Mario's Keytastrophe: Reborn Edition TAS by Mario3264

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Bizhawk 2.2.2
  • Aims for the fastest possible time
  • Deaths used

Comments

I think the levels got harder and harder as it went on; I think many of the levels were pretty easy with slowdown, savestates, and whatever other emulator tools. Death was actually a mechanic within this hack, it allows you to respawn above them. You cannot be crushed by them, you can glitch through a wall when you respawn while a wall is above it. You can only respawn if you die below or above them.

Stage by stage comments

#1 - Lesson

The first stage was pretty simple, all I had to do was to kill the goomba with the blue block and kicked the blue block into the yellow block, Then I took the key and put it into the keyhole.

#2 - Return

This was also pretty simple. A trick I did was I jumped through the hole when the yellow platform was extending. I popped one of the goomba's bubble and kicked the goomba into the yellow block. I grabbed the key and put it into the keyhole again.

Other comments

I could probably improve the execution by using glitches or maybe the route (number order) could be slow. The restart could've been avoided if I hadn't overwritten my savestate on accident and I would've saved some more time.

Hello and welcome to the site Mario3264! This site is for superplays, hence the name of the practice, Tool Assisted Superplay. We aim to make and publish runs that exceed human abilities, typically represented by the goal of going as fast as possible, and this is seen by our approach the games we TAS. In particular, one unique property of TASing is since you have (theoritically) infinite time, you can fix any mistakes in your play. In fact, you can see every facet of the game at any given frame - you can access the entire memory of the console your game runs on at any given frame, and kind of see everything. Kind of like God playing a game; he can predict everything, has perfect knowledge about the game and even the console quirks (that he can use to go faster, of course) but he has the same controller as everyone else, and does the same things that an human could do. So mistakes in superplays, especially important ones that waste a lot of time (like there are quite a few in this movie), does not mean the TAS is up to quality standards, especially for games on the Super Mario World engine, which has been studied to death (game resources page). It seems you are not aware of all the tools at your disposal (see http://tasvideos.org/TasingGuide/AdvancedTools.html which has a nice primer on this.) In particular, check out TAStudio which is a built-in easy edit interface for TASing that allows you to see every frame in a piano roll. TASing with savestates is mostly obsolete with the advent of tools like these, and you don't have the problem of not being able to go back to earlier in your superplay (because with the piano roll, you can jump to every single frame of your superplay.) Finally, if you want to share unfinished TASes, use the userfiles and make a post in the appropriate forum thread.

Hello and welcome to TASVideos! I always like to see new people interested in TASing Super Mario World, and I like the hack you chose as well. Unfortunately, from the encode it's easy to see there are a lot of optimization flaws, so this submission can't be accepted on TASVideos. Super Mario World is a game that you need to know a lot to make an optimal TAS. You can find information on the SMW game resource page, on Youtube videos such the series Let's Glitch Super Mario World, and on SMW Discord servers. However, I noticed lack of knowledge is definitely not the only problem here. It's easy to see by the rerecord count that you rushed a LOT the making of this TAS. You need much more patience and caution to make an optimal run.

Yes, I didn't take note of resources that I have to me; I know about the problems and TAStudio is a bit laggy for my PC to handle and it takes a long time to seek. I wasn't trying to make the most optimal run. I was burnt out for a while when I started making this TAS and decided to TAS the rest 2 days ago, so I can see why the rerecord count is so low and how you can see that I rushed. No worries, I'll take note if I ever want to improve this run.

You can voluntary cancel it if you want. It's likely going to be rejected if you allow it to be judged.

Hello Mario128, I just give you an advice to begin : Don't try to TAS a game ever made especially when his engine is known like this because you'll have to catch up all precedent works. It can be very demotivating (I'll never work on Mario games or Pokemon because a lot of person know these games better than me). Find a game where there is a lower or no knowledge on to train you. You can also play it on casual play before so you could find good stuffs and your routing to your TAS. Search every video and SPEEDRUNS on internet and watch them all (you could find very cool stuffs). If there is speedrunners, try to contact them they could be very helpful and you to them ! After, try to do the first level or stop to the first break, try every way to move in the game even if it seems stupid and see if you improve this first level or not, the way you move is on of the most important thing of your TAS. Every TASer has is own way to prepare/do a TAS so find your way ;). Good luck, I know it's hard at the beginning !

Just so it's clear, feel free to TAS whatever you want, put it on youtube, do it just for fun, post about it in the appropriate game's thread on the forums, or whatever. But when it comes to actually submitting the TAS to TASVideos proper, the level of optimization must be very high, so you should be planning the whole way through to make a great TAS if this is your goal.
