you could do a hammer bros. suit run if you play the SNES version, since it saves your inventory if you choose to start from world 1.
Would that be legitimate?
Why not?

because it starts from a save instead of reset? anyway, getting the mushroom in 1-1 might be faster, i will see

since it would be a novelty run, I don't think it would be too much of a problem. It would mean though that anyone competing for it would have to use the same save. Anyway, this should probably be discussed in a separate thread.

anyway, getting the mushroom in 1-1 might be faster, i will see It's not just getting the mushroom in level 1 I suggested, but also getting the leaf in level 3 rather than the fortress. The leaf will slow you down a lot, but it might end up being faster since you can get to the ceiling in the fortress much faster.

I always thought if you were running full speed at the end of the level (and jumped into the box at full speed), you always got a star....

Has anyone tried to get the mushroom from the Note Block in Level two? Then you won't have to wait for the "Coming up from the block" delay.
Bein' away for like five years, and not a single new post in the ZSNES forum... :'-(

The hammer brother moves two steps instead of one after the fortress. But you said you hadn't optimized that yet, so I guess it's OK.

i have attempted to get the mushroom at 1-1 (the mushroom where you have to throw a red turtle shell on it) and that route was 30 frames slower than current route, but had a nice move which unfortunately wont be on the final thing. i will test more if i can get mushroom at 1-2 but i have tried a bit without success already.

i had it to the end of the fortress, which is why i got the leaf early, but i re-recorded over it and i have it only up untill 1-3 which only shows a slower path (the time is gained at the fortress, but unfortunately, not enough to make it up) i will post it later

Umm.. is it good idea to do run on SNES instead? on SNES if you push L + R, mario boost up right very fast, works in air too.

its in All-Star + World (U), maybe you forgot to check "Allow L + R / U + D" in joypad config?

If slowdown is a concern, what are you going to do about the 99-lives thing? That surely causes some slow down.
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

it doesnt, as far as i know. havent got there yet. maybe it will slow down with too many enemies on screen, but if theres no other way around then the movie will have to have slowdown. the video must be with 99 lives or then no video at all

What determines how fast you get taken back to the map screen? Is it a certain amount of time after you touch the box, or a certain amount of time after Mario walks off the screen? Edit: Btw, are you going to get much more than 99 lives like Genisto and Morimoto did, or will you get just 99 and also spend some time in the autoscrolling levels doing some cool tricks and glitches?

it always take same amount of time (as far as i know) what i do to change is touch the box on a different frame. so its a fixed amount of time after touching the box (i will test that if it changes anything by touching it low or high, which would mean mario touching the ground on a different frame, but i think it wont make a difference) edit: i thought of getting 99 lives and the rest of the enemies killed put on score instead of keep getting lives after 99 but that will require a lot more planning i dont know how much i can do about that i'm terrible at planning

It's not a requirement... but it's nice. Creativity is a requirement. I specially appreciate if it has wide variety of tricks and shows that Mario is a thinking, curious and creative person instead of a bored or monotonous person.

here is the mushroom on 1-1 test run. its nowhere near as optimized as my v2 goes all the way past the fortress, i will remake everything to optimize http://www.angelfire.com/ex/uobt/smario3j-foda-v3.zip

I was particularly surprised how fast you got the mushroom, and even maintained the P-speed. As for the leaf, are you sure you can't use a route like this?

taking the leaf on 1-2 is a much worse case than taking it at 1-3 because then i wouldnt be able to jump at p-speed never ever anymore. that musical note could be good to get the mushroom only. i havent tried it yet, its in my plans to see if its faster than mushroom in 1-1.
