  • played on Visualboy Advance 1.7.2 w/rerecording (i suppose the newest one Nitsuja has released)
  • prog errors - enemy manipulation (you'll see this a lot); exploiting horrible AI
  • no warps or passwords used
  • damage taken to save time; no deaths
  • plays on hardest difficulty with NO RADAR and auto text scrolling (to end movie asap)
  • Aims for Big Boss Rank (which i have no idea how to describe because it may or may not be the same as the PSX port... i never found anything much on it online, sorry). the basics are to literally never get spotted, never kill anyone, never continue, never use more than 1 ration, and to complete the game quickly.
  • Metal Gear: Ghost Babel - in the year 2002, Solid Snake is brought out of solitude in order to stop the resurrection of a new Metal Gear.
this game is not a part of the official timeline, and never mentions MG2; it instead acts as an alternate reality sequel to MG (MSX version since it actually HAD a Metal Gear).
  • movie making was quite easy because this version DID NOT desync. thank you very much for this BTW nitsuja. it was also quite easy because i have played this game through a lot. the hardest part was plotting what i would need to use where and how much would be too much of something. i tried to end with as little excess weaponry and items as possible. the only real problem came when i would stop on a later level for a night and come back to it the next day. it just took a while to remember where i was.
there are a few boring parts ill admit: the cardboard box conveyor belts in level 5; the vents in levels 8 & 9; the 50 floor elevator rides in level 11.
however, i do very well on all boss battles (Gander and the Hind D were he only problems; the Hind will stop blinking briefly from time to time because i couldn't get to it faster) and complete every level with an Excellent rank.
some pointers before you ask:
  • i do get caught once, but i have NEVER found a way around that. it also doesnt take away from my rank in that level at all (i suppose they planned this part?). and going around would still get me caught by the Camera (not to mention it isnt worth the time that is wasted)
  • level 4's maze puzzle (doors) is always random (random per game; as i had to redo that part and found the same pattern worked)
  • in level 8, i dawdle a bit after each Nikita fired. this is because the elevators are not working and guards are out looking for you (AND THEY KNOW WHERE YOU ARE). staying still after the first one and switching screens resets the guards position
  • level 9's placement of where i can detonate c4's is ALWAYS different (much like level 4's door puzzle)
  • level 11's 2 elevator rides... the first 50 was an attempt at break-dancing; the second time was a bunch of push-ups and then the Konami code d-pad punched out... just for clarification. and while this is not necessary, it is one long and tedious elevator ride. and unlike the vents, i can actually get the chance to entertain the viewer. :)
  • Gander's second form is a randomized pain. it seemed to change the outcome from frame to frame.
highlights (for me):
  • almost any encounter with the basic grunt
  • taking damage in the Flood in level 3 sewers
  • sneaking through level 3 tower
  • handling the extreme east and west fields before Slasher Hawk in level 4
  • Marionette Owl's last shot stop right in front of me as he falls down and dies (level 6)
  • level 8's Nikita handling
  • stopping the behemoth Pyro Bison almost dead in tracks for a bit
  • using a glitch at the end of level 9 to take damage on fire and fall forward saving me a few seconds.
  • the fact that the Hind D NEVER went into its alternate attack patterns
  • Gander's second form never called on those POT SHOT Cyphers
  • in the final battle with Viper, the simple manipulation with him and corner shots
lastly, much like mookish said about his FF1 run, there will be some who watch this and find it boring. im sorry... i did everything i could but some parts are just very tedious and boring.

adelikat: Rejecting. While any one section of this game by itself is entertaining, as a whole this movie is very repetitive and eventually boring. Game length is also a problem. While there are RPG's whis long (and longer). They are extremely short compared to what a theorical "speed run" would be (most of those game would take many days on a console). This element contributed to the entertainment value of the movie.

I watched this back when you posted it on the GBx forum, and have just taken my time responding to it. I do beleive this is worthy of being publishing as you seem to have a good command of the game. The run appears very well done. The thing that bothered me about the run was something you cannot help. This is the utter retardation of the guards posted around the compound. Who hired those guard!? For some reason it frusterated me to watch you run RIGHT infront of or beside the guards without them reacting to you at all. Even though I can hardly penalize the run for that.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing. The cardboard box level is beyond tedious. I still voted YES because it is an impressive run.

My comments in this thread. I'll vote yes, because I still think this is a very solid run.

I have seen your first-9-stage version. But I can't download the savestates in http://nvdata.pilif.ch/MG_GB_WiP.zip so that I can finish seeing the last several stages quickly. (Please watch http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2110) If you can check the file or re-upload it to somewhere else, I may cover the whole movie and vote yes for you... :(

Well done! Vote yes for you, though I noticed that in stage12-13, some hurts seemed avoidable. By the way, is there a play script to read for this game?

yes there is. http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbcolor/game/914401.html you may have to copy and paste that because GF does not allow for direct linking. EDIT by feitclub: Better yet, link to the FAQ page instead of the individual file.

Any good reason why this 1.5 hour movie would be interesting?

all my reasons are in the submission notes; i cant think of anything to add to it. the only real abuse is of the horrible AI.

