deleting his posts. He shares an IP address with another member of the community. I'd like to know why he is intentionally deleting his posts, when they contain nothing inflammatory. Additionally, I'd like to know why he has a shared IP with another member. This is bizarre behavior. And I hope it isn't for the reason I suspect.

Sorry I keep deleting my posts. I did not share my IP with anybody else. I was just thinking I souldn't have posted anything about making an improvement on this submission. I was afraid that if anybody knew that I found an improvement there would be more "No" votes and it would be rejected.

Known improvements are not generally grounds for rejection.

Except, none of your posts where about possible improvements...

I did make posts about a possible improvement on this run and kept deleting them. I'm not sure what you are referring to. The only other post I can think of that I made of was about the "suspicious behavior" you mentioned as well as the PM I sent you and I thought it was about me posting the improvement.

"Shares an IP address" means "has the same IP address as". You can't deliberately share an IP address with someone else unless you are an ISP or something. Btw, could someone explain this run? The submission text is not extremely explanatory and seems to assume that people already know what it's about.

but, then again is this suspicious enough to not warrant this run's publication? I saw the delete post, informing that he'd PM you. Strange, yes, but suspicious? Maybe he's deleting posts due to fear?
