I'm in progress of making a run with this awesome game. Since no one would make a run for this awesome game, I decided to make one myself. I had just recently beat all 20 levels (merely just a planning session) in a little over an hour. Sadly, there are hardly any glitches to exploit. So far, I'm about 35% done with the game. There's only one thing I found out about the game (I bet it's been discovered before) to make it go a little faster, but I'm not going to reveal it :P Input is appreciated.

Isn't this game identical to either the NES or Genesis versions?

No, the snes game is much better. Its like a remake of the nes version, (i have never played the genesis one) but it has a lot of improvements, not only graphically. Btw, the japanese version has a debug mode and i couldnt find the damn code anywhere on the internet. I used to own a japanese cart 10 years ago, and the magazine gave the instructions to the code. I only remember the first part: - go to password, input "SPECIAL" and click OK. you will hear a different sound, then cancel, start the game. in the game, pause and enter the sequence. This sequence is what i dont remember, but it was somthing involving almost all snes buttons, without repetition, almost like the capcom street fighter 2 code. I remember on that debug mode there a sound test, and there was a music that i coulndt find anywhere in the game.

I actually found that code on a walkthrough in gamefaqs. This is the code:
Pause the game and then press buttons in this order: B, Y, Up, Down, Left, Right, L, R, then press Start + Select to enter the cheat menu.
Also, the Japanese version has extra stuff in the intro movie as well. I don't know if this is a good result or not, but I'm at level 7 with 108 remaining.

As in the demo? I guess so. Although, there could have been some points in the demo where a few frames here and there could have been shortened. Oh, about the code, I found it in a walkthrough. I'll probably work on it tomorrow. I'm not going to show it now. I plan on getting to level 10 tomorrow. *EDIT I got a little impatient and went to level 10 anyway. If you want, I can throw what I have so far on here to see what you guys think. The demo itself is almost 20 minutes.

If you haven't finished the first two levels in 0:27 and 1:20 respectively, you should stop now. I started work on this game last year, but put it on hold because:
  • At the time, Snes9X was crap
  • I wanted to redo Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Snes9X is no longer crap, and I've finished redoing Sonic 3 & Knuckles, so I'll be going back to it very soon.

What? First two levels in 0:27? What are you talking about? The whole demo itself isn't even 20 minutes.

Maybe SprintGod means the first level should be under 27 seconds and the second level should be under 1 minute and 20 seconds.

Do we really need a third version of the same game on a different system? I thought already the second one was overdoing it a little.

Each version is different: NES
  • It sucks.
Megadrive
  • Guards can be skipped by jumping straight through them.
  • After jumping, you can only grab hold of a ledge on the same level that you jumped from, instead of one below like in the other versions.
  • If you fall through a crumbling floor, you can't grab the ledge to save yourself.
  • Moving with the sword drawn is very slow, meaning you can't step past guards whilst fighting.
SNES
  • More levels and enemies
  • The old levels have sections added to them.
  • The engine is virtually identical to the original PC version.
  • Guards can be skipped by jumping through them, but you stop on the other side and are forced to draw your sword (if you have it).

The first level can't be beaten that fast. From what I experienced, you can' bypass that guard to exit the level.

Yes it can.

Yes you can. It requires an almost perfectly positioned and perfectly timed jump. If done correctly, he'll swing too early and miss, giving you enough time to jump past him and run away. A lot of trial and error is involved, because you'll usually get stabbed in the back before you're out of range.

Little update. I started over with your suggestion and I'm now at level 13 with 99 minutes remaining. I still don't know if that's good or not. If you want to see what I have so far and criticize me download it here. Levels 1-10

There are countless places on the first 3 levels that i spotted. - Are you sure the start game menu cant be reached sooner? - Why did you stop and jump on the first level before the guard, was that really needed? - Are you testing which routes seem faster? because on level 2 you passed by the guard and then had to climb something facing right, it felt that the first path up would have been faster. - Dont defend when fighting the guards, also, i think it seems faster to just kill the 3 HP guards instead of passing them. - Always jump when running if there is enough room to. - On level 3, after the closing gate, when the ground falls you have grabbed the top ledge, its possible to let it fall further and grab the ledge below instead. So, after seeing those things i stopped watching, i hope you can fix it.

Slow and sloppy. I can do it faster than that in real-time.
  • Lots of unnecessary movement.
  • Far too much time wasted on guards.
  • Several missed shortcuts.
I started this game from scratch yesterday (my old SMV got corrupted at some point, probably when my hard drive went haywire a few weeks ago), and after 7 levels it's about 3 minutes faster than your time. You're going to have to use quite a bit more than 10 rerecords per minute to get a movie accepted here.

Sadly, No. I mashed the buttons the entire time to get to the game's main menu.
- Why did you stop and jump on the first level before the guard, was that really needed?
I think so. Every time I tried running at him without jumping, he always killed me when I jumped passed him. For some reason, making him walk forward a bit made it work better.
- Are you testing which routes seem faster? because on level 2 you passed by the guard and then had to climb something facing right, it felt that the first path up would have been faster.
True, but I didn't want to fight him because that guard always seems to block alot of hits. I just felt it was better to skip him.
- Dont defend when fighting the guards, also, i think it seems faster to just kill the 3 HP guards instead of passing them.
When I didn't try to defend, they always opened with a quick attack. So I only guarded when fighting guards that did that. Sometimes it's faster to kill the 3HP guards, but sometimes it's better just to skip them.
- Always jump when running if there is enough room to.
I try to make sure I do. Sometimes when recording, I try that, and he just ends up falling to his death.
- On level 3, after the closing gate, when the ground falls you have grabbed the top ledge, its possible to let it fall further and grab the ledge below instead.
Eh.... I don't really want to bother with having to redo it all over again. Thanks for your input. Also, since I made some mistakes, my controller kinda sucks and the button input is lagged or doesn't respond at all.

Um guys, this game IIRC has a major glitch. I forgot exactly how to do it, but basically, if you loose your first fight, then select something in the options menu, when you continue, you're on the last level. Or perhaps this was intentional...

I knew about that one already... found that when I was like 7 years old or so.

Good, then make a run like that and call it a warp run or smth, then do a regular run.

Don't mash buttons. Check on which exact frame the trigger lies. That means skipping frames in frame advance, because if you (accidentally) press a button for two or more frames in a row, the game will think you're holding the button down instead of pressing it rapidly.