I actually watched this whole thing (but in 4 sittings). This is waaay to long for what it is. The game is entertaining & you seem to have good control over it but it gets old after awhile. Is this the fastest possible completion time? or is time sacrificed for these goals?: # plays on hardest difficulty with NO RADAR and auto text scrolling (to end movie asap) # Aims for Big Boss Rank (which i have no idea how to describe because it may or may not be the same as the PSX port... i never found anything much on it online, sorry). the basics are to literally never get spotted, never kill anyone, never continue, never use more than 1 ration, and to complete the game quickly. if these goals result in a longer time then I disagree with them. I haven't voted yet, but I am leaning toward "NO".

time is more than likely sacrificed, but i wasnt going for time as much as for the big boss rank.

I have started watching this game, but only finished a portion of it. So far it's entertaining (especially how stupid the guards are), but I suspect it will get a bit drawn-out after a while. One thought I had was, you said you should never get spotted, but I saw that the end-level statistics once marked you as being spotted one time. And you still (I presume) get Big Boss rank. Perhaps finding the limits and utilizing them to cut out the biggest waits and still get Big Boss rank is a good idea. Also once during the flood is seemed like you were waiting inside a door passage for a wave to pass, but then still took damage when the wave came, meaning you could have just ran for it to begin with. But I don't know how the game works there, so...

but not going for time results in a 1 & 1/2 hr movie! This is excessive. Even though it was all entertaining, it gets old. Anything you can do to lower the end time should be done. BTW, I also noticed the spot the Truncated mentioned. Also when you shoot a missle you have to wait until your evade (or something like that) number reaches 0 so you kill time. In one spot you left the room, backtracked a little and THEN the number reached 0. Shouldn't you have been as close as possible to the exit when the number reaches 0? I am voting no, because I disagree with the author's goals. I do think a run of this game could be publishable but it would have to be less than 1 hr (that is about the point that I was forcing myself to continue watching it).

i dont have any documentation on Big Boss for GBC though, and dont know of any. Truncated, waiting outside of the door would have washed me away in the tide and i would have taken damage AND i would have had to start from a position further back. and me getting caught that one time is unavoidible as far as i know. theres a camera on the other side of the route that takes a few more seconds to get to, but it all ends with me getting caught. as far as missile shooting, i wasnt going to get caught by guards, so thats why i stayed in place. and if you mean the elevators place, the elevators wont move with an alert sounding. as far as lowering the games time to below an hour, consider that a lot of the time comes from text and cutscenes which cant be avoided, not game play. as far as redoing the run, im tied up at the moment. but ill reattempt one in the near future i suppose. i was trying to stay true to what the game was about... stealth, and obtaining the highest rank.

>and me getting caught that one time is unavoidible as far as i know. Is getting caught the same as being spotted? I thought caught meant = arrested and locked up, or some such. Okay about the flood thing. I still think you could stay with what the game is about (stealth and obtaining the highest rank), just push it to the limit where you are just about to lose the highest rank. We could probably figure out the precise requirements with a bit of effort, and abuse them without looking sloppy.

well... pushing the limits >>>>>never get spotted of course disobeying this will speed up game play. im currently doing as much GETTING spotted in a new run as i can. >>>>>never kill anyone (in PSX, the limit was 25) this actually takes more time than you'd think. considering i skip a gun until level 5, punching is the only realistic way (since i need grenades for the boss). but in places where guards take a while to move out of the way, i can see using this. >>>>>never continue well, you'd never wanna see that; and i believe continuing even once takes away the rank. >>>>>never use more than 1 ration id try and NOT get hit anyhow, so why push it? taking damage to that extent most likely wont save time. and you're never actually arrested in the game. you're instead only seen either via camera or sentry or dog or birds being alerted to your presence (the dogs are somewhat of an exception, since in places with no sentries, you wont get caught, just mauled to death). but yes, im currently reworking this, running through the game without stopping as much as possible (some spots become very tight though). so ill post a WiP in the forums when i get around to it (every file hosting i run into is being a pain). im not cancelling this until i complete the new version though. so look for something within the next 24 hours (i have no idea what time it is anywhere, but here its 11:50 AM, so ive got perhaps 12 more hours).

If you are working on an improved version, will you be cancelling this submission? EDIT: good luck on your new run :)

I repeat adelikat's question. It seems you are making a new version, will you be cancelling this? I still haven't watched all the way trough this one, but I can try to give you feedback on your new version if you are interested.

not cancelling. if it gets rejected, so be it. ill work on a new version at some point (i found some new strats), going for Big Boss again (because at the hour mark, id only saved 4-5 minutes). i guess i could cancel, but then again, i might not even start on a new version. oh, and i wouldnt expect major improvement at all. at most a minute or more, which is not even a dent in a movie of this length. if you haven't noticed, a great deal of its length comes from unavoidable cut scenes and such, while the game takes roughly 50-60 minutes by in game time.

For the "90" minutes I put in to watching this, I wasn't really impressed. Sure, you handled each situation really well, but that isn't anything above average. I'll contend that the Nikita segments and the boss fights were interesting, but the rest of it seemed realy repetetive, especially with the graphics leaving more to be desired. Voting no.
