Emulator sync settings:

  • Use wip1 timing

Movie goals:

  • Aim for fastest real time
  • Use no saves
  • Manipulate luck
  • Take damage to save time

About this movie:

This movie is 20,354 frames faster than the currently published any% run, or a little more than 5 and a half minutes. The in-game timer is 2 minutes faster, but that was not a primary goal of mine. The majority of this gain came from a few different factors. The new route alone helped to shave off a few minutes. The arm pumping saved at least a minute or so. Overall better playing and optimization probably saved another minute. I also made great effort to avoid the pause menu and collecting unnecessary items. Not so surprisingly this run follows a similar route as the 14% run, but with the addition of 4 extra items which saved a ton of time by comparison.
Most Super Metroid runs aim for the lowest in-game timer, while this run instead aims for the lowest real time. Due to the fact that I am favoring real time, I have made some unorthodox route choices. These choices keep the flow of the game moving and reduce the amount of items and door transitions down to the near minimum.
Making this run became exponentially easier as I moved along. My knowledge of the game has increased vastly and my playing ability has increased as well. I had a lot of fun making the route and seeing how much faster I could be than the current run. Needless to say I am happy with the results. The run could not have been possible without the help of many people. So I will list the people who helped me in any way during the making of this run.

Huge thanks to the following people (In alphabetical order):

Bisqwit – For nesvideos and the nesvideos forum, without which this run would not exist.
DeHacked – For his micro-storage system which hosted my movie files.
Evilchen – Supplied with a short wip of a run he was working on, and gave support during the making of this movie.
Gocha – For the awesome Snes9x memory watch tool.
JXQ – For his 100% run which set the standard for this game way higher than I thought imaginable. His run was the only run I had to compare times to, and this lead to an overall higher quality of my run. He was also kind enough to give advice and answer all my dumb questions.
Michael Flatley – The man who invented the arm pump! This single trick of his saves countless seconds in any Super Metroid Run. He is also responsible for the Phantoon 1 round kill, which I implemented in my run as a 2 round kill.
moozooh – Another great Super Metroid TASer. He helped motivate me to start my run. He also supplied me with gocha’s Snes9x memory watch tool and his own ini file that contained all the useful memory addresses in Super Metroid. He gave me much support throughout the run and answered many of my questions as well.
nitsuja – The great coder responsible for the Snes9x improvements.
OgreSlayer – Supplied a useful trick, and gave general support throughout the project.
saturn – He has invented countless tricks for this game. In my run I implement his super short charge technique on many occasions, and I also use his amazing Draygon battle strategy. He has given me much support along the way too and answered the many questions that I had during the making of this run.
terimakasih – He set the standard for Super Metroid TASes. Without his movies, I do not think I would have been as interested in doing this run. I used many of the tricks from his 14% run in this run.
And thanks to all the people on the forum that gave support to me during the making of this run.

DeHackEd: Wow. People seem to like it, and anything that empties the stack is a good thing for me.

I had my second controller turned on, works fine now... I'm just a tad bit slow in the head sometimes. EDIT: God I love sequence breaks. I don't know much about Metroid other than having played it through a couple times, but I found all the old and new tricks spellbinding, and the little amount of waiting time experienced was entertaining too. Definite yes.

Absolutely the most beautiful run I have seen while (or ever). There was so much new in this run, that it was like a new game =) Absolutely yes for this run. This run just can't be ejected

In fact I did not forget about this trick but made a conscious decision not to use it. I talked with JXQ and when I found out how much time it saved, it was far less than the amount of time it would take for me to collect 2 super missles somewhere else. The super missle stock always needs to be high in my run, no matter what. I need to have 6 supers for the guardian pirates right before ridley, and there are 8 doors in norfair that require a super missle each.
I triple-checked and you maxed out your missiles on little kraid before you even left Brinstar. That still leaves one refill point on your way (the wall crawling enemy who you refilled off of on the way there.) Out of curiosity how much time does it save?

I believe JXQ said 30-40 frames can be saved.

I'm a fan of the metroid series and you definintely didn't disappoint me. No moments that really stood out for me but definitely not boring. OK I did like when you opened the first missile door with that rain of 5 missiles.

Excellence. Anything didn't strike me as boring and I found it rather entertaining as a whole.

Lol. I was all like : "OH I NOTICED A MISTAKE YOU HAVEN'T BEEN THE FASTEST AT BOTWOON'S SINCE IT SHOULD HAVE STILL BEEN ALIVE... oh damn." It's an insane movie, it kind of brought me back memories for the hundredth time ;) Voting yes, asking for star.

This is a no brainer... definitely a star! I'm not huge into Super Metroid, but this definitely kept my attention the whole way... and the whole escaping Baby Metroid off the hope was just brilliant! I only wish there was a way to be able to fire a shot off while you're charge flying... ah well... ^^;; Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

I liked how you put yourself into morphball so that you didn't touch ground. Did you gain vertical speed at some points, by doing this trick? Maybe it was an optical illusion... :P I don't remember seeing much of this in the other movies, maybe i didn't look close enough? Also: Passing through those sort of "brains that lays baby hopping brains" when you hit it was a nice touch :P Can you beleive there is a "no" vote, i dont get it, how can you vote no on this? ........ I just dont get it..

I unfortunately do not gain vertical speed doing this. Like you said it actually slows Samus' descent so that some platforms can be passed over without having her landing on it and coming to a complete stop. It is a cool trick. Thanks for being so supportive of the run. I too do not really like seeing that no vote there, but everyone is entitled to their opinion I suppose. Xkeeper said that the run has too much "run to next door, fire, enter door", even though ever other Metroid game is just like that.

Awesome run, even if it's somewhat improvable according to metroid2002! I think the 100% should keep its star though.

It halves the damage taken from Mother Brain's beam attack.

Both suits must be acquired in order to survive the Mother Brain's unavoidable energy attack that results in Samus losing all but 1 unit of health. Edit: moozooh beat me to it. And a big thanks to Saturn for encoding this. Thanks a lot man!

You're welcome! Thank you too Bisqwit, for giving me a chance to do it. I'm really glad I could contribute something to this site.

It seems like we're obligated to give this a star considering how much its improved over the last video or so (which was given a star).

That would also mean removing a star from the 100% run, which uses a more conventional route, isn't much (not even twice as) longer and has more interesting moments to showcase. Although this is rather moot since JXQ is working on an improvement, so it might as well be better to give a star to any% as it's considerably more up-to-date.

Now that I've watched it: Woah! That had some completely unbelievable moments. There was one boss that was defeated or something, and then Samus managed to stand still while still blinking blue (going superspeed). Then it was just like godmode was enabled and she literally floated up to the door. That part was insane, reminded me of the memory glitch in the latest megaman.

I liked it better than the 100% one. I say we star this one for now replacing the 100%. Then star the 100% one and replace this one when the next 100% comes out.

Oh yeah. Is that what they call the "bluesuit" glitch?
