This is an improvement of 1444 frames or 24.07 seconds to Genisto's infamous "princess only" run of Super Mario Bros 2 (U)(PRG0). Thanks to all SMB2 TASers which includes but is not limited to: Sleepz/Genisto/DonamerDragon/Phil/Bisqwit/Diman, L-Spiro for his memory watcher, and adelikat and DeHackEd for their support. Uses FCEU 0.98.15
Goals
Abuses programming errors
Takes damage to save time
Uses a suboptimal character
Bisqwit: Replacing the movie file with one that has rerecord count as 0, in order to not cause artifacts at Movie Statistics, among possible other reasons.
adelikat: And accepting for publication as an improvement to the published movie.
NesVideoAgent: Hi! I am a robot. I took a few screenshots
of this movie and placed them here.
Oh! I also replaced the ROM name.

I updated it to Super Mario Bros. 2 (U) (PRG0) [!].nes
One major flaw in this run is taking an enemy at end of 1-2.
I guess, well I hope, laughing gas thinks it was necessary for the glitch to be accomplished but it's not. Taking an enemy is useful for Toad only.
Also, climbing the vines don't look optimized especially at start of 4-2.
There is a frame rule in that game but only for birdo when he is throwing his eggs and some other things such as rocket. Otherwise, no frame rules. Also, at 1-2, eggs aren't needed to kill it.
Yeah, I thought picking up the enemy was necessary because I assumed (wrongly) in donamerdragon's run that it would be faster for toad to just run out the remaining distance instead of taking time to pick up the enemy. I don't have the time or energy to redo 80% of the run so if this is rejected based on that I won't really mind. Although I would like to see a "toad only" run obsolete the "princess only" run since toad, like white men, can't jump and thus could give rise to more entertaining methods.
I thought this was a nice effort and was entertained throughout. And it's way overdue for Genisto's run to be replaced. Voting yes.
The FCM does not release "up" at the end of the movie, so it never technically ends. (In my experience, this is usually only caused by inaccurate hex-editing.)
<Swordless> Go hug a tree, you vegetarian (I bet you really are one)
Here is a replacement FCM which,
1) Ends correctly
2) Still has 0 rerecords
3) Removes the wholly redundant savestate from the FCM, reducing the file size dramatically, keeping sync, and increasing the integrity of the movie file.
I'm going to write a program soon that will auto-strip these savestates from FCM files.

I'm not sure what to think... In a way I guess it's better that a better non-famtasia run is in the old run's place, but I'm not exactly in favor of having this run in the first place (like everyone probably knows by now). But I guess that's not going to happen.
Wasn't this movie once labled as "never going to be obsoleted"?...
I insist on knowing why the rule was changed. As it was said that it is needless to have a princess run on the site, but also needless to remove the previous movie.
Don't see why there was an exception.
Why are some people so obsessed in "we don't need this run", "bisqwit once said this run could be obsoleted", "someone said this run would never be obsoleted", blaa blaa.
Who cares? It's entertaining. Does it hurt to have such a video here? Why are some people so opposed to this?
>It's entertaining.
That's not objectively true. I don't see it as as entertaining as the published short movie, and not different enough to warrant a separate publication.
>Does it hurt to have such a video here?
It leads to tricky arguments of type "if SMB2 Princess only why not my movie with silly rule X?".
>I see it as the equivalent of the Luigi run for SMB2J. Why is this different?
That's a better argument.
The main difference in my opinion is that you can not select character every level in SMB2j. If you could, I would be opposed to "Mario only" or "Luigi only" runs for that game, I would prefer a movie w
Do you think we should have Toad, Mario and Luigi only runs as well for this game?

I still fail to see why having such discussions hurts. There's going to be a drama bomb whenever someone's run is rejected and they disagree why. I'd personally rather stop constricting a noose on what's "OK" and what's "Harmful to the site" because that makes this site less fun.
This is why "Select your goals well" is in the Guidelines and not the Rules.

>Wow, nice argument. I wonder how did you determine the objective truth.
I used a stopwatch, of course.
You don't HAVE to be sarcastic every time you reply to something you don't agree with.
Warp thinks it's entertaining, I don't. I was mostly reacting to the way he made it sound like "Everybody thinks this is entertaining, nobody should have anything against it being on the site". (I also think that you understood this yourself without me spelling it out for you.)
OmnipotentEntity and moozooh: Do you think we should publishing Toad, Mario and Luigi only runs for this game? Honestly?
My thoughts on why a princess-only run was published way back when is because she was the only character that didn't get any screen time at all in the old runs of SMB2.
Now Mario doesn't either. However, Mario is an average character who plays normally. Mario isn't a very good choice. A princess run is good because she's terrible at everything but has an interesting quirk.
So, in this case it's probably a bad idea for a Mario run, a Toad run and a Luigi run is pointless because they already have screen time. Thanks for strawmanning me though. It's appriciated.

But I DO.
Whether you agree on the subjective matters or not, doesn't make them less subjective. Warp was entertained by this run, you weren't. Does that make you more right? No, sir. He said it was entertaining — well guess what, for him it was. Nothing is objectively entertaining, anyway.

I haven't seen them. I don't know the game too well. Maybe they do have merit; maybe they don't. I don't know. However, Omni's point is really reasonable, so I'll side with him on this matter.
That is my honest answer.
But to expand it from this game alone to all games in general, I generally believe that prohibiting a potential run of technically valid category from being published from the start is a bad choice by itself. It kills variety in goal choice, it confines you to seeing same shit over and over, being improved by tiny amounts of time and most of the time killing variety and entertainment in each iteration, instead of doing something different. It hurts the site in the long run because instead of welcoming new content and letting people work on it and inspire improvements, the old content is refurbished or abandoned as not worth improving. At most, you're getting a run of a crappy generic game (see: a half of NES platformers) instead of an a priori more interesting run of a game that has its category slots already full. That is what I think really hurts the site. That I don't want, and don't expect many people to want unless they just don't understand what it actually means.
I do understand that argument regarding more runs of the same game vs. variety is two-sided, but if a game has TASing merits, they should be presented adequately, giving the authors freedom in what they want to show of this game. As such, fixation on "no matter what, we need less movies for each game, hurr" is definitely counterproductive.

I think it would be a pretty good idea to make an all Mario run through this game, the main reason is that he is Mario (and he's not used). I'd have to say he is the worst character of the 4.
Luigi - has a very long and high jump
Toad - when carrying items he's super fast
Princess - Has about the same length jump as Luigi, making her able to make the same gaps as Luigi.
Mario - not a long jump, pretty high jump, decent item grabbing time, nothing special.
You probably couldn't get a fast time through 6-2 using Mario though, but it'd be interesting to see if you could.
