For the benefit of those who didn't follow the stream 24/7, what were some of the memorable highlights of SGDQ 2015, so that we could check them out from the archives? (Direct links are appreciated but not required.)

http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

This was one of the better GDQs in general, and listing every run I considered a highlight would take way too long. So if you really need to watch anything, watch the Tetris Block: Link to video

I was thinking about the most awesome "memorable highlights", but you are right, if there were any controversies or other unusual stuff, be free to post them too. Edit: Btw, damn you for that video. It led to other YouTube recommendation videos, which led to other videos... which led to videos like this (completely unrelated to GDQ, but fully related to awkwardness): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ITftz_kbNs Let's just say I now fully understand what "cringe" feels like. Ach.

False. I know you're most likely referring to this tweet. Klaige's twitter account is not meant to be taken seriously or looked at to begin with.

He deleted it after being spammed with hateful comments.

Somebody has usually made a highlights/bloopers reel of these events. That's been about 2-3 hours of content, which has been quite entertaining indeed. It may take a half a year before such a reel is edited and published, though.

Also, since this GDQ (non-)monetized non-official/non-author uploads videos of the event are forbidden (doesn't say in what way you can remix videos/provide highlight reels/etc): https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/regarding_future_video_uploads.html Rather draconian if you ask me. I get the feeling that since GDQs have become so large ("our brand"), they want to behave more like a company without any clear way in how to go about that (e.g. publish clear licensing terms)... P.S.: I noticed because of the announcement here: "BAD NEWS! Recently the policy of the GDQ uploads..." -- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOWDU-iokgQTudah5-4kAIQ (don't know how to permalink that)

"The community has closed this channel due to terms of service violations." I always fear "the community". Not only the specific term wasn't specified, but the GDQ channel (in which he was online) didn't suffer any punishment. This seems more like a revenge for spoiling the party, possibly taking people away from donating and accessing the mo$t accessed Twitch channel.

I have only passed on the information I received from someone else. I didn't know about any tweet.

The blindfolded runs are always quite interesting, and this year wasn't an exception. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjID52exQys

This is just one of the many reasons why I started disliking the GDQ events. They're not the speedrun community organizing an event to have fun, they're a company that uses speedruns to make money. Just read their announcement about the new policy for YT uploads. They talk about their "brand". Whenever people talk like this, you know that they're all about money. Regarding the runner that got kicked out: I don't know if GDQ has anything to do with the shutdown of his twitch channel, but if they actually do, that would be one of their shadiest moves so far. They're free to kick people from their events, but not to punish them on external websites, that's just unacceptable. The fact that the entire structure of GDQ is very nontransparent makes it even harder for me to like them.
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.

I heard he got "community banned", that is, enough people reported his channel that he got banned. Not directly GDQ's fault, more its watchers.

I will agree with you that the word "brand" is perhaps a poor choice here in context, but the rest of the sentiment in the future uploads thread about ensuring runners have the ability to post their own runs is actually OK with me because I had a lot of trouble controlling what kinds of encodes people were putting up for the TASBot block at AGDQ. To clarify, I am the "runner" in the context of the TASBot block and I authorize TASVideos to create encodes and post them on YouTube and elsewhere on my behalf, but YouTube user BlazeIt42013yo who posts a low bitrate encode doesn't have my permission and the above declaration from GDQ staff helps me enforce that. While I agree that out of legal necessity GDQ LLC has had to do things that make it look a bit more corporate such as treating the raffle as a sweepstakes I'd say they've done an acceptably good job handling the growing pains. I was able to see a lot more of the behind-the-scenes struggles at SGDQ 2015 and I have an enormous amount of respect for how difficult this particular event was due to various challenges. I'm sure there will be some small changes for the next GDQ event but in general I think they did a fantastic job this year.

Seconding this one, it was awesome! I found the RTA route for glitching to the end to be pretty surprising and cool too.

I rather enjoyed the Maldita Castille race. It's a neat game and the runners had good banter.

I found the Mega Man 4 race exciting, the Pokémon Blue blindfolded race very entertaining, Castlevania II run surprising, and the Tetris section awesome as usual.

Out of the few videos I watched of this, I liked... - The Pokémon Blue "Gotta Catch 'Em All!" speedrun by Shenanagans, making me think that there should be an improvement to the TAS sometime in the future. Him racing it blindfolded against Keizaron was the icing on the cake when it comes to funny things. - Speaking of unnatural luck and precision, adefgames' FDS Legend of Zelda glitched run. I swore that was impossible to pull off in real time! - The Mega Man 1 TAS being successfully console verified played back to a live audience. I thought it was console verified, but doing THAT would take quite a bit of time trying to get the darn thing to sync. Whoops! - altabiscuit destroying Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. - The EarthBound run. - The never-ending bid war over the animals' fate in Super Metroid. - A handful of other bid wars between who should be named what in the Chrono Trigger 100% run (for example), which I may watch soon.

When money is involved, especially the sums we are talking about here, things tend to get a bit ugly, even when none of that money goes to the organizer or anybody else (besides the charity organization). If nothing else, because of legal reasons. Everything has to be done by the book. And when there is a significant amount of people involved, I'm assuming that preventive measures have to be taken to combat foul play from anybody. Every single cent must be accounted for. And of course since these events are of significant size (with hundreds of participants and visitors, and dozens of organizers), it requires work and attention for things to go smoothly (and to, once again, minimize the possibility of ugly things happening.) Rigidity and bureaucracy are an inevitable, and necessary, side-effect of all this. An event of this size just cannot be organized like it were a lan-party among a half-dozen friends. The more people are involved, and the more money is involved, someone somewhere is going to screw up. Or play foul. Or something is going to go wrong. These possibilities cannot simply be ignored.
