Slowking part of the problem with doing YI1 to get the goal sphere is that when you complete the level the game forces you to walk up the mountain to the yellow switch palace, and you have to walk back. This would imply two map transitions, and it's quite the trek up that hill. Many frames which eat up the time it seems you should save by skipping the cutscene. I think there may be a solution, though. If you cornerclip the pipe so you get crushed and die. This keeps you from doing the crazy trek up the mountain, with the tradeoff that you can't do the yoshi wings trick in yi3. I don't know how much time the wings trick saves, or how much time the goal sphere route was behind, so this may or may not actually be a solution Where the fireball is I think is a potential death spot. Eye of the Beholder: Getting a goal sphere requires clapping chuck. YI2 only has two chargin chucks, which grant a naked koopa in the reserve box. Here is clapping chuck, he grants a goal sphere: Here is chargin chuck, he grants a naked koopa:

jimsfriend is indeed correct. I did find this way to save time in any% maybe yesterday or so, which caused us to restart the any%. We wished to keep the project secret but now this has been found, there's not much point :p Here is my (very bad) testrun: smv, although most of yi1 is Masterjun. IIRC it saves about 800 frames over the current attempt. It's just a shame this was found right after we finished our work. -_-

Nice. I guess with some optimisation you can save even more?

Well that happens all the time with longer TASes. There were already known improvements to the MM TAS when it was submitted. That's just how it goes...

I don't really know this glitch so here is a dumb question: Could you substitute the fireballs from the fireflower for the fireballs a red shell produces? If so that seems like it would be faster than getting the fire flower.

NICE IDEA! then we dont even need to 6/5 the level (maybe yes for the cornerclip?) edit: ok, we have to 6/5 because we dont get the red shell with 49 hopping edit2: ok we have to get the fireflower because in normal mario, the game will crash <.<
Warning: Might glitch to credits I will finish this ACE soon as possible (or will I?)

That looks awesome! I suppose you could ask the judges to replace the submission file before it's actually published, but you might not be done with the improvement before that happens.

When I saw this glitch I was like "Wow". So I tried a little bit myself to see how much time can be save from the any% run, and the potential seems huge. So I've allowed myself to hex-edit the Yoshi Island 1 I tested between your levels, hope you guys don't mind. Obviously I didn't care about lag, score, or whatever and it's not optimized, it was just for testing purpose. The amount of frames that can be shaved seems huge. This is really a shame that it's been discovered after your publication : / Here's my test if anyone is interested : http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1269022565/test.smv

That's nice! Lil_Gecko's test is 994 frames faster the run that just got accepted, and if it's not optimized, then this glitch can save more than 1000 frames.

ok, ive optimized that (maybe not perfect but i think its better than some test runs) smv: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/62579576/smw%20YI1%20optimized.smv we should look if theres another strategy to do that... maybe we can save more frames...

I count only 53 frames better. Total of 1047 better than accepted run.

Great job on the testrun! I think the flower collection from the flying question block can be optimized much more. But dying on the cement block is a much better idea. I look forward to seeing what Mister will come up with. We will begin our run soon.

I'm wondering how long this will take you - should I set the current movie to delayed? Or if it will take some time now, it can just run its normal course of obsoletion.

I'm just me, but I think that a 1000 frame improvement warrants a totally new submission.

That's hardly deniable. I think the question is more about what to do with the current one: either delay it until a new one is made (to be on the safe side), then cancel, or publish it right away and have it obsoleted in a few days/weeks.

For some reason I anticipate future issues, so I'm in favor of publishing the current submission and letting it get obsoleted.

Publish it right away.
  • We aren't going to run out of publication numbers.
  • The current submission is good enough for publication on its own.
  • By publishing now the obsoletion history will be more complete.
  • We have been burned on waiting for the improved version before.
  • Most of the work for publication has already been done, I think.

Did you test SlowKing's red shell fireball idea? Also, I agree that it should be published; amaurea brought up some good points.

If I've understand the glitch correctly you need to be Fire Mario to glitch a goal sphere no ? Also, is it possible to do the diying corner-clip with Yoshi or only Big Mario can do it ?

The only thing holding it up is my set of encodes for the run.

So, I played around with naked-koopa - it appears to be an instant level end. Out of curiosity, #1: Does it require blue yoshi? #2: Is YI-1 the only place it can be obtained? #3: What happens if it is used at bowsers castle?

The naked-koopa isn't an instant level end - the goal sphere is an instant level end. If we do the bug on a chargin' chuck, we get a naked green koopa. If we do it on clappin' chuck, we get a goal sphere. 1) Any Yoshi will do. 2) No. Any level with Clappin' Chuck is fine. 3) Nothing, really. No exit is triggered, and the endings won't be neither.

you have to keep in mind that if you get the flower too early, yoshi will just swallow it without giving it to mario Link to video
