Samsara: I literally heard of this game for the first time about an hour ago. Apparently it's a homebrew game? Public domain or something. Someone longplayed it. Maybe it was a shortplay. Let's compromise and call it a mediumplay. Sounds good.
In lieu of actual comments about a game I know nothing about, I'm going to tell you all a story. A grand story, passed down to me from my grandmother, and to her from my grandmother's grandfather, and to him from my grandmother's grandfather's second aunt twice removed. Join me as I whisk you all away to a whimsical fantasy universe and sing unto you the story of this run's creation:
<arandomgameTASer> SamsaraTF: TAS the first level and I'll TAS the rest
Ah, what a wonderful story. Very much prophetic in the olden days. I hope that you too will pass this down to your children and keep the tale alive for as long as humanly possible. Records of this tale shall be recovered by superhumans, millions of years from now, as a sign of how life in our time used to be.
True to our glorious tale, I did indeed TAS the first level in about 10 minutes and arandomgameTASer TASed the rest in about 20. Why did we do it? I'm not sure. I don't think I'll ever be sure. Did you know that "Chase" and "Vault" have the same amount of letters? Now you can't unsee it.

Stage by stage comments

lmao

Can we get real here for a sec

Samsara: No. Well... okay.
Movement is fixed, game's all about minimizing squares walked on. Video games are art. Ferris Bueller gifs. I'm too lazy to find them. I spent more time writing this submission text than I did TASing the game. What am I doing with my life?

Why did two people need to TAS this

Why did you cancel 2015, 2016, and 2017's TAS of the Year?

Samsara: Non-notable homebrew, indistinguishable from real time play, terrible submission thread. Mostly the former two.

Did you guys at least took the time to analyze the enemy AI? Because I find it odd that you couldn't avoid waiting for a while at level 2. Also, now I want to see a Pac-Man arcade TAS.

Better idea: Ms. Pac-Man (the Tengen one, on SNES because the Genesis one has input lag issues and the NES one looks fugly), Strange maze set (32 levels, actual game ending, most variety), Crazy difficulty (makes the player and the ghosts go at speeds so fast, it's barely possible for humans to control!), and 2 player co-op gameplay. THAT would be interesting to watch. And not go on for infinity like an arcade Pac-Man run would, since it was recently proven that the kill screen CAN be completed without losing any lives, bringing you back to level 1... Also, nice little TAS. Yes vote!

This a joke submission, right? Too simple a game to be interesting without glitching it.
Shit tier TASer.

Level 1 strategy already looks wrong. At 0:06 in the encode instead of going down and eating 1 thingy, go straight to the right and eat them all from the bottom. I like the game. I love puzzles. I think this deserves perfect solutions. Meh vote. Edit: Oh, it probably looks no different from unassisted runs though, so that’s kinda against the rules? I guess?

EDIT: Misunderstood, nevermind. Can't believe I missed that. We'll be redoing the room strategies today.

In the fullness of time, this dream will be realized. I don't think it would be necessary to play through Level 256. Playing through Level 21 should be enough to meet the TASVideos standard, as the game does not change beyond this Level. Level 13 might also be considered acceptable, as this is the last Level to feature a new Bonus Item. Please pardon the off-topicness.

I didn't realize that until just after it was submitted. Somehow it's gotten a lot of yes votes, though, so it might still qualify somehow. User movie #24877001579965924 Routing improvements in every stage, also more close calls that might make it stand out slightly more as tool-assisted.

The perfect solution for the first stage is going right, taking all the outside dots, then the center from the left (right, down, left, up, 1sq down, right). With the enemy behaviour in the encode this wouldn’t be possible, but is it maybe possible to manipulate the RNG or just wait for a better value at the main menu?

As far as I've tested, enemies are scripted to follow you. The only way to "manipulate" them is to just wait in a certain spot so they move a different direction. The routes in the new file were made with this in mind.

So for example in level 1, what determines whether the AI goes left or up? If it’s not RNG it should always default to going left I presume. If it could go up, there would be a better strategy keeping in mind that the AI follows you.

