Risky Woods was released in 1992 for Amiga, Atari ST, PC and Genesis/Megadrive.
Player frees monks and fights four bosses in 12 stages.
Movie features:
  • Emulator used: Gens 11a
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Genre: Platform
Monk statues
You have to break certain statues in every non-boss stage to free trapped monks. There are also statues of evil monks that don't need to be broken.
Circle shaped keys
When you bring the keys to a gargoyle statue you have to complete a memory game with D-pad.
If you haven't collected every key the gargoyle statue sends you to the first missed key with an expense of 5 health.
Weapons
Weapons can be acquired from Gargoyle statues and are always predetermined.
You can grow your weapon level up to three if you keep collecting the same weapon. Then it hits enemies as many times.
When you pick a new weapon it starts at first level.
Weapon level shows on screen under the stage number as small squares.
Default weapon is dagger which is used for first three stages.
Axe starts to appear more often from 4th stage onwards and has the best reach so it will become our choice.
Boomerang is unique in a way you can throw these to opposite direction of target.
Mace and Fire wheel don't seem to be any special.
Coins
At 33 you get silver armor which improves skull item's power. At 67 coins you get gold armor which prevents damage and makes skull item do even more damage for a longer period of time.
Enemies randomly drop one coin or even bag of coins.
You have to crouch to grab coins, so I only pick a few when there's time.
Bosses drop 19 coins after defeat and spawn four treasure chests for a bag of coins in each.
Items
Skull: Costs 6 health to pick up. Damages every enemy on screen. Becomes more powerful with silver and gold armor. Used in 2nd boss to get rid of its shield. Also used twice in final boss to clear enemies.
Lightning makes you impervious to damage for 10 seconds.
Fireball seeks and destroys enemies.
Arrows send you backwards in stage.
Hourglass gives you one minute more time to cmplete a stage.
Miniature player gives one life.
Taking hits from enemies
You will fall down only able to direct your movement.
Losing life
Makes you lose one weapon level and five coins. You don't always collapse when you lose life. Only if you take damage from enemies or pick a skull item at 6 health.
In this run I lose life once when I pick a skull item on stage 4. It didn't do any harm since I had 5 health and weapon was at first level.
Bosses (memory address 00FF11A7)
Each have 220 health. First boss takes 3 dmg per hit, 2nd and 3rd take 2 dmg and last boss takes 1 dmg per hit.
1:46 - Some sloppy jumping here. I found out that 18 frames could be saved, but due to randomness of the game, I would have to redo everything after this.
3:11 - Good place to get a skull item and lose a life when weapon level is at 1.
3:47 - The only way to get that key is to let gargoyle statue send you back.
4:44 - Jumping into pit also ends the stage.
4:53 - I use a skull bomb to get rid of boss' shield.
Last words: Why this game?
I remember seeing the advertisement in some magazine. I did a short test run long time ago but didn't have knowledge of the game to continue. Just recently I saw a speedrun of this game and became motivated again.

feos: This is a nice run, but after you watch the first few minutes, you've basically seen all it has to offer entertainment wise. Yet the action is dense, and it's more than carelessly running right. The feedback was very narrow, but positive. And the game's quality is quite high, you feel the Amiga spirit in it very well. Accepting to Moons.
Fog: Processing.

Welcome back, maTO!
TASing is like making a film: only the best takes are shown in the final movie.

Once again, did anyone actually love the run and the game?
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

This version of the game has always been the strangest one, in my opinion. Rohan was just a generic adventurer in the original, but here, he appears to be a monk of some kind? They also did away with the Shoppe system at the end of levels, but kept the coins... which in turn give you access to silver and golden armor -- the latter of which can make you completely invincible to damage (but you still get bumped around). They also changed the Eye-Key to a game of Concentration/Memory. Other than that and the music taking a dive in quality (sometimes significantly), this is a very faithful port. Totally paraphrasing myself from my edits to that Wikipedia article... In any case, it's great to see this game in any of its forms finally TASed. All things considered, this one is certainly the most TAS-friendly, since you have to grind for coins to buy weapon upgrades in the other versions and whatnot, so there's that. Quite an entertaining tun, too! Thank you, maTO!
