Surprise! It's a new Rockman TAS time. This movie is 10.2667 seconds faster than the published movie. How did this happen? I won't spoil you. Watch the movie. You'll definitely know it when you see (and hear!) it. Hint: Wily2.

Attributes

  • Aims for fastest time
  • Abuses programming errors
  • Manipulates luck (for refills and for random involuntary movements)
  • Uses death as a shortcut
  • Utilizes a robot player (refills, Wily3 boss, Wily4 boss, death, seizures)
  • Utilizes frame counter, frame advance, RAM watch, subpixel positions etc.

You will never know when a TAS is "final". Especially not with this game. I don't honestly expect Rockman 1 ever to be completed in less than 10 minutes, but with these advances, you can never be 100% certain of the final limit.
Naturally, the page Rockman Tricks, which has the purpose of explaining every trick and glitch known in NES Rockman games, is becoming rather outdated. It does contain the foundation of Rockman glitching, but the applications surprise us, and are hard to describe.
The first six stages of this movie are identical to the previous movie. The first changed stage is Wily 1 (collected 1 refill less there).
In this submission, I list finalfighter as a co-author, because he is basically the architect of this submission. His contribution in this movie outweighs anyone else's, only equal to perhaps mine. The movie retains certain portions played by AngerFist (described in the previous submission), and I thank him for that.
Ps: I'm finally ready to state that this game has been broken.

FinalFighter's comments

This newly discovered technique is very interesting, especially in that it makes it possible to cross walls in various places.
Because it also causes the game sound to shift, people who are interested of glitches should definitely try it.
This technique was found two years ago, but because Megaman died when the technique was used, it was judged unusable by me, Bisqwit and Morimoto.
It was very fortunate that an insight struck me to try the technique once more before throwing it completely away, for it enabled yet another kind of Megaman 1 TAS to exist.
Many people ask me how to discover new techniques.
  • Continuously use slow playing speed.
  • Test known techniques, and remember them.
  • Love the software.
These things are vital in my opinion.
I am thankful to people who make the TAS-movies when I find new techniques, despite the tough work involved in it.
Thanks to Bisqwit for creating the computer program for optimizing this new idea. Your programming ability amazes me once again.
PS: Please enjoy this new TAS!

The last one broke my mind...this one will aswell and I don't even know why this is being put on the workbench - it should just go straight through. I am going to download a Rockman rom now. Edit: Voted yes - Only watched Wily1 onwards...I will have to watch it again with sound on later.

Also, an entirely no-glitch movie would somewhat be contradictory to the goals of this site.
Then how about prohibiting only zipping glitch?
That would work... together with pause+>damage trick prohibition, I guess? Or does someone not want to watch a three-minute long Wily1 boss fight? :)
I am started already on working on this. Even though, Bisqwit you have more experience than me with TASing megaman1, I hope you will improve my attempt by alot. I am using no glitches period. EDIT: also, great discovery in wily2. i loved it.
I personally think that the pause+damage trick ought to be allowed... since it really shortens boss fights which get tedious after a while (especially willy1). As long as the tricks could be performed easily enough on a console, I think it should be included; in other words, I would like a no-zip run rather than a no-glitch run. It would be like the standard no warp tag, since zipping is like warping through parts of the stage and avoiding enemies/bosses.

I hope this doesn't mean this run gets put in the too-totally-obliterated-beyond-recognition concept demo sections... EDIT: Hmmm, the flamewar from page 3 onwards isn't too constructive for this thread... maybe some moderator should delete/move it away. It's almost as though page 2 was the last page with useful discussions on the submission

It doesn't mean that.

1) I think people can vote how they damn well please as long as they watched the movie and it is their honest opinion, and 2) I'm accepting this submission.

I'm sorry, but, I am against using glitches when making this run. There wil be only 1 long/boring battle and that will be fighting the yellow devil in wily1. Other than that, I will have to perform some luck to create the fastest battles.

