Hello, I have been looking at some of the videos on this site, and they are all very impressive and indicative of a lot of effort. I have a question, though; as you may know, some people have taken it upon themselves to edit certain ROM's--some with minor changes, some drastically--and in some cases, if skilled enough, to create entirely new games. Has the thought occured to allow timeattacks of these hacked games to be posted? I, for one, would like to see a video made for Legend of the Blob Bros. 2, a majorly transformed version of Super Mario Bros. 2., or Zelda Challenge: Outlands. These games, I think, would be a very good watch indeed. In any case, I leave this to your deliberation. But, it would be very impressive to see.[/url]

IMO a tool-assisted speedrun (can we finally use this term instead of "timeattack"?) of a modified ROM is ok only if the modifications do not make speedrunning easier compared to the original game. For example modifying a ROM so that you get immunity to enemy hits or that you can walk through walls (in such a way that is completely impossible in the original game) is absolutely not ok. However, a modified ROM which is basically a new game based on the original game, for example by changing the original game graphics and texts, should be ok.

you can watch the fmvs on roms that have nothing more than sprite hacks of the version the movie was made. :) the thought has occured, but for some reason bisqwit won't host hacked roms movies.

How curious...why is that? I would think that playing a competently hacked version of a game which requires different skills and techniques would be fun, because you can compare the strategies of the two. For example, genestio's SMB2 tool-assisted speedrun was very impressive, but he would have to learn new strategies for a tool-assisted speedrun of Blob Bros., because the levels are completely different. (I just chose that name because of his video. It could be anyone.)

The main reason is that hacked games are not as authentical as the official games. It doesn't feel as "right". I'm considering of allowing hacked games too, but it'd be somewhat hard to choose which games to allow and which not. The versions could also be confusing...

Maybe it's because hacked roms are illegal? I'm not sure, but I suppose modifying games this way is not legal, whereas currently people are *supposed* to use their own legal rom dumps. Well, I'm not a big fan of hacked roms anyway as their quality is usually not very good and you'd have to draw a line somewhere on what is and what isn't allowed.

I can see your point on the authenticity issue, if you're referring to the conquering of a game which many people have struggled over, and by not "feeling as right" you mean the hack which relatively few people have even seen or heard of. However, the main reason why these games are hacked, at least in my opinion, is because the original games have, through repeated playing, lost a bit of their lustre. That's not saying that they're any less fun, merely...repetitive. You come to know, generally, how the given world you're in works, and you know how to work it. A hacked game tends to...change things. You have the world that you know, at least in a broad sense, but, depending on the hack in question, everything else might be different. For example, in Blob Bros. (I know I'm being repetitive; it's a good example), the author of the game has edited everything; the characters, the levels, the general feel of the game. It feels like a completely new game, despite the same music, and the same physics. I was surprised to find how long the first level was, for instance. In my opinion, at least, if you do choose to include movies from hacked ROM's, then you should only consider the hacks that change the game enough that it can stand on it's own; new strategies, new formulas.

I would say that the game has to be pretty much completely different from the original to warrant a time attack. Something like "Super Mario Adventure", which is a hack of Super Mario 3, is pretty much a completely different game from the original Mario 3.

Or that Zelda 1 hack "Zelda Challenge: Outlands". Now there's a hack I'd like to see a run on. =)

If they are accepeted they better be a lot different. Changing the levels wont make the run more interesting. Michael's run of smb shows pretty much all the tricks in the game. A hack of the game is probably going to be the samething with different levels. Regardless of how the levels look, it will be just another smb run and we've already seen a perfect, or almost perfect one.

Also a problem with hacked roms is that not everyone would find a totally unfamiliar game being time attacked very interesting. I know that when I watched time attacks of games I loved, I was watching a movie I liked 10x more than some other game. It's just a matter of popularity of the hack, or how much people want to see it time attacked, I'd assume. So if hacked roms are eventually allowed, what if there was a forum/topic in which they can be voted on, for authenticity?
