An awful lawyer has thrown the Addams family out of their home, so it's time to kick his face into next week. This game is different from both the NES and SNES versions.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: VBA-RR v23.5 svn421
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Uses warps
  • Takes damage to save time

Comments

This run started when I found out that you can warp from the basement to the final level, by jumping and holding up at a certain spot. Although it may seem inconsistent, every spot that damage is taken has been tested to be faster than not taking damage, and vice versa. When you get behind the final boss, you can't jump, which is why I don't jump to start shooting him faster.

Possible Improvements

I can't think of any, I believe the route is optimal and my strategies are too. Although there may be a few frames of tight optimization, but I doubt it.
Just as a note, it might not look clean in some parts but the hit boxes are very big compared to the actual size of the obstacle.

Suggested Screenshots

Nahoc: Claimed for judging.
Nahoc: Quite a slow-paced run, but the audience seems to enjoy its short lenght and how the warp breaks the game. It is also well optimized. Accepting for publication.
Nahoc: Setting this to "delayed".
Nahoc: Updated the movie file. Setting this back to "accepted".

Guga: Processing...

"This run started when I found out that you can warp from the basement to the final level, by jumping and holding up at a certain spot. " This sounds like a cheat code, like the one for Super Metroid to get all of the items. I'd like to know more about this.

I believe that's where you go to the final level anyways. It only works when you are on the exact level of the barrels. I think it's more of a glitched warp than a cheat code.

Just curious, why was this version of VBA used instead of vba-v24m? In case you're worried about the above question affecting my vote, I won't vote for this submission. :)

Those suggested screenshots are really really reminscent of Super Mario Land 2, to the point where I wonder if the games use the same engine.

It's nifty to see that Ocean ended up making multiple Addams Family games with different gameplay. However, I don't really like this one. The gameplay has a slow pace, which only gets worse whenever the inevitable lag builds up. I couldn't even really tell that a warp had occurred... it just looked like you went through a door and then ended up at a boss fight. You look like you did a good job with this, but this version of Addams Family has a lot less appeal than the NES or SNES versions. I'm going with Meh.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

At the times when you take damage, is it not possible to take damage so you get pushed "frontwards" instead of backwards?

This game is too slow and the glitch isn't really cool. I couldn't tell that it wasn't supposed to happen. Also, the damage taking and the dodging looked bad, even though it seems optimal. Also, the lame music is definitely an off-putter. Out of all the Addams Family games, I don't think this warrants a place on TASVideos. I nearly fell asleep before it ended. I'm just glad it wasn't a full run =P Voting no because of bad game choice.

Nope, no matter what you do you go backwards.

I wasn't aware of this version until now.

I warp at the part where the barrels are, not the door before the boss fight.

This looks extremely sloppy. Of all the times you get hit, every one of them seems to slow you down a lot. Is it not faster to just avoid them then? Even the boss battle looks like it could be tightened.

I tested each obstacle as I said, and the obstacles that were faster to take damage I used. What do you see in the boss battle? I have to shoot once to trigger him to jump, otherwise I couldn't get to his back to kill him much faster.

The game is lame, but the run is short enough for me to vote yes.

That ghost looks like Kirby! However, that and the glitch itself were the only somewhat interesting parts of this run. It's not a good game for TASing, especially because of its poor quality audio, slow pace, and repetitive backgrounds and enemies. Voting No.

I see no reason for not voting yes. It's short enough that the poor gameplay doesn't drag on too long, and the glitch is interesting enough.

So far the votes have been quite mixed and this could be judged either way. Here is why I think that this TAS should be published: - Some say it's boring, I personally think it isn't that bad to watch. There are other movies on the site that are similar speed platformers (some that have been published recently). - It's only 1:43 long, so it's hard to argue that the movie is too long. - It's technically well done, although it seems sloppy. I spent time optimizing everything and tested which places were slower to take damage. - It should complete the trio of Nintendo Addams Family games with the NES and SNES.

Could you please name those movies you're thinking of?

I don't really see anything super-human, Kyman. A few hours after my post I tried doing the glitch on console and succeeded easily.

Short enough for its purpose, I'm ok with that.

I can't name any off the top of my head, but you would probably find some if you searched through all the platformer movies.

The points I just made and the submission text don't mention anything about the glitch being hard to do on console. EDIT: If you're looking for something blatantly super-human in the whole run, the boss fight is. There is a bit of luck manipulation involved in getting him to jump, and running under him requires very precise timing in order to not die. Then I start shooting at him every other frame from the first frame possible. Also, if it looks like I have a missed shot, it's from the boss not me.

If some people says that this TAS is boring, I think that is because this game is slow, repetitive (and boring in itself). Anyway, your TAS is a good TAS, you exploited the game, go as fast as you could. Yes for me.

As this isn't done on VBA-24m which is more accurate, can I request that this isn't published yet as I will redo it?