If you wish for my assistance in your run, I'd be happy to provide it. Particularly, I can probably give some insight in 1-2 frame subpixel optimizations :) Alternatively, you can make the run, and watch me beat it by 40 frames :P

Well, if you want to take my run after I am done and hex it you can. But, I am already started and quite far. I realize that I am not a Megaman1 TAS expert, but I know alot of tricks already from speedrunning which makes me work really fast. Also, I have been using MemoryWatch since FODA taught me how, so that has helped alot in gutsman and cutman.

Btw, someone said that a no-glitch run should only use techniques doable on a console. How about luck manipulation? That's certainly impossible in a console. OTOH, seeing all those contiguous big drops is cool. As for not using glitches at all, I think it may need to be specified and "standardized" what is considered a glitch and what isn't in this game. Else it may be difficult to judge whether the run is perfect or not.

I am 95% sure i know the rules of what is a glitch and what isn't.

Are you asking me to name out everything that is a glitch?

I guess Vatchern has already set out the premise of his run... ie nothing that abuses anything unintended by the programmers even if it is reproducable without TAS easily. So with that, I guess it's pretty clear what he is aiming for, and I will respect his decision for the run ;) Anyway, who can refuse another megaman run... for once we get to enjoy the full unabridged thing!

Not you specifically, but the community in general. It may well be that whether something is considered a glitch or not is a question of opinion, and it may be a good idea to set clear rules about it. It makes it clearer what the goals and limitations of the run are (for both the TAS creator and the viewers). It would also be interesting to read.

That would then mean that luck abuse cannot be used either? Of course this poses a rather difficult dilemma: What is considered luck abuse and what isn't?

Vatchern: <3 How far along are you? Re: Glitch definition: It'd be tough to agree on this completely as a community, or even for some individuals to come up with clear definitions. With Vatchern already started, I'd say it's best for him to continue according to whatever rules he set himself, instead of defining rules and saying anyone who TAS's Rockman w/o glitches must follow those rules.

Just starting Wily stages. But, Bisqwit has stated that no matter what i create he can make my movie 40 frames faster at least. I am doubting that my work up to this point has been perfect so I have sent Bisqwit a copy of my WIP. Deciding on what he has to say about my work will decide if I will start over or not. Since he knows ways to optimize sub-pixel things, I may end up starting over and working with Bisqwit instead. About the glitch definitions, I am 5% unsure about all of them. When I speedrun I usually go by TwinGalaxie rulings but one of them is questionable.

You know, in Chinese Wuxia movies, the kungfu master always retains like 1% of their knowledge that is not passed on to their disciples... maybe it's this 1% that allows Bisq a 40 frames advantage over you LOL

Although the Rockman TASes didn't peak my interest when I first started visiting the site, I'm hooked now. I think the most recent TASes of this game are essentially the site's premier videos because just when the viewer thinks the game cannot be taken any further, it is taken to yet another level. Excellent work!

wow, that actually took a while for publication for a Megaman game. Interesting. Now I have to get the AVI of this to replace the 15:48... The things that were mentioned in the 15:48, namely the point of the subtitle at the beginning telling viewers to skip ahead which I thought was unnescessary, as well as not using the patch to solidify the magna beams... was that changed?

Since you have to get the AVI anyway, and see the answer yourself, could you please cut the amount of redundancy in your posts? I should say, they are very redundant. Probably to the Warp's level of redundancy, with the only exception that Warp doesn't post as much as you do. Have I said you're often being redundant? Oh, it seems I have. Now I'm going to get myself a glass of cola… By the way, to answer your question, the subtitles don't say anything about skips, and the magnet beam was solidified. But as you had to get the AVI and see it yourself, my answer was automatically rendered redundant. Oh my, what a pity.

I didn't have the AVI at the moment, it'll take a while to get, and I was wondering *beforehand* if those changes were made. and I see that they have, so no worries.
