adelikat: canceling due to improvements
  • 1) Primary goal: Aims for fastest completion time of each boxer
  • 2) Secondary goal: Aims for fastest real time when it doesn't conflict with 1)
  • Emulator: Snes(X v1.43+ v9)
  • Settings: WIP1 Timing, Allow left+right, Volume Env. Height Reading, Sync samples with sound CPU
  • Abuses programming errors in the game (the "pause" glitch)
  • Doesn't take damage (only because it is not advantagous)
  • Manipulates Luck
This run is a mere 74 frames faster than the published run in real time and only a 0.18 sec different in game clock improvements. This however is a pretty significant improvement considering a) how competed this game is b) how possible these times are unassisted (many of these tas times have been done on a console by many, including me) c) Phil did an amazing job with his TAS.
3 opponents were improved, but only Nick was improved by using a new strat. There were minor real time improvements as well such as using the pause glitch more optimally, using the proper super punch to get the quickest knockdown animation (where it did not conflict with the fastest game clock time), and NOT using the pause glitch on piston hurricane (the same time can be achieved without it).
Also, I "lost" 16 frames at the beginning because I clicked the "cleared the sram" button before recording which Phil seemed to have not done. Phil's "dirty sram" oddly resulted in the title screen appearing 16 frames sooner.
There is rumor/speculation/indirect proof that Nick Bruiser's time could be improved, including an 8.05 screenshot and an avi no one seems to have anymore. I found no way to recreate this and am submitting it as is. Should anyone "discover" the secret to this elusive time, I could easily redo the final fight and resubmit.
Here are the times that I achieved:
  • Gabby Jay - 06.26
  • Bear Hugger - 13.49
  • Piston Hurricane - 05.50
  • Bald Bull - 08.64
  • Bob Charlie - 05.50
  • Dragon Chan - 07.49
  • Masked Muscle - 06.33
  • Mr. Sandman - 13.13
  • Aran Ryan - 08.45
  • Heiki Kagero - 10.60
  • Mad Clown - 09.22 *
  • Super Macho Man - 09.43
  • Narcis Prince - 08.47 *
  • Hoy Quarlow - 8.35
  • Rick Bruiser - 10.71
  • Nick Bruiser - 08.28 *
The * are times that were improved from the current published run.
A quick explanation of the pause glitch: By stunning the opponent your super punch meter increases more but it takes time for it to increase, thereby delaying when you can super punch. Fortunately, when you pause the game, the meter continues to rise. So there are a few strategic places where pausing the game can significantly improve how quickly you can throw your first super punch.

Voting no. If these times can be matched anyway by a normal player, why even bother? It's good, but not good enough. Sorry.

Hoy Quarlow's laugh reminds me of that laugh from Kung-Fu... A few frames is a few frames. Good job.

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v205/SamuraiGoroh/Super%20Punch%20Out/?action=view&current=16_Nick_Bruiser.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch16 I've been trying for a couple hours, but can't seem to get anywhere near 8"05. I'm going to have to assume it's possible, but well beyond my abilities. Going to hold off on voting since I've got a feeling you'll be able to improve that last fight ;)

^ Hey, that's my snap :) I think I wrote the strat on one of my old notebooks, I could just seach for it, but Nick's time can sub 8 seconds... I'll let you know when I find it ASAP, Adelikat. I already told you on the PM's, but nice to see someone improving this game :D

Not a fan of punch-out games, but hey: if we have one, it's better to have a faster one, isn't it? Yes vote.

I wouldn't say a normal player. I am talking about top notch "speed runners". And this does not mean that the fights can be improved but rather a human can recreate the best possible fight.

Yes please :D Fortunately that screen shot shows all the types of punches thrown in the fight. It looks like you did the same number of each type of punch that Phil did. (of course it could be different combinations of left or right punches, gut or faces punches). Pehaps I am just missing something.

Ahh... I watched the other Super Punch-Out run yesterday! A Yes vote from me, not so different but it is faster than a good run and the game play on the first seemed to be almost perfect. EDIT: By the way, just in case, you could add what the * stands for...

Fixed, and I also added a brief explanation of the pause glitch.

I'm going to have to vote no on this submission. And by no I mean yes.

I give this a yes because an improvement is an improvement and should not matter to those who voted no but that is my opinion and is not reconcilable, not that it matters.

It's always funny when people vote no on a run that improves on the already published one. yes, of course.

I won't vote because I know Nick Bruiser can be beaten in around 7:5x. I remember Genisto testing this fight and managed to do that time. He thought he could even do better but for some reasons, probably because of SMB2 runs, he stopped working on this game. And for some unlucky reasons, he lost the movie file. :s Oh no, Samurai Goroh, the strat is different than your since I already saw your video, well the one on your site, which was ~ 8:08 or something like that. And Genisto's strat is not the same.

Amazing, so many people KNOW that it can be improved yet I can get any info on HOW. I will take a look at that fight some more when I get a chance maybe I can figure it out. I was hoping this submission might actually help get some actual info on this elusive strategy :\

I found a strategy that allows me to land the last 2 uppercuts but ends with a final time of 8.22 which is an improvement over this run but still far slower then what people are claiming. EDIT: I found a modification in the strategy has gotten it down to 8.16.
