This is an improvement to my existing TAS, saving about 7.5 seconds (and bringing the in-game time down to a 54). Most of the time save is from small optimizations throughout the run, but there are new strategies as well such as:
  • a new cleanup ice clip
  • utilizing more frozen enemies as platforms
  • powerbombs to drag X across the screen quickly
  • and more

nymx: Claiming for judging.
nymx: I had to take a few looks at this. I thought something was missed in previous judgments. Even though we currently have a publication, and the fact this new one is faster, I still compared it to the current WR...not an equal comparison at all. The "Message Prompts" were slower, due to the speedrun using the Japanese version. Game play itself was certainly faster though...with an impressive 7 minute IGT advantage. Well, congratulations on the further improvements of 7.5 seconds!

Thank you so much for this! I wonder if there is some way to make it less jerky? I mean sometimes the next screen comes up and my brain feels like it needs to catch up with the position of the player, and I feel like I miss part of the action just after the cut happens. Maybe it is because the character suddenly jumps from one side of the screen to the opposite side? So maybe the door transitions could be sped up by 200%-1000% instead of cutting them away? I enjoy watching it but the fast cuts hurt the eyeball after a while. TL;DR The cutsceneless metroidvania TAS is the best thing ever!

Actually this sounds better! I'll test it out later. Though, you may feel same way cause the instant skipping is a lot more frequent.

I know you’ve been doing these for a while, but I don’t think door transitions should be counted as “cutscenes” at all. I mean, this is Metroid, not Resident Evil. It takes around two or three seconds to shift the camera and load the next room. I don’t think anyone would complain that those “scenes” are still there. This isn’t meant to be the official video encode upload so it’s not a big deal, just noting it for the future. Anyway, a solid TAS! I’m glad that even the heavily scripted Fusion can keep getting shorter TAS times.

Watching the cutsceneless encode, I do agree that it is kinda jarring to see Samus jump from place to place with no break. It forces your eyes to rapidly dart between the left side and the right side of the screen, which can get unpleasant. That said, the screen transitions do add up to a lot of time during the run. Perhaps door transitions could be sped up by 2x instead, or the screen fade-in and fade-out could also be included, when they are currently skipped. I'm not sure how feasible any of those options are to implement, or if it makes the result more watchable in the end. I'm just thinking out loud :). Edit: I wrote all of that, and it's really just exactly what alexheights1 said. So yeah, I concur fully.