That is the case, yes. Enemies will always move in the same direction upon stage start, since you're in a fixed position and they start moving on the same frame you do. They'll turn at intersections only if taking those turns would put them closer to your current position, and they can't turn completely around.

User movie #24885350533620511 Improved level 1, also had to add two frames before level 3 because otherwise it desynced, oddly. Everything else is the same. I'll try to improve the other levels later / tomorrow.

I think to vote No. For a homebrew game does not really have much substance in their game to make it stand out. And it's this game stands out in notable the vault? There are plenty of these homebrew NES games that are cheesy that are short and do not require great effort to play.

There is a trick you can do to save ≈ 3 frames at the end of each level. I’ll let you guys figure it out because it saddens me to see that I’m the only person TASing intelligently on this website. Don’t make me lose faith in other TASers more than I already have. I also think I have a better strategy for level 1 that’s 1 square faster but haven’t TAS’d it yet. Edit: TAS’d and it loses ≈ 3 frames because you have to wait for the AI to move out of the way. Good job on the strategy, Really_Tall. I’m having troubles dealing with savestates on BizHawk btw. It kinda feels like how PSXjin uses them and that is a terrible system.

I don’t think that was that bad of a message. I didn’t even swear or insult anyone directly. Also, you’re one of the few TASers I respect, don’t be mad.

Like the way you're acting right now? That's what you get when you run BizHawk on a system which doesn't have any support. Upgrade to 7 or 8.1 or 10 already. >.>

Found a new strategy on level 2, goes over empty squares only 6 times (as opposed to 8 times), which saved 19 frames. My ending trick only saved 1 frame for some reason, so 20 frames saved on level 2 and 3 frames saved on level 1 (with the ending trick). Old file loaded level 3 at frame 1411, mine at 1388. Edit: Saving 2 squares and saving an odd number of frames (19) makes me think I TAS’d so well that I actually lost a frame in this easy game, lol. Will double check. Edit: Or maybe arandomgameTASer or whoever did it before lost it. Edit: Or lag is dumb. Each square is 8 frames, so I saved 16f from strategy and 3 from random lag, I suppose. Tied my TAS time unassisted except for the last frame because that trick is impossible RTA. So yeah I don’t think this game can really make for an exceptional TAS, unless the level end trick alone is enough to consider the TAS as standing out compared to an RTA, lol.

Then, how about I use that respect to give you some helpful tips? You claim yourself to be the only person TASing intelligently on this website, which I hope is simply an exaggeration you used to get the point of bad optimization across. I call it an exaggeration because it seems like this claim is plain wrong, as you did nothing to prove it. Be careful with exaggerations, as they might hurt other people if done wrong.
ALAKTORN wrote:

Now, instead of losing faith in other TASers, how about you think about the one way of TASing that is even better than competition: collaboration. Instead of letting other people figure something out, try working together, sharing ideas and pointing out mistakes in a direct manner, without letting your ego get in the way.

See, you should change your attitude towards everyone else on this website. You should try to see things from another perspective, from another point of view. It would have made you realize that everyone else on this website might be upset about being told that they don't TAS intelligently.

Of course it wasn’t meant to be taken literally.

Just because I haven’t submitted that many TASes to the site (my only one, SM64DS, got DS TAS of the Year award, btw) doesn’t mean I haven’t proven it. Have you seen my Tenchu WiP? I saved like over 10 seconds over the course of starting menus and a single level compared to the published TAS. What about my Mega Man ZX WiP? It took me a lot of effort to figure out a perfect RNG manipulation and save over a second on the first boss compared to the published TAS. If I actually was motivated to do anything, this site would be flooded with my amazing TASes.

Collaboration takes motivation, which I don’t have. Letting others figure out tricks for themselves allows them to level up as TASers. The trick I’m using is nothing obscure and should really be on a tutorial page of this website somewhere.

I’m sorry if they’re upset but it’s a fact. I also get upset when I see suboptimal TASes, so it’s reciprocal.

No. While it might be true that you are able to prove that you TAS intelligently, you are not going to prove that everyone else on this website is not TASing intelligently!

Don't you think that collaboration is intelligent TASing? Btw, you still let your ego get in your way.
