Hello guys! Here is a TAS of a SMW ROM Made by me! (Also, no. You can't download that game I TASed as a ROM, you'll need to download it as a IPS and patch it to a clean ROM to play it) IPS download: Link download

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Snes9X v1.51
  • Complete the game as fast as possible
  • Be first in TASing this game
  • Take damage in the first level to save time

Comments

I lost some frames entering the door on the final stage, but meh. I also made usage of the P-Switch reusage glitch in the second level. I did it as fast as possible. In the third stage I saved lots of frames by jumping while I was climbing the vine.

Stage by stage comments

M Island Night

In this stage you start AUTOMATICALLY with a mushroom. Meaning you have a chance of taking damage without dying (unless you take another mushroom). I took damage in that stage to save time

M Island Sun-Rise

In this stage you enter a cave and you find Yoshi. A messge box is displayed. You need to use a P-Switch to pass two areas. I had to sacrifice Yoshi because I couldn't do a P-Switch jump.

M Island day

In this level you need to find a P-Switch to unlock the path that leads to the goal. Tons of frames were saved for jumping before and while climbing the rope.

The Doctor's

This level...well...It isn't actually a real level, but you can talk to a blue Yoshi before entering the door. Not necessary though. I could've save a few frames if I didn't had to press left before entering the first door. Anyway, Mario drinks the medicine...and dies. LOL.

Other comments

You guys would like to see someone TASing this game, right? Well this one is what you were looking for! As I said previously, I could've saved a few frames in the final level If I didn't had to press left before entering the first door. I could've also saved time if I didn't select "Continue and Save" when the save prompt spawned. Man...

Nach: This run begins from a snapshot for no apparent reason which is against our rules. It uses a hack, and therefore that also is being judged. While the hack seems like a cute Mario game for casual gamers, it does not seem to offer much in TASing potential. Hacks need to standout by making very encompassing use of the game engine, and provide a unique experience. As for the run itself, it looks like it can use a lot more work. I don't know this hack well, so my perception may be inaccurate, but with some more effort, it should be possible to cut it down to under three minutes. Reception has also been very poor. Rejecting.

Hello LIMO, Is there any reason this run starts from a snapshot instead of power on?

I don't know. I mean, I recorded it with Snes9x v1.51, though I didn't see any issues, even though I downloaded a copy of the submission and I played it. It just went fine. So I don't see why it should be a problem (probably .smv coding error). I hope I answered you properly

Hello guys! Here is a TAS of a SMW ROM Made by me!
I know it's an old post to bring up, but:

I can't help but feel like this game is someone's senior project for college, and not an actual sellable game. It is like a ROM hack, but instead a copy. Perhaps I'm wrong, but since PC games are so easy to make, it seems like we need to draw a line, like we do for hacks. Otherwise, I could write a game called "DarkKobold winz thiz TAS" and try and get it published.
Which is pretty much how I feel about this submission.

I voted "no" for two reasons. The first being the hack itself. I don't think the hack is really worth being on the website. Te second would be the TAS you made of it. There are a few places that you could have been quicker (like with your running speed). You should look up http://tasvideos.org/GameResources/SNES/SuperMarioWorld.html

in my opinion there should be only TASes of ROM hacks which are long and very good (quality like the original game, for example Super Mario Star Road [Rom Hack of SM64]), this is not even good for Vault, sorry vote no.

It is a good start for a ROM hack, but it doesn't feel finished.
It's hard to look this good. My TAS projects

Is it normal than you didn't even jump to keep your speed even when P is max? Seems suboptimal
Current: Rayman 3 maybe? idk xD Paused: N64 Rayman 2 (with Funnyhair) GBA SMA 4 : E Reader (With TehSeven) TASVideos is like a quicksand, you get in, but you cannot quit the sand

This got my first ever no vote. I'm sorry about that ToonLucas22, something had to. On top of it having little entertainment value, I feel there is something not right about TASing a game you made yourself. It is the goal of game designers to produce a watertight game that has no design flaws. It is the job of a TASer to seek out even the tiniest flaws a game has and use those to rip the game apart. These two goals are pretty contradictory; the same person cannot succeed at both.

Surprisingly enough, this hack was accepted to SMWCentral. Place clearly has lower standards than they used to. //I also think you all are misinterpreting his wording about him creating the Romhack. So far as I can tell, the submitter on smwc and him are two different people. LIMO, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh derp. My apologies, I assumed the phrase "made by me" in the first sentence of the submission referred to the ROM, because it is already assumed that the person who submits the TAS also made it. Still doesn't change my decision about being neither entertaining nor publish-worthy, and it doesn't look very optimised either. Also, it looks like jlun2 made the same mistake, so probably the wording needs to be changed.

This hack is not good quality. Compared to say Super Demo World the Legend Continues or The Second Reality Project, this is no where as good. Hacks must be good to be here. Don't give up. Keep TASing.

Voted no for multiple reasons. 1 - The run is very short, but not because of anything related to a TAS. It's because the game is so short. There's not much room for entertainment here in the terms of normal gameplay. VERY few levels, no bosses, etc. The game itself is not very different or entertaining, so normally it'd be up to the player to do things differently or break the game to show that this is not just a normal playthrough, but... 2 - No attempt was made to entertain the viewer during times of "simple" gameplay (that is, a straight run or carrying an item from point A to B), something that could easily be done by somebody that has complete control over the game. Check out things like this for an example of what I mean. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmpbFDc8ZCA Auto-scrolling level, normally one of the most boring things, but made plenty entertaining here. Shows off skills and minor bugs. On the contrary, no attempt to do fancy tricks or close-calls was made in this submission beyond the bare minimum to move past certain points. 3 - As far as technical entertainment... it scores negative in my opinion. There's a notable lack of shortcuts, glitches, or other such time-savers that go outside the realm of normal gameplay (which is something considered important in a TAS since the point is to show how fast the game itself can be beaten regardless of the player). So there's no points there, but it also doesn't use the well-known tricks, most of which are documented on this site (including animated gifs, even), many of which could be used to speed this run up and are notably lacking (as already pointed out), so it's pretty negative there as far as I'm concerned. I do not consider this a TAS intended to set a record. This is just a recording of normal gameplay that uses save states every so often to erase normal gameplay mistakes. This means that it could easily be beaten by anybody that's familiar with TASing, it's not going to set a very strong record. EDIT: Edited spacing and some words and added another end sentence to clarify what I feel needs to be taken into consideration for the next submission.

Starting from a snapshot means that some RAM / SRAM values could've been changed to give the TAS author an advantage.

I agree with everyone else; the hack isn't of the quality needed to be published here, and the TAS misses several known tricks that would make it faster. I have to vote No because I wasn't entertained, but I also don't think it should be published. But like hegyak said, don't give up! There are better hacks and official games that you can run that are easier to TAS too. Once you decide to start working on one, you should post your progress in the forums so others can help you make sure your TAS is as fast as it can be.
