It's finally here! A sub 1:05:00 TAS of Abe's Oddysee 100% done in 1:04:16! This movie (comparing from the emulator) is 4 seconds (201 frames) than the current published movie (1:05:01) thanks to some new strats and optimizations! This run also has faster menuing than the previous TAS which makes the opening faster.

Technical Stuff

Emulator Used: Bizhawk v2.3.3 (also syncs on version 2.4)
BIOS used: SCPH7003.bin
ROMS used:
  • Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (USA)

Game Objectives

  • Rescues All 99 Mudokons (100% Completion)
  • Heavy Glitch Abuse
  • Uses Major Skips
  • Manipulates luck
  • Uses death to save time

Glitches Used

Death Delay (Sprite Corruption)

Often abbreviated as DDG it makes Abe invisible and can corrupt his sprite and eventually become invisible at some point allowing him to get past things that would kill him. Abe will die if he falls of a ledge or gets zapped. A video made by Sligfantry can show you how this glitch works:

Auto Turn Delay

This glitch works by standing on the edge of the ledge and pressing the down button quickly and run towards a spot where you would like to hoist down. You will need to press either 'left/down' or 'right/down' depending on which direction Abe was facing.

Stop Turn and Backwards Jump

By timing this glitch perfectly you can make Abe stop and turn. To set it up, Abe needs to be standing near a ledge (pressing up whilst turning around) you will be able to make Abe do a backwards jump. Notice that when you press the opposite direction to where Abe is standing at the incorrect frame, Abe will just jump up and stand. But if you time it perfectly, Abe will jump backwards and possibly jump to another screen. This will allow you to jump backwards to areas and skip Zulags. In a 100% run it will allow you to get to secret areas quicker and it skips a section of StockYards Escape after finishing the secret area. Sligfantry's video can show you how this glitch works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIo1TJUBGlo

Multiple Backwards Jump

Whilst performing a backwards jump, simply press up/jump and Abe will do a multiple backwards jump and in this run Abe will use it to skip Zulag 3 to get to Zulag 4.

Diagonal fall

This is done by combining the stop turn and the auto turn glitch. It is used as a time saver in Monsaic Lines and to save a frame in RuptureFarms.

Quick Portal Closure

This run contains a glitch which saves a few frames. You can free the Mudokon a few frames earlier than a normal rescue. Here is the before and after video on how it looks when using the glitch.

Jumping from a Roll

A new thing discovered by Himmdwag, in some parts of the game Abe will jump from a roll!

Fargrabs

In some places like RuptureFarms and Stockyards Return, Abe will do a fargrab on which will make Abe jump to the next ledge a few frames earlier than running and jumping to a ledge normally.

Improvements

RuptureFarms

In the later part of this level from Mudokons 19-25, I managed to get Abe to stop turn a few tiles earlier than the published run which saved me a bit of time in this stage.

Stockyards

In this stage, I added the jump from roll strat from the any% TAS which now makes this stage faster. Also, at the end of the stage, Abe does exactly the same thing as he does in the any% run - sliding towards the end of the stage.;

Monsaic Lines

I managed to add the strats from the any% TAS with the 2 slingers making this stage slightly faster!

Scrabanian Temple - Trial 2

From the any% NMG category - runners use a new trick on which you chant before walking to pick up the rock.

Paramonia

In my previous attempt in doing Paramonia, I had a crash in the screen with the bees. I managed to fix this by altering the inputs before the bees screen so the game wohn't crash.

Zulag 1

I set up the DDG faster like in the any% run and this time Abe gets to laugh before the glitch!

Free Fire Zone

I added the fargrab strat from the any% TAS and fixed the audio bug from the cancelled run.

Thanks

I need to thank all the runners of the Oddworld speedrunning community who found all these new strats to make my TASes faster. Thanks guys!

Oh boy not again... So I just checked Namesoom's WR video with a section in Screabanian Nests that looked slow, and I think I'll be able to save more frames on this one too. It won't be much of an issue to fix since it's in the Scrabanian Nests. I will post an update here when I'm done fixing all the desyncs so I will need to set this one to delayed for the time being.

OK. The new movie file is done and it's 58 frames faster than this one. Please can the judge replace this movie with this one. http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/66360086537815601

Bizhawk 2.3.3 crashes when I open this movie. So I'm using 2.4 instead. I will replace the submission file after confirming sync to the end.
my personal page - my YouTube channel - my GitHub - my Discord: thunderaxe31 <Masterjun> if you look at the "NES" in a weird angle, it actually clearly says "GBA"

That's odd - it didn't crash for me. I'll also make an encode on v2.4 as well.

Oh boy - not again.... I found another place where I could save time - and that's around frame 40740 where I noticed where the Slig did a double shoot there - but then if If fix that part there's going to be desyncs after and there are some that are harder to fix later. I'll see what happens when I resync this part - I might have to set it to delayed again if I can get all the desyncs fixed. Update: Well I don't think it's going to save that much time anyway so let's keep this one in judging.

It's like saying "Oh boy I might have to set this TAS on delayed again" but thankfully what I did in the TAS is actually faster because the screen transition is faster. I'm almost done working on an improvement for the Exoddus any% TAS and I'm predicted a 37:14 if everything syncs. I still got a new glitch to add in at the end that will save me loads of time - the Skydive glitch in the last Zulag before the end of the game.

Screenshot suggestion?
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

How about something like 38:22 when Abe chants before he picks up the rock.
