This is my second run on this site, which I've been working for a little bit over a month. It is obviously much longer than my last movie (4 min). I will honestly say that I had never played this game before I decided to run it, though I had played other Kirby games which I liked. As the game was on the "List of ideas", I gave it a shot and I think it turned out nicely in the end.

Game Info

In the game there are 6 different abilities to copy. The game consists of 7 worlds, the first three containing 3 stages. The ones coming after that increment the number of stages by one for each world. After all the stages in a world are complete, there will be a boss fight to proceed to the next world. After you’ve beaten the boss you can at any time to go back to the boss room to play a bonus game. If you fail them you have to restart the game to redo. Also throughout the game there are 7 hidden Rainbow Pieces. There is one in each world, and are mostly not hidden very well. Though the Rainbow Pieces are protected by a barrier, and the barrier can only be broken with a special power, which differs from piece to piece.
General information:
  • It is possible to control Kirby ~10 frames before the screen goes normal after entering a door.
  • Pressing A every second frame makes the owl go faster than normal flying, however he is harder to control.
  • Jumping is a few frames slower than walking with Kirby, so I try to stay in the air as short time as possible when I’m just Kirby. The exception to this is up slopes, where jumping is faster.
  • Using abilities is always slower than flying, the best being lightning only being 2 frames slower.
  • Falling with the stone is faster than flying downwards or falling downwards.
  • Rick the hamster sucks.
  • Sometimes running into a wall with the fire ability is faster than jumping/flying upwards.
  • A boss or miniboss cannot take more than two hits simultaneously, which leads to some different solutions.
  • What is counted to 100%:
    • Completing stages and beating bosses.
    • Collecting the rainbow pieces.
    • Boss bonus stages.
    • Acquiring the Girl Chu. After each miniboss pre-world 7, you get an animal friend out of the sack. If you already own a friend when that happens, a Chu pops out. Either it’s black and gives some health back, or it’s the girl Chu.

A few notes about the run...

...as going level specific would make no sense. Listed in order of appearance:
  • At the end of 2-3, it seems like I kill an enemy too much. This is however to manipulate the upcoming boss, which refused to be manipulated to the right place in any other way. This costs me ~18 frames.
  • Around frame 35000, there indeed is a door there, it just isn’t seen if you don’t have the light bulb power.
  • Fifth boss: After the moon is defeated, it seems as though I hit the sun with an attack, but it doesn't do any damage. In fact it does, as the sun DOES NOT share HP with the moon. It replenishes all its HP when the moon dies. Then we have that cleared out.
  • I take damage around frame 106200. I couldn't find any other way to break the blocks without taking damage, so it is unavoidable.
  • Levels 7-4 to 7-6 are simply copies of the previous three, running backwards and being harder.
  • Right at the start of the fight against King Dedede, he sleeps and then starts to sleep again. Both of these are unavoidable. Or rather, the alternatives were slower. Also letting him suck me in was faster than waiting for him to finish the attack.

Thanks to:

Tompa: As usual, you're reviewing my WIPs to see that there are no mistakes or missed shortcuts. You supported me through it all.
zefiris: Also reviewing my WIPs extensively and giving me feedback and support.
FrostyTheDragon: For providing me with very useful information about the game in its early phases.

Enjoy the run.

adelikat: Nice viewer response. I am accepting this movie. Also Maza is in the process of encoding it, so I am setting to publication underway.

Congrats on your second TAS!! You did a very good job with this, I wouldn't even think about TASing a game I had never played before... Are we going to see an improvement of the LA TAS now? Yes vote. (Was going to vote no because you didn't do a spinattack with Kirby in the end, it sucks...)

You forgot to prejump at few places (I can remember two places), but anyways it's an easy yes vote~ Especially knowing how much time you spent on recording and starting over again and again :D

I have been passively following this run, and the finished product still amazed me. A massive yes from this voter!

You planned the route clear-sighted, played it excellently and showed most abilities (except for poor little Rick :D), especially my favourite one: fire-kirby! I loved playing this game years ago - a time a could think back to watching this movie. So thanks Soulrivers, and YES vote. PS: The only thing I wonder is, if it would have saved time to take damage to get past the spike enemies in 5-4. EDIT: Never mind, I thought about level 6 -5, but soulrivers reminded me of the fact, that receiving damage causes Kirby to lose his ability. So I can't spot any flaws. Good work.

Thanks. :) Glad to entertain. On your note, I did a damage boost at that spot already. D: What's your point?

Eh, it was kind of dragging by the end. The turbo-A thorughout the run that resulted in an entire channel of music being cut out didn't help matters, nor did the fact that the hawk's theme was played thoughout a large part of the run. Meh.

So you aren't complaining about the playing really, just that it was a bad game choice?

I thought it was pretty good. I'm gonna vote yes, but I think it could be a little better. I don't know how far some of those enemy manipulations can go and some of those movements so I can't really fault you too much. Just think with some playing around those could go smoother. Still worth the yes though, and you chose a very entertaining game to watch.

I loved this game as a kid, and I love this run, though I felt that for a 100%, you should've gone all the way with at least one of the end stage bonus jumps, thats just me though, definate yes vote either way

Indeed, I am aware that some parts could have been better. If I ever do another run of this game (which I don't think I will ;D), those points will be taken into account. This game is VERY un-hex-edit-friendly, which explains some mistakes I make that easily could've been fixed. To be honest, I only succeeded one hex-edit with a single desync throughout the run.

Heh, well the goal was to make the game show 100% on the file when the game was completed, which the run fulfilled.

No, it is partially your fault. Turbo-Aing to the point that an entire channel of music is gone, as well as using a character that changes the theme to one song for 50% of the game, greatly reduces my enjoyment of the run. Sorry.

Actually turboing A with the owl doesn't remove any sound - it makes no sound in the first place. This is however true for the fish, which isn't even used that much. I also cannot understand how it is my fault for picking the fastest way of travel?

He meant that you will hear the Owl music all the time instead of the lvl music...

Fast ≠ entertaining not entertaining ≠ enjoyable to watch Therefore I voted no. And in any case, it still removes music and it makes the game play the same song too damn much.

One of the key things I look for in a TAS is tricks that a human player with a turbo controller and equal game knowledge probably couldn't duplicate with any consistency. I skimmed over the first four worlds - I'd seen the first three in a WIP and the fourth didn't seem to have much to really follow. The fifth is where I saw my first TAS-specific trick. I had originally told Soulrivers that I didn't think getting the fifth Rainbow Drop without Rick was possible. Not only did he pull that off in this run, he tells me it's possible to do that without frame advance. Considering the level of precision required, I don't think a human player could consistently pull that one off. Another thing that impressed me was how long he was able to hold on to Coo. I suspect his usage of Coo is at least 30% more than a human player could expect under fairly good circumstances. Overall, I voted yes.

Ok, first of all, does any of you know the names of Kirby's animal pals? I sure do. I've played Kirby since 2006 and got familiar with it very quickly. Rick is the Hamster, Coo is the Owl, and Kine is the Fish.

And your point is? :/ It says all the names if you keep the SGB border on when viewing the movie.

Watched it. Liked it. Yes on publication. And for what it's worth the "black blob" is Gooey, and the "girl blob" (if it's the one with the bow that I'm thinking of) is Chu. Both are in Kirby's Dream Land 3.
