California Games is a collection of six minigames. This run tries to show off what is possible in the game: I show all tricks, and also aim for high scores when it's not too repetitive. I also aim for fastest times in the non-timed events.

Half Pipe

There are only three tricks: kick turns, hand plants, and aerial turns. Kick turns are worth the least points, and also reduce your momentum, so they are not ideal for scoring.

Foot bag

Now more commonly known as hackey sack. I show off all tricks and a few other things. I never let the ball touch the ground, except to show of the trick "Nice Catch."

Surfing

I get the maximum score, 9.0, and never wipe out until time runs out. I had to do some "hacking" to figure out how the scoring actually works in this game, since all the game shows you is your final score at the end. Points are awarded mainly for being near the surf and doing jumps. Actually, the fastest way to get points is to go backwards, but it's not possible to do this very long before you wipe out.
(I leave the score screen up for half a second so you can see my score.)

Skating

This event is simply jumping to avoid obstacles. It's difficult because there is a significant delay between pressing the jump button and actually jumping. I throw in a few spins for extra points, but these slow you down so I didn't spin too often. Strangely, the course ends with a sand pit that you can't avoid tripping over.

BMX

This is my favorite event. I go through the course at max speed, and show off all the tricks. Front flips are the most difficult to do, and require some extra height. I also show a little glitch I discovered that allows you to fly for a bit.

Flying Disk

A.k.a. catch the frisbee. Probably the most boring event. I make a perfect throw and a catch for maximum points.

adelikat: This game doesn't seem to well suited for TASing. Despite showing off as much as possible about the game, there doesn't seem to be much going on. Most the run is timed and can't aim for time. The character is stuck doing a limited number of stunts over & over. All six events in this run were too repetitive and offered nothing new after about 10 seconds. Rejecting

adelikat: Accepting for publication to the Vault

Brandon: Publication underway. Note: At the time of encoding, the time was 08:05.05. When I replaced the FCM with the FM2, it decreased. I don't think this is worth re-encoding to display the new time.

Frisbee was most enjoyable event in this run because it didn't repeat same things after 10 seconds. Voting no.

half-pipe would've liked to seen all the tricks, and ended with a major whipe-out. the ending wasnt bad, i just wanted to see things exploited like Arc did in Track N Field. footbag used all the tricks, congrats. nothing much more to say about this one (and theres not much you can do here anyways). surfing HAHAHA! loved this if just because you surfed beneath the waves. and even ended with a shark attack!? bravo! skating what a craphole beach... cant people pick up after themselves? enjoyed the ending, but the stage dfelt too long; nothing you could do to help. BMX nice front flips. is there any place where you can jump from to perform 2 consecutive moves, or is that impossible? flying discus nifty. hated the event when i use to play the game though. all in all, id only vote no because of you not whiping out on the half pipe. but this showed a decent variety for such a game. YES.

Can anyone else believe we used to play this crap when we were kids? Anyway, I know just how hard this game was (especially with no instructions) and having to figure out everything. I really did enjoy a few of the 'bloopers' at the end of the stages. And I do wonder if you managed to manipulate the scoring to get some of the more questionable numbers in halfpipe. All in all, a very good beatdown of a dumb, tough game, voting yes.

Defedge: No, I can't :) This had to be one of the most boring (and stupidest) games ever made for the NES (not to mention hardest)... so to see it decimated like this was very pleasing. Voting yes, though I still believe (like many others) that you should've crashed in the skateboarding half-pipe event. It's funny to see him get clocked in the head =) Edit: "HTML is ON"... right, what a load of garbage.

Don't really know what to vote for this movie... Most people voting yes are voting yes since they played this game as a kid, and it appears to show some pretty hard stuff... I haven't played it when I was young, and I fully agree with Guybrush:

I'll refrain from voting for now. Edit: I voted no, for reasons above.

I played this game when I was a kid, think I only saw the end of the BMX thingy once or twice (pretty hard for me). The only thing I remember is that during one of the skateboarding times there was an earthquake or something spectacular. Voting yes because its interseting to see all the events beaten well.

Yes, I think they had several funny events built into that game. An UFO comes and captures one of the frisbee-players, if you wait too long. Or (haven't watched the video, so I don't know if he does it) you can hit a seagull with the hacky sack. The earthquake I have never witnessed, but that's a neat idea for the game, since California has these from time to time. EDIT: Okay, got to watch it. Of course the seagull was hit, who wouldn't have? :P It did indeed get a little dull at times, but not a lot more than other published movies have been. It was a pleasure to just see this thing getting ripped apart playing perfectly, too. I also liked the rollerskating part the most, since it was the hardest back when I played this pos on a C64. :D YES vote!

Indeed. I found this run boring. I think the events with a timer made it worse because I could see how long I would have to sit through it. There isn't near enough variety in this game to make an interesting run. Voting No.

I'd be more interested in a run that shows off as many glitches/easter eggs/bugs/etc as possible, but I"m happy to see this game nonetheless. Edit: sorry to beat a dead horse, didn't bother looking at post dates
