I have this idea to make like an infographic or chart comparing the lengths of the cables from various controllers. You know how the NES controllers had super short cables and the XBOX360 have like 20ft cords. I think it would make a cool chart. Problem is I don't have any controllers other than xbox and gamecube. SO I was hoping some of you had a bunch of old consoles laying around and a tape measure so you can help me compile research on this topic. I looked through wiki but the cable length was not given. Looking for any consol at all but primarily Atari 2600 NES SNES Genesis PS1 PS2 PS3 and anything in between.

Well with PS3 the cords are depending on what length of USB cable you have, since they're wireless, but use USB cables to charge. I'm not aware of any "official" PS3 controllers that are wired (but wouldn't be surprised if there were). I could try to find most of the others, since I have a ton of different systems. Just can't right now.

That would be great, I would really appreciate that. Don't worry about Wireless I will factor that in somehow. I just need the older ones.

There's not, though they can all be used wired, with any usb cable.

While browsing for something unrelated, I happened to stumble across this video about controllers, which reminded me of this thread. It doesn't answer the original question, but I thought it was interesting nevertheless.

I always wrap my controller cords around my controllers to save space, so my cords aren't exactly straight. These are approximate measurements from the end of the controller to the start of the plug: NES: 7' 5.5" SNES: 7' 6.75" N64: 6' 2" GameCube: 6' 4" (unofficial third-party controller)

Be careful about wrapping the cords too tight! I always leave some slack where the cord meets the controller so that it comes out straight. Otherwise, over time, the wires will separate. I've lost a couple of controllers this way.

My PS2 controller cord is no longer possible to get straight, but it's about 240-250 centimeters (or 7'10'' - 8'2'')

I only have an unofficial larger one, since pretty much anything worked with the 2600. That one, however, is about 48 inches.

This is one that has to be seen to be believed. http://i.imgur.com/T3oiv.jpg The bottom one is a Turbografx-16 pad - measures 4', nearly perfectly (when stretched). The top is a Turbo Duo pad - which measures a rockin 4' 3". Possibly the smallest cords ever. I also measured my 3DO controller for you. 90" long.

That ginormous image makes the page really wide (over twice my horizontal screen resolution), making reading posts really awkward, requiring horizontal scrolling. Please post a smaller thumbnail and make it a link to the original image.

I'd like to see these length plotted against the average TV size at launch.

I hate wireless controllers! I want like 50ft controller cabbles with automatical rollers so you can like pull them out any length and then click them locked. That would be BOMB! And then you can just tug them and release and the controller will fly back in. Oh that would be money.

The famicom wires were short IIRC.

Only cause about a 1/3 of it was in the system itself.

The problem with wireless controllers is that they aren't truly wireless. For example, this one time I went to my friends house, I set up a webcam on my TV at home and took the my Xbox wireless controller to my friends house a couple of miles away, and the wireless controller did not work. Who would want a controller that you can't play at a friends house a couple of miles away? I don't.

Cool story, bro. I have no qualms about using a wireless controller. They work just the same as wired controllers, except they require lots and lots of batteries throughout their lifespan.

I don't have that experience. In my experience 2 AA batteries last for about 2 weeks of relatively intensive playing (several hours of playing almost every day). Ok, it depends on your definition of "lots and lots", but I'd say that's a pretty decent playing time for just 2 AA batteries. Overall it's rather cheap. I can buy a pack of 8 such batteries for 3.5€, and even if I play rather intensively they last for at least 2 months. That's like 21€/year, which isn't bad at all. Cheaper than most rechargeable batteries (which don't last much longer anyways...)
